Making a Global Difference - The Society of St. Vincent DePaul

They say that being "in the moment" is important because you never know what opportunity might pop up. That is exactly what happened when I answered an email sent to our city by Steve Havemann from the Society of St. Vincent DePaul. Several years ago I spoke to a local chamber and met a volunteer of the organization so I was somewhat aware of what they do...but wanted more. Steve is the Executive Director of the Des Moines Society and also sits on the national board so we take a broad view of their work and then talk about his famous grandfather, Joe D. Batten the author of the amazing book "Tough Minded Leadership" and others. Here is a link to those books...and the final one co-written by Steve.  What a great story from all sides and grateful I was paying attention.

Today Wall Street put a bunch of things behind them and focused on job numbers ahead of the official report due out on Friday.  Here's what we've got for you today:

• Strong employment data an a rumor lifted the markets;
• Yesterday a big day for Tesla...today? Not so much;
• Macy's is closing and now opening stores;
• The trade deficit shrinks;
• The Wall Street Report;
• Because of a duck, insurance has become fun;
• Leadership changes at LinkedIn.

Those stories plus:  It's called "market research" you know...what people like and don't like when it comes to products and services. But in this interview there is a major twist. My guest is Robert (Lewy) Lewis the principal at Quester a company doing business with Fortune 500 and Fortune 100 companies. While there are many market research firms out there Quester is a bit different because they have perfected collecting consumer responses using artificial intelligence. What does that do to the sampling and speed of reporting? We'll let Lewy share that with you.

Daniel Pettit who, along with his wife, created a non-profit called Trailhead International  which is in the business of building churches that become community centers in emerging nations. Volunteers - Critical to the Service of 370,000 AARP-Iowa Members

We sit down with Brad Anderson the State Director for AARP-Iowa and talk about several items and then get into how the organization uses volunteers to serve the 370,000 Iowans who are members.
