We'll share how making no decision on a product or service really is a decision and how that decision is hurting your brand. Five tips to keep your brands luster.
Who Controls Your Brand?
Here's a real time story about how critical it is you pay attention to the little things. Otherwise all the branding money you are paying out goes up in smoke. Tip of the hat to the Des Moines Register.
Social Media - Lost Its Way?
What started out as a way for individuals to communicate across great distance about all sorts of issues has been kidnapped by...marketing. What's the result? We'll share.
Visual Campaigns - Did This Go Too Far?
A campaign to point out the need to get tested for cervical cancer was launched last week and some are saying "poor taste". We'll share.
Selling with Sex
We'll share with you the new campaign from H&M and also wonder aloud why we didn't get it. But, then again, maybe we're not the target?
Got Panache?
Beau Fodor says that everybody can get it if they want it. We'll visit with Beau and have him explain the roots of his business, define what panache is and exactly how you can get some. Beau Fodor in the guest chair talking Panache about 9:15.

It's a toss up but we'll still share.

Worst Jobs of 2013
Our friends at Career Cast list out the worst jobs you can have. While we're not sure it's accurate we'll share and say, "Pity on those poor newspaper reporters." If you graduate from college this year...you might want to pay attention.
Best Jobs of 2013
We'll also do a quick review of what Career Cast says are the very best jobs. Not surprisingly most have to do with technology.
This Might Be Different
If you go into business simply to make money is that a good strategy? We might all learn a lesson from the Minnesota Wild owner Craig Leipold and why his hockey club is excited about the Iowa Wild coming to Des Moines. We'll share the video clip and a little back story about the guy from Racine, Wisconsin who gets it.
Break Out the Hanky
It's a debate that's gone on for years: Which ad campaigns are better: "Fact Based" or "Emotional"? Each can work well depending on your creative. However, we've got our opinion and in this segment we'll share with you how you can build a solid campaign based on...emotion.
Digging in the Dirt
It is a booming business and our in-studio guest Larry Cleverley is here to talk about organic/sustainable farming. Who is buying this stuff? Where does he sell it? Why are consumers demanding more? What special events help folks like Larry better market their products and...what words of caution does he have for folks getting started. Larry Cleverley from Cleverley Farms(and on Twitter @DirtFarmerLarry) with us for the interview.
Worst Campaign of the Week
This is pretty close to home. Recently Iowa Health Services changed their name to Unity Point Health. They didn't change the logo much and that's the same direction they should have gone when somebody wrote some awful copy for their television ads. We'll share what we think and, as always, we're interested in your take.

Most Corporate Executives Don't..."Get It"
When it comes to using social media for business the majority of business executives still don't get why their business should be engaged. For those of us who are in business and engaged in helping business leaders learn the value of social media this is not surprising. Sad, but not surprising. We'll break down the numbers and share our insight.
Social Media Education
Last week in Des Moines there was yet another social media training session. This time the focus was to be social media strategy. What should business do to better engage consumers or sell more...stuff. We didn't get to go but did follow the session on Twitter. Some thoughts about social media education and what your business should consider before you invest in attending an event any event.
Eight Marketing Truths
What eight things can make a HUGE difference when it comes to creating your marketing plan? We've got them and we'll share with you.
The 800lb Gorilla & Main Street
Get ready because it's coming to a station near you. Our friends at Walmart are going to "double down" on local television advertising switching dollars from national to local. The "largest retail chain in the world" is going to create 1,500 localized television ads in 2013 and pepper them in 60 markets across the US. While their aim is grocery items you can bet this new strategy will also help bleed "Mom & Pop" on Main Street. Before you hang up the "Out of Business" sign we've got some things you need to do, starting today, to succeed in spite of what the gorilla does.
Social Media Club of Des Moines
Our studio guests are going to visit with us about business and social media. Suzanne Hull and Kelly Sparks will be in the chair and sharing what the SMCDSM is, what they do and why the hell business owners/managers/marketers might want to take notice.
Worst Social Media Fails of the First Quarter
We figured that as long as we had some folks in studio talking about business and social media...we might share with them, and you, some of the biggest business social media fails of 2013. One other thing: IF you "think" nobody is saying anything about your brand or your business...guess again.
That's it! Insight on Business - The News Hour with Michael Libbie is live at 8:45 Monday mornings at Webcast One LIVE and right back here anytime you want. Thanks for coming by!

