This morning's show is pre-taped.  (Well, it was snowing LAST weekend!) That's because I'm in Israel where I've been visiting and learning for the past week.  We hope to bring you some of those stories about Rural Israel on our return next week when we do the show live.

And, we'll also spend some time talking about the State Fair - No, not here in Iowa but the fair in Tennessee.  Seems there is a proposal to move it...or lose it!  And when you figure Tennessee has nearly three million more people than Iowa...but only draws 400,000 to the fair...what's up with that?  Read the entire story here.

SPAM...huh?  It's back with a roar!  We figure it's a sign of the times.  We'll give you the story out of Austin, Minnesota.

Rural Living - News From Highway 6 - Your Road to the Country

Every once in a while something comes up that we just have to let you know about.  Here are a couple of stories we're following that we'll flesh out on the rural lifestyle radio show - Highway 6- Your Road to the Country this Sunday:

PETA is back in the news this time with the iinsurance giant Blue Cross.  In a letter sent today to Blue Cross / Blue Shield of Vermontthe executive director of PETA, Tracy Reiman, is asking the insurance company to raise premiums for meat eaters saying that heart disease, diabetes and other chronic health care issues have been linked to consumption of meat.

We're not making this up, here is the news story.

Let's see two weeks ago it was Mother's Milk for ice cream...today it's higher rates for folks that eat a steak..or we suppose...fish?

Meanwhile the group has also called for a hunting ban for anybody under the age of 18!  Exploiting a recent hunting related tragedy in Arizona, PETA sent a letter to the state's governor Janet Napolitano urging the state to take action to ban hunting if you are not over the age of 18.  PETA knows if they kill off the desire to learn the sport...less and less critters get killed.  Here is that story.

So, you notice something here?  We've run a PETA story every week for the past five weeks.  These folks are working overtime throwing just about anything against the wall and hoping it will stick.

On the show today we'll be talking a lot about horses.  For example, are horses livestock?  We've got an update out of the State of Washington that says...no.

And on the heels of that story, also from Washington, we'll tell you about the huge issue of unwanted horses.  If you've been a listener for some time you know where we are on this.  It's a huge issue about slaughter in the United States that nobody seems ready to do anything about.  We contend that horse slaughter should be allowed in the US but much better regulated.

Is Monster.com about to be slayed?  Here is a story about how major US companies are starting their own non-profit job sites.  Job Central is the new site. Makes sense to us.

Last week we told you about how San Francisco and MyFarm was turning back yards into gardens.  Well, add to the list Cincinnati and what they call the Cincinnati Farm Program.  Great idea and one that is catching on all across the country.  Community Supported Agriculture is going urban.

The Iowa Sportsman Radio Hour

You already know about Highway 6 - Your Road to the Country the rural lifestyle show I do each Sunday morning at 8 on 98.3 WOW-FM (983wowfm) but you may not know about the outdoors show we've done for the past ten years each Monday evening at 7pm.

Tonight my co-host Thomas Allen IV will join me talking about how Missouri is attempting to charge 75,000 land owners for deer tags.  Currently Iowa allows land owners (who have ag land) the opportunity to pay just $2 for a deer tag. (Tags for resident hunters run $27.)  As you can imagine it's got folks in Missouri pretty steamed.

But, something we ran into while working on the show for tonight is the issue of "land owner" vs. "agricultural land owner".  If you live on 10 acres of land and grow grapes you pay $2 for a tag.  However, if you live on 10 acres of land and raise...dogs or horses...sorry.  Interesting.

We'll also talk about Thomas and his recent hunt hunt along with Thomas and his poison ivy.  (Get the feeling it's ALWAYS about Thomas?)

Meet Lyle Steinman & Pasha

For those of you who follow the radio show, Highway 6 - Your Road to the Country you've heard our interviews about and with Lyle Steinman, one of the newest and greatest trainers on the Super Retriever Series circuit.

We just received word early last week that Lyle won again at the SRS event in Huntsville, AL.  Lyle tells us that Parsha is one great ol' duck dog!  This gives Lyle Steinman seven dogs qualified for the Crown Championship, which he won in 2006 and was named Sport Dog Team of the Year in 2007.  He's only been in the SRS for four years an has winnings well into six figures!

The "super dog" in this photo is "Pasha" (SRS Pasha XXVII MHG QAA) owned by Curtis Francois and handled by Lyle from Castile Creek Kennels.  (A beautiful 40 acres near St. Joesph, MO.)

Having seven dogs in the Crown Championship is a record...and well deserved for a great guy sponsored by our client Country Vet Pet Foods & Dog Fuel.

On the show today we're going to spend some time talking about bringing jobs back to the United States from China.  It's happening and here is the story to prove it.

It used to be that the Humane Society of the United States was built in the image of saving dogs and cats.  Now that vegan Wayne Pecelle is the president could they be pushing a new agenda, one calling for a meatless America?  Here is that story.

According to this story from the Chicago Tribune there are fewer and fewer Iowa Farmers who actually LIVE and WORK on their own land as the numbers of absentee land owners continues to increase.  What does that mean for you folks who want to start up a small farm or acreage based business?  We think it's time.  Here is the story.

It's Chapter 11 for Verasun.  What does that mean for the five communities here in Iowa that host a Verasun ethanol plant?  We've got a comment on this story.

And, we've got TWO guests for the show today.  First up we'll hear from Valerie Cohen the event organizer for Scrapping for Inclusion a fund raising event going on later today at Beth El Jacob.  The funds raised by this event will go to improving the lives of children with disabilites.  The public event is open at 11am today.  We're grateful that Valerie came along to tell us more.
