I Had No Idea...
Back in 1961 President Kennedy set aside the second week of May for Police Officers Week. I'd never been, or really thought much about the various memorial services held for fallen peace officers...until two weeks ago. I was visiting with the Chaplain of the Des Moines Police Department who invited me to the Iowa Peace Officers Memorial Service. I accepted and went yesterday. The room was full of officers from across Iowa. Prior to last evening I had no idea that, nationally, 160 had fallen in the line of duty. That is one law enforcement officer every 53 hours the numbers are up by 37% in 2010. More of us need to talk about this...
Quick side note: When leaving I said to a young officer, "Thank you for your service." He said, "Thank you sir. We don't hear that often. In fact, during the service I got a call from somebody complaining about my service." Sometimes you can't win.
I Was Going To Recommend...But...
I stumbled on a piece by Erica Swallow, "6 Small Business Sites to Learn From" and was going to recommend you spend some time to review. Then...I did. While her six suggestions make sense (yes...she says you need to Blog!) her choice of websites are...awful. Many load slowly, some have annoying music, most are confusing, SEO is limited and one, Fashism is just...silly. Go ahead...tell me I'm wrong. I'll wait.
You've seen him on "America's Next Great Restaurant", "Celebrity Apprentice" and "Top Chef Masters"...now we get to see him in the isles of Midwest regional grocery store chain, Hy-Vee. Hy-Vee and Curtis Stone? It's a leap into the big time for Hy-Vee to hire such a high profile celebrity to talk about easy home cooking. But we like it because:
- His Energy - While "helpful smiles" are nice. Curtis Stone jumps around and engages. Nice.
- His Style - He may be famous but he seems like the kind of guy you could have a conversation with.
- His Lingo - Hey...here in the Midwest when you have an accent it gets noticed. These ads...get noticed.
It's an older video...but catch the "style" and "flair". Hy-Vee? Going to be interesting to watch...and should up their younger demos?
Keeping Your Social Media...Personal
At a social event do you barge in the conversation or linger a bit, learn what is being said and then offer up some useful information or conversation that adds to the topic? If you choose "B" you're in line with what Shel Israel suggests in this blog from American Express Open. Remember, even though you are proud of what you have/own and write...doesn't mean you can or should do away with good manners.
Diversion - Nigerian Yahoo Boys
We've all seen them, we've all warned about them and we've all made jokes about the Nigerian mass e-mails promising a world of wealth only to be taken in the end. But, what really goes on? Here is a great diversion for you from Sarah Lacy, "The Chilling Story of Genius in a Land of Chronic Unemployment". Good reading...even if it's a diversion.
That's It & Thank You!
The deal is I give you an hour of research and writing and you give me ten minutes (Well, maybe more if you watch the Curtis Stone Video.). Thanks for coming by and let's keep in touch?
