DSM Civil & Human Rights Symposium

For over three decades the Des Moines Civil and Human Rights Commission has presented a symposium intended to both hear and educate the general public about issues that face us all. Here you'll meet Joshua Barr the Director of the commission and Ryan Arnold the Director of Community Engagement at Drake University. We'll start with an understanding of what the commission does, why Drake is supporting the event and then get into what the symposium is about and how the topics came to be.  Registration is OPEN until March 6th. In addition to the symposium there is a kick-off event the evening of the 17th at 6PM with Vanessa Roberts "Afropuff Lederhosen: A Critically Comical Investigation of Race" which will also be at Drake. 19 Business Professionals Making a Difference in 2019

Recently Cityview Magazine's Business Journal held a special event honoring nineteen individuals for their outstanding work in the Greater Des Moines Metro. Nineteen people whom the Business Journal says are "making a difference" in 2019. We were there and spoke to a number of the recipients following the gala celebration. While we couldn't get to them all we did visit with:

Local Option Sales & Service Tax - Polk County, Iowa

Several communities in Polk County, Iowa are set to vote in March on what is being called the Local Option Sales and Service Tax which would add a penny to the sales tax there. We sat down with Brad Anderson the State Director for AARP-Iowa to talk about the impact of the tax on people living there. Some of the things he says may surprise you. While the issue doesn't come up for a vote until March of 2019. AARP-Iowa said they want to get way out in front of the process.

• FedEx says the slowing economy is hurting their future;
• The rural town of Slater, Iowa and cutting edge water technology;

Also today we'll lead off with Brad Anderson the State Director of AARP-Iowa as he talks about a March vote on something called the Local Option Sales and Service Tax. Is it something that older members in Polk County, Iowa will support...and why should they. 

Then we'll spend some time with Anthony Carroll the Legislative Director for AARP-Iowa and talk about a measure the organization is pushing in the upcoming session of the Iowa Legislature. It's called the Iowa Care Act and we'll spend some time talking about the effort which will touch every family in the state.
