With just over eight days until the General Election some folks are sighing "Let it be over..." Nah, come on where would we find anything to talk about? Welcome to Sunday Morning Coffee some of these stories you may have seen others, perhaps not. My goal is to offer you my progressive view on them and your job is simply to agree with me. Well...maybe. Grab a cup and let's get going!
So, on Friday, FBI Director James Comey wrote a letter to Congress saying his department is "examining newly unveiled emails that may be pertinent to the now closed investigation into the private server". What the hell does that mean? Well, nobody knows. Odd isn't it that days before the election out pops this new "information". Sources, immediately following the disclosure suggested that the emails had to do with former Congressman Anthony Weiner (R-NY). So now we're talking penises...again. This has got to be the most penis focused campaign in all of history. From "little hands" to Mr. Weiner. As my idol Rod Serling would say, "Welcome to the Twilight Zone."
But why take my word on this. Have a gander at the Newsweek article. Go on...you know you want the facts...or maybe not.
They Did What?
Last Thursday a jury in Oregon decided to acquit seven individuals charged by the government in the take over buildings on the Malhaur National Wildlife Refuge there. To be clear the seven defendants never said they didn't do the deed and their attorneys admitted that fact yet the jury sided with them and not the government. Uhm...more proof this is now the Twilight Zone? This decision has now focused new light on the growing right-wing militia movement in the United States. Once thought to be losing ground the "white rights" crowd has grown dramatically since the second term of President Obama. Just as in Congress, there are growing numbers of Americans who abhor the idea of an African-American as president, the Black Lives Matter movement and see anything the government does as an attack on their culture and liberties.
As our friend Tim Lloyd suggests...perhaps Black Folks need to start a militia movement. Wait...if I remember that didn't turn out too well either.
Story is that Ray Gun - The Greatest Store in the Universe has come out with a new t-shirt last week which calls out some pretty nasty women for their own Mt. Rushmore of sorts. The shirts released last week have the images of Sec. Clinton, Justice Ginsburg, Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D - Mass) and First Lady Michelle Obama.
I KNOW you want one so here is the link to Mt. Nasty and Ray Gun.
You are welcome!
Speaking of Nasty
When you fail to have a positive political record, or fail to show up to show up for public meetings there is only one thing you can do to win. Go personal, low and negative. That is exactly what State Representative Peter Cownie (R-West Des Moines) has done with his latest television ad against Claire Celsi. Policy? Nah. In typical, for this election season, Mr. Cownie has decided to troll Claire's Facebook Page for her, often, caustic opinions about folks who run counter to her belief in fairness and transparency. You see, Mr. Cownie really doesn't have a record to run on. In his time in office he has been a loyal member of the GOP Infantry voting against equality, against school funding, against the middle class, against mental health. So, what does Claire have to say about all of this? Here you go!
Frankly I'm proud to support Claire who once, by the way, posted that Gov. Terry Branstad was a "rat bastard". I like her...I really, really do! So, here is a link to her campaign site. Go and donate!
Not As Nasty - But You Wouldn't Know It
The Iowa House of Representatives has a mean bunch running for re-election. Perhaps they are emboldened by Donald Trump and think that attack ads, without merit, against their female challengers are the best way to fend off defeat. State Representative Chris Hagenow (R-Windsor Heights) is talking his play book TV ads directly from Trump World. Meanwhile his challenger Jennifer Konfrst retaliated with this...and we love it.
If you are so moved here is the link for her campaign site. Go...donate!
Last week was a good week as my brother and I sat down for a three hour chat about life, family and faith. It was a great bit of conversation and look forward to more.
I heard, just yesterday, that my friend Jeff Bratz of West Des Moines was found at his sisters home in Austin, TX unresponsive. I know nothing more than that but, if you have a mind to offer up prayers and positive energy please do so in his name. Thank you!
Thank you too for reading and have a great week.
