Sunday Morning Coffee is about politics, sex, religion, gossip...all the stuff you hunger for. Or so it would seem. Here I look at some of the stories that made news and those that may have missed your view. If you feel like connecting we can do that on Twitter @MichaelLibbie or here is my personal Facebook Page. My name is Michael P. Libbie (no hiding kids...) and I approved of this...rant. Grab a cup but, WARNING...the coffee is HOT!
Crazy Coming To Iowa?
Except for their flawed marketing plan I like the Girl Scouts. (I'll get back to that later...) But it figures that a commie bastard, like me, who pushes a homosexual agenda would like the Girl Scouts...right? Oh, you didn't hear about the Indiana Republican who wrote a letter to his constituents blasting the Girl Scouts for promoting lesbian activities, Planned Parenthood and sexuality? Seriously, and the people of Indiana elected Bob Morris. For those of you who think these sort of things happen only "East of the Mississippi" hang on. There are crazy folks in the Iowa Legislature who can top this... Here is the Indiana story from our friends at CNN. See, I don't make this stuff up.
Meanwhile in Wisconsin
Republican members of the Wisconsin State Senate were successful in overturning an Equal Wage Law that protects women (2012 is NOT a good "Year of the Woman") from pay discrimination. What is the deal with my friends in the GOP? They may think that "business" is the new "lord & savior" but I think the backlash will come back to kick 'em in the fanny.
Last week Sen. Brad "Personal Responsibility" Zaun decided to put forth a bill that he said, "Has no chance of passage." It's nice that he has that much time on his hands. His latest offering to Iowa was to eliminate the Iowa Department of Education. He says it just does not work so we need to tear it down and re-build it. This is what happens when voters continue to elect folks with an exclusive agenda and who are joined at the hip with other "interesting folks" like Michele Bachmann. Anyway, the Senator was correct it did not make it out of committee but...I will promise you this will be a campaign theme we'll hear again...and again.
Meanwhile, thanks to our friends at theDes Moines Register, here is a list of Bills that have been signed into law...so far. Make sure you click on the other links to see the huge number of bills that are dead...or still waiting. You'll notice our legislature has made "great progress" on the USS Iowa and "strangling". At this rate they will be in session through July.
Sen. Pat Ward & "Hundreds of Bills"
I thought you might like to see this piece from our friends at WHO-TV13. Here you will see and listen to Sen. Pat "I Am NOT a RINO!" Ward(R-West Des Moines) as she bemoans the fact that hundreds of "pro-business" Bills have been stalled in the Democratic controlled State Senate. "However, when pressed on this, Sen. Ward could not name a piece of legislation that she wished had not survived funnel week." I'm confused... But, to leave the "double negatives" aside, her idea of property tax reform is to put an added burden on homeowners and cash strapped villages, towns and cities and then give "big business" the tax break. It's not going to fly Senator...no matter how you and the Minority Leader wish it to be.
One Seat...
Currently the Iowa State Senate is controlled by the Democrats with a one-seat majority. If you are an Independent or a Democrat or a progressive Republican and you too think these ideas are really...bad: 1) Allowing guns on college campuses and in classrooms, 2) Amend he Constitution to allow convicted felons the opportunity to carry guns, 3) Outlaw all abortions even in the cases of rape or to save the life of the mother, 4) Property tax reform that shifts the burden onto cities and homeowners while giving big business a tax break... I hope you'll join me in working for and electing a fresh, new, thoughtful leader to the Iowa Senate, Desmund Adams. Go ahead...have a look.
Adams for Senate Fundraiser
Is going on today in West Des Moines. Desmund will be joined by Iowa Congressman Leonard Boswell at 2:30PM. Hope to see you there. Here's the information.
Black & Gold Ball
Nope, you won't read about this in the morning newspapers and that's too bad. Last night the Zeta Kappa Lambda Educational Foundation held the Black & Gold Ball where thousands of dollars in scholarship funds were given to six deserving future leaders: Hollie Gray III (Des Moines, Iowa), Bailey Kanne (Carroll, Iowa), Jenna Lamberrtz (Carroll, Iowa), Chelcie A. Scott (Iowa City), Nasir Smith(Ames, Iowa) and Quentin Smith (West Des Moines, Iowa). These young people stood in front of hundreds of attendees and each spoke eloquently about education and leadership. I've gotta tell you, this had missed my radar until last week. The Zeta Kappa Lambda Educational Foundation is doing some amazing work in this city. Go ahead, have a look at the video...it's a little long but...WOW.
Nice huh?
Girl Scouts & Cookie Marketing
I'm not sure about you but what other company markets like the Girl Scouts with their cookies? I mean, you can only buy them from a friend or from a table in front of the grocery store. "Knock, knock...psssst...wanna buy some...cookies?" Amazing when you look at it huh?
Thanks for coming by...loads of stuff going on today. Thanks for reading and stay safe out there. It's crazy you know.
