In a campaign like this in a very small area we tend to keep track of where we place our campaign signs. And, because the city has an
ordnance that we've got seven days from the election to pick them up...we better keep track.
Last night I was out door knocking and asking about placing a yard sign if the folks agreed with my issues. Robin said she would be "delighted" to have a sign in their front yard. We always make a deal out of it because visibility is key to winning an election. So, we said "thank you" and placed the sign. BAM! High traffic, great location and Robin and I hit it off.
This morning it was...gone!
What happened? Somebody steal it? Did I offend somebody? Did I take too much for granted? And, with each sign costing $11.75 they are a real investment. What happened?
So I went back knocked and Robin opened the door. I said, "Hey, Robin I was just out walking the area and noticed the sign we put in last night was gone. Was it something I said or maybe somebody took it?" Robin, clearly nervous said, "Well, our neighbors have a sign up for another person and we didn't want to get them upset so we took it down and it's in the garage next to my car." I said, "I understand but there are three seats open on the city council and so my sign in your yard just gives me a chance to be your second choice if not your first." She was puzzled and asked, "Three seats are open?" We talked about it and she said, "I am so glad you came by. Let's put it back!"
Civics lesson complete and look, if I can't be YOUR first choice maybe you'll consider me for your second choice. That's cool. The election is November 7th.
