Michael Hutchison - Iowa Parrot Rescue

Highway 6 - Your Road to the Country is the nation's only live full hour talk show about living the rural lifestyle.  Sure, we talk about agriculture but we're no "Farm Show".  This is about living on an acreage or small farm, raising things from produce to horses.  Using your plot of land to increase your income or take on an interesting hobby.

This Sunday we're going to visit with Michael Hutchison.  Michael and his wife Abi operate Iowa Parrot Rescue on their acreage near Letts, Iowa.  Since being on our show last year Iowa Parrot Rescue has been awarded a large grant to expand their efforts and their facility.

So, what's this got to do with small farms and acreages?   Michael Hutchison is now conducting seminars for folks interested in learning more about parrot rescues.  In fact, this weekend his facility is home to 6 families who are learning about his rescue methods and what it takes to get involved.  His goal is to set up dozens of bird rescue operations all across Iowa.  "It's a desperate situation", says Hutchison.  "We're contacted daily by people who can no longer care for or want their parrot.  Last year we took in well over 100 birds.  Some as far away as 300 miles."

It should be an interesting discussion and perhaps something new for your small farm or acreage?

By the way, the photos are of our Timnah African Gray.  His name is Kunta Kinte, he is nearly three and, like any three year old child, needs lots of attention and care.  That's one of the issues Hutchison will address and why he thinks so many people who purchase a parrot decide in just a few months that it is just too much for them.
