Rural Lifestyle Radio - December 30, 2007

At 8:00 this morning we set sail with yet another great show about the Rural Lifestyle.  Highway 6 - Your Road to the Country is not a farm show...but a show about folks living on small farms and acreages.  The events that impact their lives along with news and information about what makes living the lifestyle so great.

So...let's get to what we talked about this morning.

The Iowa Caucus are just around the corner.  In a couple of days neighbors will be gathering in schools, churches, social halls and homes to select whom they believe should be the next President of the United States.

Some time ago we suggested that Western Iowa may well select that president.  And the Iowa Independent seems to agree with us.  We mentioned early on in the campaign how John Edwards and Bill Richardson were working the rural areas of the state.  About how Bill Richardson had made it a point to visit all 99 counties in Iowa and about how important we thought that would be as we come down to the wire. 

We also spent a little time this morning talking about how lucky we are to be living in Iowa at this time.  No matter how many "Push Polls" we seem to get.  Here we get to actually sit down, often over coffee, and visit with the candidates, look them in the eye and ask the tough questions.  While some in Iowa moan about the phone calls and the packed mailboxes Rural Iowa should be using this to our best advantage.  Nowhere on the planet do people have this opportunity to mingle and actually talk issues with the men and women who are running for the most powerful position in the world.  It's all over on Thursday night...and, for some of us, we'll miss the gift of conversation with these brilliant people who have crossed our paths.

How about the Communication Workers of America.  If you were on hand this morning you learned all about their effort called "Speed Matters".   We visited at length with Steve Abbott about how important it is that we start to treat Rural America and the Internet the same way as we did 65+ years ago with Rural Electrification.  Getting high speed Internet to Rural America is of critical importance for so many reasons.

Congratulations to Tama County, Iowa who is growing in the number of people between the ages of 15 to 49.  In fact, it is the only rural county in the state to see those numbers increase.  Why?  Affordable housing, a low cost of living, good schools, and a sense of safety.  Well done Tama!  This is great news for Gladbrook, Tama, Toledo, Garwin and Dysart.

While most of the focus these days seems to be on large and mega-large farming operations there is much to be said about the small farm or acreage and the whole thing about local economies and food safety.  We share those stories with you all the time...and thought you might like this quote from the Minneapolis Star-Tribune.  Mary Jo Forbord is the principal of Prairie Horizons Farm in Western Minnesota.  She says it pretty well.

Dan Duffy is the CEO of United Country Real Estate.  He was recently asked his opinion as to why it seems Rural America, unlike Urban America, has dodged the bullet when it comes to home foreclosures.  He also talks about why he thinks more and more people are heading to the country to live.  He makes several good points and so does this article.

The Food vs. Fuel debate is back in the news.  This time we are told by a new Informa Study that there is no relationship between skyrocketing food prices and the 100% to 200% increase in corn and soybean prices as we create more and more renewable energy alternatives from grain.  Of course the study was funded by the Renewable Fuels Foundation.  It's a good read from our friends at Brownfield.

So are we living too clean?  Can you be more healthy living on the farm?There is an increase in food allergies and other childhood illnesses and some folks think there might be a link between living "too clean" and the up-tick in numbers.  Then the question is..."Does this explain why rural kids tend to be healthier than urban kids?"  We've talked about this before and now somebody seems to think we're right. Our in-studio guests this morning were two members of the Des Moines Police Department Mounted Patrol.  Sgt. Robin Sprafka and Sgt. Rick Hildreth told us about their passion to promote the Mounted Unit while at the same time giving kids and adults the thrill of seeing horses in an urban setting while still serving and protecting.  A great interview and we're grateful they came up from their Middle River Ranch for the visit.  Good stuff!  If you would like to send Sgt. Welcome to the nations only live radio show dedicated to folks living on small farms or acreages.  This is Highway 6 - Your Road to the Country. Nope, we're not a farm show...we are a show about the rural lifestyle.  And, each Sunday morning  at 8 on 98.3 WOW-FM we bring you news and information dedicated to country living.

We also discussed small business and rural companies.  The focus was the one year birthday of the Iowa Farm Bureau Federation program called Renew Rural Iowa.  A good story about how over 22 million dollars is being funneled into assisting rural businesses in their efforts to boost employment.

And...they have their work cut out for them.  You see, Iowa isn't as good to small business as is South Dakota.  We gave you the top ten states that the Small Business and Entrepreneurship Council says are great for business...and we also gave you the bottom of the list.

And, we once again visited the rural broadband Internet issue.  Seems the Federal Government just doesn't know how many people are NOT on broadband.  We also gave a little information about the Communications Workers of America and their suggestion on how to "hook up" Rural America".  Sadly, Iowa is again near the bottom in connection speeds.

And our Tip of the Week was about cleaning your tack.  If you've got to ask what "tack" is...well.

Welcome to Highway 6 - Your Road to the Country...the nations only full hour, live radio show dedicated to issues involving rural affairs and the folks living on small farms or acreages.

We're on each Sunday morning at 8 on 98.3 WOW-FM or you can listen using your PC by just signing on.  Go ahead, give it a try.

Our special guest for this morning was Mark True (L) of REL Productions here in Des Moines.  Mark gives some solid advice about how rural areas, cities and regions can better brand who they are and attract the people and industry they need.  He's gave us some insights on several of his projects and about what he feels can benefit not only Rural Iowa...but also Rural America.  Good stuff.

We scored a couple of interesting stories about schools and kids. 

We told you about how many parents are taking a solid look at "Virtual Schools".  It's home schooling with a twist toward technology.  Not only is it working in some parts of the country...the idea is growing and gaining the support of rural governments.  Our story came to us from the Star-Tribune in Wyoming and could easly be discussed in rural areas here in Iowa.

Low income kids, they tell us, perform at lower levels in school.  The common wisdom is that kids who come from poor areas and receive free and reduced meals...and are RURAL all perform worse than other more privlidged children.  We shared with you a story about a very rural Alabama school, Fruithurst Elementary, and their principal Christie Hiett and how every one of these kids are doing very well.  Everything hinges on the committment of parents and teachers. it was sent to us by our friends at The Daily Yonder.  Good reading...

We've been at this for years...telling folks about the growth in Rural America.  No...not production agriculture growth...but the growth in rural areas and how people are flocking to live in the country on their small farm or acreage.  Well, now we learn the Federal Government and the census data agrees. Not only is this information important to folks like us who champion the rural lifestyle this is important information for folks wanting to market to this growing population.
