Hope to Build a New Sikh Temple in Urbandale, Iowa

Today you'll hear from Baljit Singh Virdi one of the organizers of an effort to build a new Sikh Temple (Gurudwara) in Urbandale, Iowa. This is not a hyper-local story but an effort to help you better understand their faith, which we found to be so very interesting. While they have an aging facility in West Des Moines the goal here is to meet their expanding membership and have a building that can also serve as a community center for everyone and not just members of the Sikh faith. Non-Visible Disabilities and the Fear of Flying

It was another of those chance meetings. I was sitting in the lobby of the Hotel Fort Des Moines visiting with Jenny Schuetz about our scheduled interview when a man stepped up and said, "Excuse me, but I heard you talking about the interview maybe we could do a segment? I help people with non-visible disabilities better enjoy air travel by helping them experience what it's like in an aircraft."  And so I met entrepreneur Jonathan Sutter who founded TravelingWiki.com an organization that encourages airports to install rooms that can help folks with autism and other non-visible disabilities become less fearful of flying. Some of those "rooms" are recreated airplane cabins complete with seats and a place for the pilots. I learned much from Johnathan and my guess is that you will too.

Israel a Business Story with Jarad Bernstein

Several days ago Jarad Bernstein, a close friend, and the Executive Director of the Jewish Federation of Greater Des Moines, Iowa came back to the United States following three days in Northern Israel which happens to be a major tourist and agricultural section of the country. Here we talk about the economic impact the war in Gaza is having on local businesses and the people who run them  We'll also discuss some amazing things volunteers from all over the world are doing in their support of Israel at this critical time. Clearly a story that needs to be told and we cover lots of ground in this conversation.

A History Lesson with Gale Brubaker

When we saw the presser about the West Des Moines Historical Society we thought this would be a very hyper-local story but it looked interesting and who doesn't want to help a non-profit reach a financial goal. Were we surprised, no shocked, that this turned out to be a national if not global story. Here you will meet Gale Brubaker a remarkable women who does just about everything for this group.  Her knowledge base is amazing and what she says about the history of the Jordan House, it's first occupants and their dedication to abolishing slavery is remarkable. In addition Gail drops a  serious name: abolitionist John Brown. Finally one thing she said has stuck with me since doing this interview, "We all make history everyday.
