Insight on Business with Michael Libbie is our Monday - Thursday look at advertising, marketing, consumer trends and best business practices. We're on starting at Noon Central here at Webcast One Live. And, because the show is interactive you can join in with your comments, questions or answers by using "The Chat" or connect using Twitter, I monitor @MichaelLibbie before, during and after the show. Oh, and today is Thursday...means The Worst Ad of the Week... Here we go:
While this might not be the "worst ad" this has got to be the "worst PR move of the week". The roar was loud when the public learned that a book about sexual relationships between adults and children was being sold on Amazon.com. Amazon released a statement that said they do not censor products...but they have a company policy against porn... Public pressure finally did get Amazon to relent but at what cost? When is the "right time" to sink your heels and when is the wrong time and what is the business throw-back on this? We'll talk about it.
I LOVE to listen to radio sales professionals talk about their craft. Maybe that's because I got my broadcasting start in radio and I've been on both sides of the mic...on air and selling. And, I know how salespeople are seen in the eyes of small business (or even large). Far too many times somebody comes to your small business with "the answer" but the only question that is being answered is, "How much commission will I get if I sell this account?" Yesterday I attended a brief sales seminar sponsored by the Citidal Communications outlet here in Des Moines. John Padgett from Gabriel Media out of Nashville spoke. We took him aside after the event and asked him for 90 seconds...
Is what he is saying about advertising in a tough economy right? Yes, you've heard us talk about this for nearly three years. Is he correct about radio? Yes...and no and I'll give you my take. Finally, what is it that small business people don't get when it comes to advertising? They don't get a "partner" and we'll talk about that too. I wish John had the time to be with us (we asked) but he's still cranking out a seminar. Perhaps some time in the future?
The other day we showed you a print example of how you can stand out when job seeking. It was something we did several years ago for my bride...before she was my bride. Today we were talking about "other ways" to put yourself ahead of the pack with potential employers....like, video. YouTube is already the second largest search engine on the planet so you could post there with links to your video in your online application. Bet folks would notice. The CAUTION would be...make the video matchs the tone of the job. We'll share a bit...
Advertising with a bit of whimsy... Watch for it soon... Kahlua has a new series of ads coming out featuring Mexican actress, Ana de la Reguerawho is seen making silly declarations. In one spot she says, "Spanish makes everything sound more...intriguing." then tries to prove her point by uttering, in sexy voice, everyday words like "zapatos" (shoes) and "grapadoras" (staplers). We think it will be fun...and so we thought you might like to see Ana...a little video...Max?
And, how about "The Worst Ad of the Week"? Friend of our scour the world to find what we think might be the very worst. Sometimes they are local...sometimes nations. This centers on our obvious curiosity with bathroom habits. We've got two example...on video and this horrible print ad for Quilted Northern. Not only that but note the "download app". This must be...The Worst Ad of the Week!
