Since before announcing my campaign for the Windsor Heights City Council I've been out knocking doors. To date I've knocked on nearly 400 doors and talked to a couple of hundred residents. It's been a great learning adventure...and I've still got hundreds more to knock.
About 60% of the time, depending on where I'm out campaigning, I hear about sidewalks. I can share with you that there are many folks who are truly upset and believe the city didn't need to spend the money. I'm always asked if I am "Pro sidewalk" or "Anti-Sidewalk". I don't hide my opinion and have answered that I think putting sidewalks in Windsor Heights a positive for the future growth of our community.
But, I don't let the conversation end there.
I simply say, "If sidewalks are your biggest issue then we really need to have a conversation because I would think your biggest concern would be that Windsor Heights has the second highest property tax rate in the Metro and you might want to be interested in how we can do a better job at economic development which would help give you, as a homeowner, some property tax relief."
It is then when the issue of having, nor not having, a sidewalk starts to fade and we can begin to talk about the economics of creating an improved retail and commercial footprint and start to assuage the sting of our private property tax burden that, if left unchecked, will make it impossible for first time home buyers and those on fixed incomes be able to afford to live in Windsor Heights.
If you want to talk about sidewalks...let's do it. But if you want to talk about building a solid base for the future I'm all in!
