There are fifteen days before the General Election here in the United States and we're still dealing with crazy. It's time for Sunday Morning Coffee my look at some of the political stories you've seen and some you may have missed. So let's drag the pot over, pour a cup and have some fun... Go!
Still Undecided
I saw a poll this weekend that said 12% of Americans were still "Undecided" when it came to Sec. Clinton or Mr. Trump. Seriously? So, are these the same folks who go to the grocery store and can't make a decision as to rutabaga or broccoli? (I know not at all the same but I just LOVE saying rutabaga out loud...don't you?) Why might you, or they, be undecided? Can't decide if you like women? Or maybe ya like women but never a woman in charge? Or you think groping women is cool but should only be done in the bar? Oh, no...wait! It's the email thingy right? Because a woman can't recall having an email exchange about her Blackberry it's a deal breaker? Are you freaking kidding me? You have the most experienced person EVER running for president against a self-absorbed reality TV show host and YOU can't make up your mind? Please pack your bags and head to Estonia or something. Yikes!
Justice David Souter
Here is something eerie for the Sunday before Halloween. Four years ago, in New Hampshire former Supreme Court Justice David Souter had some comments regarding the downfall of America. He said our nation would not be overthrown by a foreign enemy but by the sheer stupidity of our electorate. Here is that stunning video. Give it a chance you will be amazed at how prophetic Justice Souter was...or rather is.
That is what you get when we fail to teach civics to our kids. But, then again maybe that's what the GOP has in mind as they continue to cut education funding?
You want proof? Consider what has happened in North Carolina where the GOP controlled counties have slashed early voting times and reduced the number of polling places in predominately minority communities. The people are standing in line for hours...hours. But it all may backfire. Why? When you take away the right to vote the mere act of voting is an act of "civil disobedience" and folks in North Carolina are turning out in droves to shove it back in the face of their "masters". Gotta love it!
Somebody cue Roy Orbison...(Our Tim Lloyd is the best!) You know it's not enough to grope women. It's not enough to call women names. It's not enough to demean a woman and say they should be put in jail for making a health care decision with her family and physician. It's not enough to talk about "blood coming out of somewhere". Nope not enough. Now we have Mr. Trump calling Sec. Clinton a "dirty woman". I can not imagine any woman voting for this guy. Take a few moments and explain to me ladies why you think Mr. Trump is so wonderful. The comment section here is always open. I'm really wondering how in the world you think. It could be enlightening for all of us. (Cartoon - Tim Lloyd)
Chris Hagenow
If you can't run on your record...make one up. That is exactly what State Rep. Chris Hagenow (R-Windsor Heights) has done. This guy truly is as far-right as they come. That alone should disqualify him for public office. However, he is counting on the lack of civic intelligence among voters and outright lying to them in his television advertising. What is worse is that he lies about his opponent Jennifer Konfrst and nobody seems to have the guts to call him on it. Really? Those of you with his signs in your yard you just don't pay attention or...maybe it's because Jennifer is a woman? I don't know but Justice Souter once again comes to mind.
Death Threats - Twitter and Nazis
Here is a stunning bit of information that you may have missed. There is a committed group of white supremacists who have taken to Twitter in an effort to bully reporters who happen to be Jewish and/or are people of color. The racist language and threats of violence have gotten so bad that some are suggesting it may cause Twitter to implode. Twitter has responded that they are "monitoring" the situation however the company seems unable to deal with the threats. You don't believe me? Have a look at this story from the New York Times. Stunning, dreadful and, guess what, many are Trump supporters. Nice company you keep Chris Hagenow.
Yesterday was the birthday of Jerome Lester Horwitz (speaking of Jews). You might not have recognized that name but the face of the man who would become Curly Howard...everybody knows. One of my favorite of the Three Stooges Curly died way back in 1952 at the young age of 48. He was born in Brooklyn in 1903. Whoop, Whoop, Whoop!
Yesterday I attended a celebration of sorts for my granddaughter Taylor. She graduated from a White Belt to a Yellow Belt in Taekwondo at Farrell's in Waukee. I was really amazed at what they teach...not just the sport but the ethics and life lessons were great. So, here is to you "Taekwondo Tay"!
Thanks for reading and have a great week!
