So, what in the heck are we talking about today?

It's a good time to live in Rural America considering all the benefits we can get.  We ticked off the top four reasons to pull up your urban stakes and head to the country.  Good stuff.

Rural population is shifting on a rapid basis.  In fact, a quarter of the people living in Rural America make their homes in counties where the majority population is made up of racial/ethnic minorities.  It's a great study, we had the story and here are the details.

The Urbandale Hy-Vee is asking the Urbandale Planning and Zoning Commission to kick out several private business at their 86th and Hickman store so they can increase the size by 19,000 square feet.  It's a bad plan and we think the Planning and Zoning Commission should nip this one in the bud when they meet on Monday.  If you want to add your voice you can contact them right here and make contact with,

China and Food and Products...it's just bad business.  Today we gave you several reasons to "just say no" to the junk made in China.  And...why!

So, is there a mushroom shortage?  Must be...learn about how some brands of canned mushrooms increased their price by over 67% in just two weeks.  What is going on?  Nobody is talking.

And to add to our food conversation...we've got as our special guest Sean Skeehan from Farm Crawl 2008.  Sean is in studio to tell us about this great adventure in introducing folks to sustainable agriculture, organics and the benefits of buying directly from the farm...vs. the grocery store.

Rural Lifestyle - Farm Crawl - Sunday Morning

Rural lifestyle, we talk about it each Sunday morning at 8 on 98.3 WOW-FM (983wowfm) on Highway 6 - Your Road to the Country.  We're this nations only life full hour radio program that talks about life on a small farm or acreage.  We give our listeners tips for creating a sustainable farming operation, livestock and even organics.  It's a great way to spend a Sunday morning.  And, if you're not living in Central Iowa you can still pick up the station by using your computer.  Just click to the this "listen live" link and we'll be right there.

Rural Lifestyle News & Information - September 21

Welcome to the rural lifestyle radio show, Highway 6 - Your Road to the Country!  We're heard each Sunday morning at 8 on 98.3 WOW-FM (983wowfm) here in Central Iowa. 

We're the only full hour, live talk show featuring news and information important for the rural lifestyle.  If you're living on a small farm or acreage this is the place to be.  We'll offer you tips on cattle, horses, specialty crops and a host of things related to increasing the value and enjoyment of your small farm or acreage.

If you've listened to this show for any span of time you know we're passionate about buying locally grown food.  That includes farm to table programs, farmers markets and simply finding a source and buying direct.  We think it's not only smart...but also a healthy choice.  And, this morning we've got a story that backs us up.

It seems we've got a problem with produce coming from outside the United States...because much of it is not regulated or watched or monitored to see what the heck is in this stuff.  Here is the full story from our friends at AP.

And, while we're talking about Mexico...here is a story about how the White House is threatening to veto a measure to help keep YOU safe on highways here in the United States.  Amazing...

As long as we're kicking foreign countries let's wind one up for our friends in The People's Republic of China.  Yep, they are back in the news with their favorite food additive, melamine.  Gosh, where have we heard that word before?

The issue now is the illness and death of many in China who have ingested tainted milk products.  Somewhere along the way we need to ask ourselves how long are we going to sit back and buy this stuff from this tainted country?  You know, we used to have as an advertiser of this show an imported Chinese tractor.  We are so glad we're not banging that drum any longer.  In our mind, the country and their products have become so troublesome it's just not worth it.  But, enough...here is the story about tainted milk products. 

We talked about the farm animals that, just like their human counterparts are having a tough time in Texas in the wake of Ike.  Here is that story.

And, what in the world is going on in Iowa with the environment and a commission selected to deal with those issues.  We see it as more of the same with regard to a rural vs. urban problem.  One that doesn't solve anything for anybody...here's the story.

And...to calm us down this morning...we heard from our good friend Erin Cummings from Allied Insurance.  Erin and her husband run a small hay facility near Indianola and she came by to talk about the difference in insurance products.  When you own a small farm or acreage a regular homeowners policy isn't the best product.  Erin Cummings back with us to talk about what you should consider as you protect your small farm or acreage.  And, if you listen to the interview...man...she makes even insurance sound exciting!