Lot's to share, let's get to it:
Are You "Snackable"?
My friends over at Skyward offered up three simple thoughts about the information you share online. The bottom line is..."Snackable Information". I'll explain how critical that is when it comes to not only digital advertising but advertising in general.
Not All Networking...Works
If you're active in the world of "networking" you know how many different events happen each week. Not long ago I was talking to a person who told me he attends four to five each week. Really? I'll share with you what we've noticed as critical differences between the many events we've attended and what might be your best bets.
Sending Consumers/Customers/Leads Away?
I'll share with you a true story about how a company routinely sends consumers to their competitor(s) and can't understand why that is not in their best interests. Maybe it's time to take a hard look at your communication procedures?
Three Solid Tips for Blogging
I know, you don't have the time. But, the other big question is, "Do you have the patience?" Sharing your story is not a quick fix. We'll share more about what you should be doing.
The Back-Story of Renting Apartments/Condos
So much has changed since I rented my first apartment. Back in the day perspective renters would scour the newspaper. Then somebody thought it would be cool to put out little magazines dedicated to rental properties. Then Craig's List and now several companies are at work marketing rental options online. Lots of changes and options out there. Our in-studio guest is Tina Padavich who is the president of the Central Iowa Apartment Alliance an "industry support and educational organization" who "...advocate for quality rental housing in Iowa". We'll visit with Tina about the focus on rental housing, the growth in the industry, what folks in this industry are most concerned with and how they advertise and market their properties. Should be interesting. Tina Padavich in the seat, join us.
Best Rental Ad...Ever?
Advertising that works is often...edgy. We'll show you one that made us do a double take. Hey...worked for us.
Worst Ad of the Week
Actually, this isn't so much an ad as it is the Worst Campaign of the Week. It's hot, fresh and oh so...dumb.
That's it. Join us LIVE at 8:45 Monday Morning at Webcast One Live or right back here later in the day for the re-broadcast.

Are QR Codes...Dead?
Last week we ran across a post by B L Orchman for Advertising Age which came out and said that there is much better technology than the ol' QR Code. While that may be true we'll share with you why we think they are not dead and how they can help you boost web traffic IF you use them right.
Pssst...Wanna Buy a Banner Ad?
The cat is out of the bag when it comes to wasted advertising dollars and banner ads. The simple fact...folks don't click on them...much. We'll share with you ten amazing facts about why buying a banner ad on somebody's web page is...a waste of time and money.
We Don't Do Politics But...
Marriage equality is not only a personal issue it is fast becoming a business issue. Recently Anheuser Bush put up the red banner with the equal sign on their Facbook Page and Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz served up some commentary at a recent stockholders meeting. We'll share the story, some video and a tip.
Let's Talk...Radio
It's an old technology so the question "Is radio still a wise advertising investment?" begs to be asked. And we we'll pose that question and many others to Jeff Delvaux the General Manager of the Des Moines Radio Group. Hang around as we talk about what works with radio, what doesn't and the critical nature of exactly who is making programming decisions. Is it local...and does it matter? Lots of "radio talk" coming your way and stuff you can use for your business including pricing, demographics, changes in the industry and much more. Jeff Delvaux in the studio talking...radio and radio advertising. I promise you...you'll learn something important for your business.
Worst Ad of the Week
If it's Monday and you're watching Insight on Business we've got to share the "Worst Ad of the Week". This time with a...twist.
Remember, you can watch Insight on Business - The News Hour LIVE at 8:54 Monday on Webcast One Live or later right here...during your own time.

