This week the Farm Progress Company held the annual Hay Expo on their show grounds near Boone, Iowa. At one time I would travel around the country covering farm shows and visiting with farm equipment manufacturers. Today it was a trip to see some friends from Calcium Products, Inc. and more.
Here's a quick video: (Check the size of the new Brillion seeder!)
The event sparked some questions like, "Why hold a hay event in a part of the state where little hay is grown?" I think that answer is, "Because FP already has the location." As you can see the crowd was light, but then a storm was on the way. But one thing had me puzzled:
High Tech Ag & Low Tech Marketing
Clearly agriculture is a leader in technology. From seed to fertilizer to farm equipment high tech is king. Yet...we still tend to market products and services in the low tech world of farm shows. Why? The audience. Agriculture realizes that their core audience is, many times, not connected to new media. While that is changing...it's clearly not here...yet.
