Today is Metro Monday and it's great to be back. Work kept me out of the studio last week and a big thank you to Claire Celsi who sat in the chair on Thursday. Metro Monday is when we focus on stories a bit closer to home and today is a local story that is also...national. Here is the show from today, the links are below.
Our special guest is Rizwan Z. Shah, M.D. the Medical Director of the Regional Child Protection Center at Blank Children's Hospital here in Des Moines. Dr. Shah is nationally known for her work in child abuse and neglect. Involved in public and professional education as well as legislation efforts in the areas of sexual abuse, drug-affected babies, attachment disorder and the effect of violence on families and children, Dr. Shah is uniquely qualified to discuss Iowa and Polk County's involvement in The National Children's Health Study.
We'll visit about the impact of family violence and business, drug affected babies and an in-depth discussion about the importance of The National Children's Health Study. Join us this afternoon starting at Noon Central.
What impact does the announcement by Wal-Mart regarding sustainable agriculture and organic farming have on...Iowa? It could be huge. For months we've been telling you about the rapid change in consumer buying habits when it comes to food choice. Enter the world's largest retailer, Wal-Mart. IF this is more than PR the end result could be a "game changer". We'll talk about it.
Did you hear that? It's the sound of wind coming out of the sails of wind energy. A couple of weeks ago we shared with you the story of vast amounts of natural gas being discovered here in the US, in particular the vast reserves in Pennsylvania...over 500 trillion cubic feet of natural gas...enough to power the country for 200+ years. Now Iowa's home-grown wind energy program may suffer significant set backs. For a peek...here is an insightful article by Dan Pillar of the Des Moines Register.
Speaking of the Des Moines Register - The group known as Central Iowa Bloggers get together on the first Friday of the month. Last week was no different as a bunch of us from #CIB headed over to Panera Bread in Beverly Hills...opps, West Des Moines. Our friend, Kayla Craig @KaylaDMRBiz caught several of us...without coffee...but smiling. "Bloggers Hold Monthly Coffee" sort of sound like it's a church social huh? And...in a way it is the faithful gathering. It's also a great way to actually meet with the people you read and who have some business news to share. So, in your town or village or city...do you have a group that meets (informally) just to visit, network and talk business blogging?
