Hope to Build a New Sikh Temple in Urbandale, Iowa

Today you'll hear from Baljit Singh Virdi one of the organizers of an effort to build a new Sikh Temple (Gurudwara) in Urbandale, Iowa. This is not a hyper-local story but an effort to help you better understand their faith, which we found to be so very interesting. While they have an aging facility in West Des Moines the goal here is to meet their expanding membership and have a building that can also serve as a community center for everyone and not just members of the Sikh faith. Our area of the Greater Des Moines Metro has been busy cleaning up after a tornado touched down in the City of Urbandale and Windsor Heights.  There also was damage in downtown Des Moines as the twister made it's way across the metro. The second big storm to hit this area in less than a month. DART, Funding Issues and a 40% Cut to Service

One of the most impactful issues facing workers and employers is transportation. If a family doesn't own a reliable vehicle or if people don't want/need that expense their option if public transportation...get on the bus...Gus.  However a lack of funding has the Des Moines Area Transit Authority (DART) considering a 40% cut in service. Is there a solution?  Meet Erin Hockman the Chief External Affairs Officer for DART who shares not only the impact of a cut but also how we can fix the funding shortfall.  And, yes, you get a chance to weigh in on the proposed "franchise fee" increase at a number of public forums you can find here on the DART Website.

Fall Fest 2023 - Get To Know Our Community

While this may seem "hyper-local" it very well may give you and your community some ideas on how to create a winning event for the whole family. They head up the Special Events Committee for the community of just over 5,200 people located in the middle of the Greater Des Moines Metro with over 700,000 folks. Our focus is on the Windsor Heights Fall Fest that takes place on October 6th and 7th. Here you'll learn more about the community and what happens when people band together to get some things...done. For the interview you'll meet Michael Berger and Ashley Ezzio from Uplift the Central Iowa Basic Income Pilot. It's really an interesting experiment in how this study might show the benefit in getting a bit more money to strapped families. The program is in concert with the University of Pennsylvania and has been tried in other parts of the nation. The Windsor Heights Book Fair with Tyler Granger

Sometimes, even though we have an international audience, we get to do some hyper-local things and that's what you're getting today.   Why? Because we think this is such a neat idea we hope that someone in another town, state or nation might pick up on the idea and do a local book fair where you live. Here you'll meet Tyler Granger from Windsor Heights, Iowa who has put together a book fair featuring Iowa writers ranging from history to news to romance to mystery to children's books.  He has done a masterful job in promoting the event as well. And to complete the conversation you'll also meet Julie Granger a former school teacher who has already penned several western romance novels with a twist.
