Public Schools in Crisis - Meet Mike Beranek

There is so much going on when it comes to education in Iowa and frankly many other states.  From inflation costs, to state support of public schools to teacher pay, educators and a work/life balance, public money being used to pay for private and often religious schools. Just recently the Des Moines Public Schools (largest district in the state) announced they may have to close school buildings and layoff staff. In this interview with Mike Beranek the president of the Iowa State Education Association we take a deep dive into those issues and more. Oh, one other thing: there is a link between a solid public education and business as employer expectations demand better educated workers in a rapidly changing work environment.  So much to talk about.

June - A Month of Learning: Refugees and Immigrants

Throughout the month of June many communities will be holding special events to mark World Refugee Day on June 20. A March for Peace in Ukraine from Des Moines, iowa

For weeks we've been reporting the impact the war in Ukraine is having on business. From stock market fluctuations to businesses pulling out of Russia to food supply issues as the war is disrupting wheat exports from Ukraine. Today the impact on people. Not the people who live in Ukraine but people of different races, religions and cultures coming together to protest the war and march for peace. Recently there was such a march in Des Moines, Iowa and we talked to some of the organizers who come from not only Ukraine but also Liberia. We are being told that the two hour video conference between President Biden and President Xi Jinping was a frank and honest discussion about Ukraine. The White House said after the call that Biden described the implications and consequences if China provides material support to Russia. Meanwhile Xi said that his country was not in favor of the war and had they known about it they would have tried to stop it. Two words, stay tuned.  In other business news:

• The markets had a surprisingly good week;
• Not every U.S. business has left Russia;
• It's the battle of the dollar stores;
• This CEO made over 22 million dollars last year;
• But, that's not all his board got wealthy too;
• GM to buy up shares of an autonomous vehicle;
