Customer Service, 4 Day Work Week - July 27, 2009

Local Newspapers, Buying Local & I'm Sorry - July 22

First up...I am sorry.  Honestly.  Yesterday I was in client meetings and working on a number of marketing items for the people we work for...everyday.  I failed to write an entire show and rather than "wing it" with what I had I slipped into a long discussion with Jonathan Narcisse about a whole slew of things important to Jonathan and perhaps not to you.  While I enjoy Jonathan and think him entertaining we don't share all of the same things when it comes to his view of Des Moines.  So, while Jonathan, who has his show on just before mine called Jonathan's Front Porch, and I will continue to banter for a few minutes after his show....we're back on track as of today:

We've got a surprising news story about the strength of print...in specific areas.  Print can still be a great way to connect with your target market IF that target market tunes into specific print publications.  We'll tell you about it.

Staying on newspapers.  Gannett owned Wisconsin newspapers are giving away about $250,000 worth of advertising.  Here is the story from Editor & Publisher.  Well it's not quite "giving away" but it is darn close.  And...so you know a deal like this had a pilot start here in Des Moines with the Des Moines Register.

Twitter Tips from the Financial Times.  Seems the "experts" agree with lil ol me.  You simply can not expect to sell, sell, sell by using social media.  Here is that story and we'll give you our spin.

Staying with Social Media for a bit:  Here are "20 Reasons Why Social Media Is Not For You!"  And, if you want...you can share your reasons with us during the show!  Maybe I missed some.

We've told you!  A recent survey from LinkedIn Research Network/Harris Poll proves what we've said for years.  Consumers was fun, simply and entertaining ads  NOT ads that make them "stop and think" which is what most advertising professionals "think" they want.  (Kind of like this goofy campaign by the Beef Producers & Beef Check Off...we did "stop and think" and think it's one of the worst in history.)  We've said this for years and finally proof.

As the recession hits even Des Moines folks are talking, once again, about Buying Local.  In fact, this was one of the major points brought up during a meeting I was in this morning with Martha Willits of the Des Moines Partnership.  One of the attendees shared with her and the Urbandale Chamber executive Tiffany Menke about the real power of shopping local.  Did you know that if you buy from a chain or franchise about 20 - 40 percent of every dollar stays in your city?  But, when buying from a locally owned store 80% is retained!  We'll talk about that impact and tie it to several other things and what you, as a local business should be shouting about.

And, we're following an interesting ag story for our new section, "Moo-News".  We figure that if you are going to listen to a business show coming out of Iowa we need to have some interesting ag facts.  Just to let you know we've not forgotten agriculture.

Find huge cost savings in your supply chain.  No kidding. If you remember last week we had Terry Myers from the Business Edge on talking about this very subject.  Today Strategy + Business has a great article, "Debugging the Supply Chain".  We'll talk about it and offer our insight.

Senator Grassley has been getting a bunch of flak from his recent comment, "Get a job with the federal government." as he addressed a public forum about health care.  Folks are making hay out of this...and yes, it's on YouTube.  We'll talk about it from the PR side of things.

Speaking about PR...our friends at the Iowa State Fair are either very good at causing media attention or they need to do a better job at learning WHO their customer is.  In case you have not heard the Michael Jacksonbutter statue is now a "no go".  Over 100,000 people voted online and the silly idea was spanked:  65% NO to 35% YES.  Does not surprise us and we talk about it and knowing your customer today...

Today we talked about the "pickle" General Motors is in with regard to their Buick nameplate.  It seemed to us, years ago, that their core customer was...well very old and soon they would be gone.  NOW GM agrees stating the typical driver/owner of a Buick is well over 70 years old.  Now, the company is trying to attract folks between 40 and 59 who have annual incomes of more than $100,000 a year.  We talked about it.

We love "The Most Interesting Man" campaign from Dos Equis.  Today we looked, in depth, at the product and the message and shared with you the fact that not only is this campaign not "new" but it is successful beyond the dreams of Heineken USA.  Imagine a spokesperson that is beyond "middle age" and admits he does not always even drink...beer.  Amazing!

We also talked about food and Coca-Cola and their very weird campaign, "Open Happiness" and how it contrasts with the 1971 "Hilltop" campaign.  Good stuff.

On the show today...no guest.  But we had some great information about using two and three minute mini-episodes to push products and services.  And, it's something your traditional media outlet may look favorably towards.

We had to bring up Casey Kasem who retired, officially from "American Top - 40" on the 4th of July.  Sad to see him go.  He...was a brand.

We talked about Daffy's, a discount retail chain and their inventive marketing campaign to win a $7,000 a month furnished apartment in Manhattan.  It's a unique idea that you can copy no matter where you are.  If not living space...how about a vehicle or a trip...the list is endless. 

The drug companies and advertising agencies that push their products are pleased that the millions of dollars spent on advertising will still be allowed as a business deduction.  There was a move to disallow...