Today, in the city of Indianola, party faithfuls will gather for the 31st Tom Harkin Steak Fry.  We'll be there asking about rural issues.   One of the reasons we figure folks will be talking rural is because Governor Brian Schwitzer is going to be the featured speaker.  Montana is a state that is brimming with new ideas and lord knows...we need some here in Iowa.

Just one story out of Montana is how they are getting together with the public to explain...or try to explain the rising cost of food.  Critical stuff you might think.  Here is the story.

Staying with the political for just a moment.  We've got an interesting story about Barack Obama and what kind of a guest list he'd have if he held a family reunion.  Here is that story.

Our friends at The Daily Yonder took a look at rural, exurban and urban population shifts.  We've got the story today.

We've got three stories about rural living and technology from a report on enterprise zones to what in the world is going on in Georgia and why can't it happen here in Iowa.  We'll also look at telecommuting as a way to save money in increase productivity.

Meals From The Heartland...

Last week over 12,000 volunteers turned out 4,000,000 meals as "Meals From The Heartland" took over Hy-Vee Hall to package food for hungry folks in at least seven nations.  Here is the story from the Des Moines Register.

I had never heard of "Meals From The Heartland" until last week when we were contacted and asked to help.  "Be at Hy-Vee Hall about noon with seven others and we'll put you to work."  That was it.

It was an amazing story about how something so big can come from...nowhere.

We tend to call this kind of thing "grassroots".  There wasn't a lot of fanfare, no fancy ads in magazines or newspapers and no big "media partner".  I asked one of the organizers about all the material, food, products, tables, tape, and even Hy-Vee Hall (Global Spectrum).  She said, "All donated...everything!" 

And people showed up...by the thousands.  There were stories and some social networking but there was another "power" at work:  The power of "doing good".and being "other centered".

So, what's the lesson for those of us wanting to take a product or service to market?  We think three things:

• Truth - Explain the benefit honestly.  No hype.
• Engage - Buying or using this product or service has a value beyond your individual consumption.
• Organize - Doing the advance legwork to understand the target market and acceptance is critical.

This morning we had lots of things to talk about like how if you are poor and don't have a car you are spending more money on groceries than if you are "Livin' the Life".  Here is that study.

Governor Chet Culver fired a shot across the bow of federal officials and congress last week.  We think his concern is well warranted and in addition he should be giving congressmen Bruce Braley and Dave Loebsack a talking to behind the woodshed.  Why would any city hire a $10,000 a month lobbyist, like Cedar Rapids did last week?  They say it is money well spent because these lobbyists know Washington!  We were under the opinion that the "People's House" or the House of Representatives is there for situations just like this.  What in the heck are these two guys doing?  And why is HUD dragging their feet on releasing the money congress appropriated?  Maybe the special session should be a conversation about doing the right thing...all the time. Go get 'em Chet!

Staying political for a moment:  Joe Biden will be in Des Moines this coming Monday afternoon at the Susan Knapp Learning Center for a speech and rally.  Doors open at 1:30 with the program starting at 3:15.  We understand that this candidate for Vice President may actually take questions from reporters. 

Over 4 million meals were created here in Des Moines this past week!  Meals from the Heartland took over the Hy-Vee Hall and hundreds of volunteers, us included, packed meal pouches that will be sent to Haiti, the Dominican Republic and a host of other countries.  It was a great event and we hope to have them on with us in the near future to let us know what they have planned for next year.  (Don't we look great?  What a crew!)

A new ethanol plant opens up in Iowa.  The facility will be in near Dyersville and will be the 32nd bio refinery in the state.  Here is the story.

Here is a great story about promoting the rural lifestyle:   Back in December Mark True and I talked about how, we believe, it is against the interests of smaller rural communities to compete against each other in the world of economic development.  Somebody was listening!  This story about a couple of sisters who started their own website to promote Rural Nebraska is exactly what we were talking about.  Have a look!  (We hope to have them on in the near future.)
