Jason Glass on Education
Our guest today is the newly appointed chief of the Iowa Department of Education. Jason Glass is awaiting Senate approval, something our sources tell us is going to happen without incident. We'll visit with Mr. Glass on a host of issues, all of them tied to business through education. More about Jason Glass below.
Two Events in Des Moines
We don't do politics here. We do share with you some interesting items that will have an impact on your business and we call those consumer trends. On Monday, in Des Moines, there were two events that will shape the business climate. Members of the GOP met to listen to a number of candidates who may or will be seeking the Republican nomination to take on President Obama in 2012. J. Michael McKoy had that story for you earlier today.
Meanwhile hundreds of union workers and their supporters packed the Iowa Capital Building in support of the Wisconsin Workers and to voice their opposition to a number of bills working their way through the legislature. We'll share some footage of what we saw...
For those of you looking for answers of how leaders can be directors of change within your company you might be interested in the book by Chris McGoff - The Primes - How Any Group Can Solve Any Problem. McGoff lists 32 "primes" that a leader can not be without. Here is the article and text from Smart Blog on Leadership.
Here is the question: "How well do you cultivate and maintain the relationships in your professional network?" If you remember, just last week we talked about having a system in place to communicate (outside of social media) to boost your professional network relationships. Looks like that and this might be good advice. Here is the response from several hundred business people to the question above:
- 45.9% - I respond from check-ins from others but don't reach out myself;
- 44% - I regularly reach out to check in on others to see what they are up to;
- 5.8% - I reach out when I'm looking for a job;
- 4.16% - I reach out when I can help connect two of my connections.
Jason Glass - Iowa Department of Education
If there is one thing Jason Glass enjoys it is communicating using new media with those who support him and those opposed to reforming education. Jason is an avid user ot Twitter @JasonGlassIA and isn't shy about his efforts. We'll dig into what he believes needs to happen here in Iowa and perhaps across the country. Mr. Glass comes from a family of teachers, his wife Sarah is also a teacher. Prior to coming to Iowa on the appointment of Governor Branstad Jason was part of Battele for Kids as Senior Director of Human Capital with a focus on strategic compensation programs. Before that Jason served as Director of Human Resources for Eagle County Schools in Colorado and as a consultant for the Colorado Department of Education. Lot's of questions for Jason Glass today...join us for the hour.
