Rural lifestyle, we talk about it each week on Highway 6 - Your Road to the Country this nations only live full, hour radio talk show about small farms and acreage living. We're heard each Sunday morning at 8 on 98.3 WOW-FM (983wowfm).
If you missed the show from this morning, shucks..we make it a point to post each weeks radio show for about three weeks. Then into to "bit bucket". However, listed below are the stories from this week with links to each.
This week on Highway 6 - Your Road to the Country we gave you a brief update on Farm Crawl 2008. It was held last week about 35 miles southeast of Des Moines and it was a smashing success! Above you've got a couple of new friends Kaydee & Sandy showing off some organic veggies (in the shape of a face?) at Coyote Run Farm one of six small farms and acreages featured during the event. If you would like to see more photos from Farm Crawl just click on the photo to your right. Lot's of neat stuff.
So, what's on this week's edition of Highway 6 Radio?
We told you about the latest PETA move to ask public schools to pull Hormel Products out of their pantries. No kidding. Last week it was breast milk in ice cream...this week. Oh my!
Rural Economic Development - OK...for two years we've been telling you about our vision for rural economic development. Most folks think we're just blowing to hear ourselves talk. BUT, what happens when The New York Times picks up a story about building an economic rural base around food, fiber and the Internet? Small rural communities...are you paying attention?
So, you didn't go to college? No problem says John Ratzenberger, all you need to do is get yourself into a trade program and start making a good living. "We don't have enough skilled trades people because so many folks bought this idea that you HAD to go to college. We were wrong." Ratzenberger's foundation, Nuts and Bolts and Thingamajigs offers money to folks wanting to learn a skilled trade. It's a great story.
WOW, a new book created with photos taken in Iowa from the 1930's! The University of Iowa Press has published the book, "Sunday Afternoon on the Porch: Reflections of a Small Town in Iowa, 1939 - 1942". We told you about it...and here is the story.
Speaking of the 1930's...Just a few weeks ago we were crowing about how the Yonder 40 rural stocks had out done the Dow and the S&P 500. We may have spoke too soon. Rural stocks have also taken a beating over the past month. Here's the story from our friends at The Daily Yonder.
Remember when we were telling you about how your food bills would continue to increase past the 6.5% the USDA said they would? Gosh...we were right. It seems the "market basket" survey done several times a year by the Farm Bureau tells us their select product survey finds a 10.5% increase over the same time last year. And, we're not yet done with 2008. Here is that story.
How about some GOOD NEWS? We're ready for it and today we brought you a great interview with writer Sarah Beth Aubrey. The book, "Starting & Running Your Own Small Farm Business" is a must have for those of you who are considering taking the plunge like our friends from Farm Crawl. In it you'll learn about success stories, financial assistance sources, marketing and selling ideas and it's loaded with business plan forms and documents that will go along way toward helping you make your dream come true. So, why not have your small farm or acreage help pay the bills? Seems like a smart investment to us. And, you can buy Sarah's book at any number of locations. Here is the link to Amazon, just in case you get motivated to start up your farm based business.
Sarah Beth Aubrey, we've got her as our guest on Highway 6 - Your Road to the Country! And, if you missed the show, you can download the interview a little later in the morning.
Whew...lot's of stuff on the show today. Thanks for reading and for listening, we're glad you came by!
One more thing: Thanks so much for your support of our rural lifestyle radio show. We've been doing this for nearly two years and we've continued to increase our listeners because YOU have told others about the show and our guests. Do us a favor?
