Welcome back to Insight on Business with Michael Libbie...it's a look at advertising, marketing and consumer trends produced by our advertising agency, Insight Advertising, Marketing and Communications. Thanks for coming by!
If you read Sunday Morning Coffee you know that Des Moines Local...LIVE is off the air. Last Friday afternoon at 5:15PM I learned that the three people who were involved in the management, R. Duane Goodwin, J. Michael McKoy and Brett Rogers went their separate ways. Think sandbox, toys and kids. It was a heck of a way to reward 60 volunteer broadcasters for months of hard work putting together a truly hyper-local station. It left consumers, broadcasters, guests, advertisers and staff wondering..."What the heck?".
While all this drama was unfolding we had to make a decision about Insight on Business and what to do with an experiment that seems to be gaining traction and, more importantly, has been a wealth of information for our agency clients. Daily, through the hours of research that goes into every 90-minute show, we were able to find and then share great marketing and advertising news and tips with them...and you.
My decision is to stay the course and keep the blog active. In addition, I know we'll be broadcasting on another platform soon...that goes on behind the scenes and as soon as there is news...you'll be first (not the last) to know. So, on we go...different but the same: Today's Insight on Business:
Last week Seth Godin had a remarkable post about "Finding Your Brand Essence". The bottom line here is...if you have to go searching for it...you are already in trouble. So, how DO YOU go about the business of building the "elusive brand"? Here is quick two-minute lesson.
What can you learn from...failure? It's a provocative question but also a learning moment if you are willing to listen. Often failure is the very best way to see the future clearly. Here is a great piece by Rita McGrath from Columbia Business School.
It's Metro Monday here at Insight on Business or we'll to give you some perspective from a Des Moines advertising and marketing source. My friend Andrew B. Clark or "The Brand Chef" cooked up this piece about being "Under a Social Media Spell". It is well worth the read especially if you are considering social media as a marketing tool for your business. You folks from the Business Round-table at the Urbandale Chamber reading this stuff? You should....
If you liked that you'll also get a kick out of "Social Media for Business - Five Tips for Beginners". It's by Leah Betancourt and it reaffirms everything I talk about when I give a SM presentation. Remember kids...Social Media is just ONE of the many tools in your marketing and advertising toolbox.
That's it...and as we walk the streets in search of a home a reminder that Insight on Business is proudly brought to you by:
