So, What Will It Take?
We get calls from budding entrepreneurs all the time asking, pretty much, the same question: "How much is it going to take to market my product/service?" The simple answer is, "I dunno.". And, I really don't. There is sooooo much that goes into creating a brand that will...sell. It's not like going to Von Maur and picking a pair of Allen Edmonds shoes. (both brands rock...by the way) This marketing "stuff" is a craft and while it's not complicated rare is the person who creates the product/service who can also effectively market the product/service without some help and input. And to make the right decisions you need a plan...first. So...word: Plan. What is it you have? Who wants it? Why? Where is your tribe? How will you be found? What are YOU willing to do? Do you know your limitations? What are your marketing strengths? Who else is doing what you do? What is your "voice"? Lots of things my friends...lots.
We found this...fun. It's a look, by AdWeek, at those ads from around the world that have a Gay Theme. IF you have the time take a look...the bad thing is you have to sit through a :30 ad before most of the videos roll...but. If you've got the time you'll be surprised at how early some companies were when it comes to marketing to this demographic. (Photo Credit: lev radin / Shutterstock.com)
We Don't Do Politics...We Do Branding
That's why this branding issue about Iowa is so interesting. Our governor is Terry Branstad, one of his major goals is to "improve the business climate" for the state. This morning the governor's main guy, Tim Albrecht was quoted in the Des Moines Register as saying that the business tax rates in Iowa discourage businesses from being here. Meanwhile...yesterday, CNBC shares a study that ranks Iowa as the 9th best state for business...in the nation. Uhm? I know my friend Tim will be able to shed some light on this...branding problem.
A couple of weeks ago my Bride was sitting with our friends who manage the Urbandale (Iowa) Hy-Vee grocery store. They were talking about promotions and stuff to do and Georgie suggested an "ultimate grill challenge" between a couple of the managers with the proceeds going to their charity JDRF-Iowa. As things go...it's turned into a marketing opportunity. Yesterday we were there doing a photo shoot and this quick video...
We're now building a "classic fight" poster they can hang around the store. Sometimes we do stuff...just for the heck of it. Should be fun...if you're in the area it's July 15th from 4PM to 7PM. Pass the word? On Twitter: @UrbandaleHyVee and @JDRFIowa
We Like Seth...
We're all pushed by deadlines. In our business it seems that they come in rapid succession and we're not always the folks in control of the process. Lots of eyes and hands get into the mix. Then there was this from Seth Godin who talks about doing things...well. Really well...and damn the deadlines. We like...you?
