Each Friday we take a look at some of the advertising/marketing stories you may have seen...or perhaps missed. Then offer up our comments. We hope you can learn something for your business. HyVee Is Smiling...Again
For decades the Iowa based grocery chain HyVee has used as a slogan "A helpful smile in every isle." Sometimes the butt of jokes but always recognizable the company has decided to roll out a new marketing program putting the "smile" front and center with existing store employees who identify themselves as, "I'm a helpful smile". We like. Along with this change the store has moved away from the clutter in their print pieces and include more employee images and a short caption of each. The result is the "humanization" of a brand and a much cleaner look. Something we've talked about before. Nice job.
Consumer Retention - Nice Idea
What happens when you close a retail center to move into a new facility...but that closure is going to last a full month? Even if you've got a VERY LOYAL following your business may suffer. Here's a neat idea from our friends at HyVee (Gosh, are we pimping them or what?) These Customer Loyalty Cards are given out by the Urbandale HyVee that is closing mid-July not to re-open until mid-August. The corporate thought is to send shoppers to OTHER HyVee stores where they can rack up up to $80 in HyVee Cash and then spend in Urbandale when the new store opens. How can you use the idea? There are many ways to scale this. Enjoy.
Social Media ROI
Lots of businesses discount the power of social media while others embrace the ability to cross market to consumers. We're often asked about the return on investment a business might enjoy. Here's a real story about how a small business owner, who just started out, impressed us with his honesty and social media marketing. Joey's Auto Shop won our hearts...and minds. Very cool.
Andy Griffith & Post Toasties
This week we lost Andy and we've seen loads of interesting tributes to one of the more iconic faces and voices we know. His simple (some say corny) manner worked as he pitched lots and lots of products. Here's one that we think you'll like along with a great story line from our friends at Advertising Age. Really worth a look and a read. What about your business? Can you capture more with a little...retro? We think so.
Speaking of Spokespeople
Is Mike Rowe the perfect spokesperson? We think so and wrote about it in their piece that highlights why. We think the key to being a spokesperson is having the ability to be believable and work in many areas. Mike balances from comedy to serious to super friendly without acting. Here's that piece on The Perfect Spokesperson. And a question for your company to consider.
Rural Hip-Hop...
We do lots of work in the agricultural sector and that's why when we saw this video we had to share. Kansas Farm kids doing their thing. Eminem it is not but for those of you who enjoy "rural" it's worth a click. The interesting thing is the video received over 250,000 views in less than a day. Who says video doesn't...work?
Video Production and Fun
Next week we're headed out of town for several days to film in South Dakota and Nebraska. It's a full crew adventure where we set up lights, sound, clothing...you know "the works". But, video presentation doesn't have to be that expensive to be effective. Here's a quick piece we did using a hand-held camera for our client Desmund Adams who is running for the Iowa State Senate.
See...
Thanks for coming by and have a fantastic weekend!
