Memorial Day Marketing Backlash...
You would think a guy that makes his living in advertising would be all over another day to push a sale. But...not this one. I don't mind Christmas ads starting in October, much of the meaning of the holiday has been hijacked by Santa anyway. I think buying ads for a super football game for $3 million each is great. I don't think it's so wrong to turn Mother's Day into a "ShoppingPalooza" and having men quake at the thought of failure. Keeps us on our toes.
Memorial Day is...different.
Being embroiled in several wars with daily body counts posted on-line and thousands of military families trying to cope with multiple deployments yet still keep their home and...family, together takes the marketing thrill out of the day.
Frankly, I don't care to buy a car, mattress, computer, grass seed or new grill today and I think it's insensitive of marketing types to hype Memorial Day Sales... It's just bad taste and consumers are starting to notice. If you read nothing else here notice the consumer trend to dislike treating Memorial Day as yet another retail sales event. And, as these wars stretch on (and they will) and more of our friends, family and neighbors fall the public will, perhaps, stop caring if your business has an extra 20% off...
Have a great Memorial Day and if nothing else take some time to reflect on your ability to, tomorrow, buy that new car in light of all that has been sacrificed. Thanks for reading. - Michael