The Scary Buying Cycle & Retail
Once upon a time retail business owners controlled the advertising media. They would create a print, radio or television ad and push that message to consumers. They still do that but the consumers have taken control of the message. That has lengthened the buying cycle and if your business fails to engage... We'll share what has happened and what you can do to get "back in the game".
Want To Build A Crowd?
This past weekend some savvy new business owners had a Grand Opening. Hundreds of people flocked to the event. They sold out of several items within hours and the crowd shared their experiences with their friends encouraging them to join in on the fun. All of this without buying one second of radio or television time. All of this without buying one piece of print. How did they do it? It was not "free" and it was not "easy" but it worked. We'll break it down for you and congratulations to the 515 Brewing Company for some nice work.
Co-Create Your Next Product/Service
Who Says YOU have the best ideas? No doubt...you. But, have you ever thought your consumers might be able to help you create create the "next big thing"? We'll give you four solid ideas on how successful businesses turn their customers into the new research and development department and why that works.
Repackaging Works & Why
Last week Pepsi announced the first major repackaging of their product in 16 years. We're wondering what took them so long. Sure, it's not that they had a lousy product or bad packaging for those 16 years. But, repackaging sells and creates a buzz. What your business (and Pepsi) can learn from the heady days of Detroit automakers.
The Business of Politics
We've invited Susan Judkins and Desmund Adams into our studio to talk about the area of politics most folks never see...the business side. We'll talk about what they learned from their recent run for public office, what business decisions they were surprised they had to make and how politics and business go hand-in-hand. It is "The Backstory of Running For Office" with two bright friends. Believe me...you'll learn something here.
Worst Ad(s) of the Week
Each week we share with you either the BEST or the WORST ad of the week and help you better understand why we "crown" our "winners". This week we'll show you two. Two ads we thought were disgusting.

Saying "No!" To Social Media for Business
Each
week our agency visits with business owners, managers and marketing
people that continue to resist using social/new media for their
business. Today I'll share with you the reason and why we think it's a
bad choice.
When Social/New Media Goes Wrong
What one person may think is funny another will find it offensive. We'll show you an example from KGAN - CBS 2 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and give you several key tips to avoid ticking off your customers.
New TV Show - Bike People
This weekend Iowa Public Television aired the first peek at Bike People a new show about the world of bicycling, Iowa and the people who are involved in the sport. My friend Forrest Ridgway, owner of Bike World, thought this would be a neat way to share with others what goes on in bicycling. He and Suzet along with friend Brian Duffy were part of the premiere. We'll show a clip and share some thoughts.
DishCrawl Des Moines
We're talking food with our guests Mandi Borst and her husband Chris who are doing DishCrawl DSM this week. Why a "dish crawl"? What goes into starting something new? What's it been like to get eating places lined up and who is doing the first Des Moines DishCrawl? We'll talk about it all and share the information with you.
Worst Ad of the Week
And, as always, we've worked hard to find what we think just may be the Worst Ad of the Week. We'll show you during our final segment.

The Business of Politics
Running for public office may not seem tough or like a business...but it is. Today, in studio, we'll visit with Desmund Adams who ran for the Iowa State Senate in District 22 and Susan Judkins who ran for the Iowa House in District 43. Our goal is not to discuss politics but the "business of politics". What goes on behind the scenes when a person commits themselves to a life in the spotlight. We'll talk about the decisions, the time and the issues that face any person who seeks to serve the public in an elected office.
Worst Ad of the Week
Staying with politics for a moment...we present to you, in the closing segment the "Worst Ad of the Week". You have been warned.

This Ad Gives Me The Creeps
Which one? Let's just say having a former United States Senator and one time presidential candidate pitching reverse mortgages to old folks...sucks. We'll share the Worst ad of the Week.
We Think It's Just...Tired
Never mind that JC Penny pumped in $504 million (a 14% increase) into their advertising spending in 2012 and still managed to post sales loses of 25% over the year before. Why? We'll share what happens to most brands/businesses when they get "too tired". But, better yet I'll offer you several ways to avoid becoming the tired brand/business.
