Hi and welcome back! Insight on Business is a Monday - Thursday look at ideas and news in the world of advertising, marketing and consumer trends. Every once in a while we'll have a hic-cup in our schedule...like this Tuesday and Wednesday. Our offices are closed for the holiday. However...want to keep you in the loop and offer up something you can use. So, today Insight on Business looks at:
If you are a guy this sight has become almost common place in many restrooms...well, some restrooms. Over at "The Well" there are video messages played above the urinals. But, what about the ladies? Isn't it time there was a way to interrupt them while taking a break in the "powder room"? Now there is. Soon visitors to restrooms in upscale Canadian restaurants will experience a whole new world of advertising. When the sink faucets are turned on the mirror will display a 20-second video advertising message. Just remember to wash your hands. Here is the story from The Toronto Star.
One of the myths of direct mail marketing is that a low response rate equals a failed direct marketing campaign. That's not necessarily the case. Think residual. Let's say you send out a direct marketing piece to 5,000 people and your response is one active buyer. Is it a failure? Nope...it's not even a failure if you received zero active buyers. Why...residual. 5,000 people saw your offer, 4,999 may have made the decision to "not buy...today" but what about tomorrow. Direct marketing can be a wonderful tool but there is sooooo much you need to know about it before you pull the trigger.
If you were paying attention to our "branding lessons" from this week. In case you missed it...here you go. Eggs...can eggs have a "brand"? Hang on for this one. Aldi Foods out of Illinois has the GoldenHen brand of eggs. The outside of the package is pretty much like any egg container. There is the logo, the name...all the "regular stuff". But...inside is an interesting brand statement. You can click on the photos to get the idea. Inside the carton is a quote from Psalm 118. We've got several things going here. Eggs are often consumed in the morning...what a great time to be reminded of what we're about to experience. In addition, it's a "feel good" message that elevates a "less expensive" brand. Finally...the next time you go to an Aldi store notice the customers....I have. This message resonates and we think it's yet another subtle branding piece you should think about. Will it work for everything...no. That's not the point. But I can't do all your work for you... ;-).
Not long ago I had a person ask me about Foursquare the location based social marketing tool...that started out as a game. Now it looks like Facebook might step up and challenge Foursquare. Here is a story from our friends at Social Media Today.
Creative that makes ya...cringe. The other day my bride brings me a newspaper ad. This newspaper ad. I honestly don't know what to say other than, at first, she didn't think it was a serious ad for a serious product. We're sure it is...but...really "pasties"? There has got to be a better way...ya think? Go ahead and click on the ad...it will enlarge for you.
You've heard about "Flash Mobs" right? The first I'd seen was in Israel when a group of kids got together from Nefesh B'Nefesh for this event to call attention to Chanukah.
Pretty cool huh? Well...not so fast. The folks in Philly are upset over "Flash Mob Violence" and are struggling with some way to control the social media use or at least monitor the action. Here is the story from The Philadelphia Inquirer.
Store Brands = Big Business - We reported on this before, once last July and again back in February. It seemed to us months ago that in many locations "store brands" were out performing some of the majors. In fact many majors are hard pressed to find shelf space. Now comes this report from our friends at Nielsen Wire about what has been going on in Europe regarding store brands. Your "take-a-way" from this. There is room to expand and partner. Also, there is a REASON people are moving to store brands. Know what that is? Read carefully.
