Each Sunday I get to step away from business and spend some time on politics. Why? Because it is so much fun! And, someday, when I grow up and don't give a damn about widows, orphans, the sick, the elderly, minorities and working people I will become a Republican. Welcome to Sunday Morning Coffee...we're just getting started.
The Press Conference
For those of us with a knowledge of history watching the recent Trump Press Conference recognized a hint of 1939. It is just like dictators to take off, "unhinged". Why? Because they are so deluded into thinking they are all powerful. In 1939 it was a little Bavarian with a funny mustache. In 2017 it is an orange millionaire who can not take responsibility for anything but is very comfortable in denouncing everybody else. On Friday we had a report out of Wall Street where the president of a firm there said of Trump, "I'd give him 30 days to get straightened out and stop this. Otherwise people are simply going to stop listening to him." Yeah, that from Wall Street. If you want some interesting reading as to the "18 WTF Moments" check this from Rolling Stone. But, come back...we need you.
Admit It: Donald Trump is Unfit to Serve as President
That is the headline in a number of national newspapers on Thursday and Friday following the wacky performance by Donald Trump at the news conference. Here is what else E.J. Dionne Jr. wrote: "Let’s not mumble or whisper about the central issue facing our country: What is this democratic nation to do when the man serving as president of the United States plainly has no business being president of the United States?" And he was just getting started. If you would like to read the piece in the Denver Post here you go.
As the chorus of reason continues to grow those of you who voted for Donald Trump are now feeling the bite of irrationality. The man you voted for because you believed he would make your life better by allowing a few crumbs to fall from the table of of the master is a fraud. But, we knew that. Despite Donald Trump's reputation as a brilliant entrepreneur and genius with merchandising, there is a long history of business failures with his name on them, including the Trump Shuttle, Trump magazine, Trump Mortgage, and, most recently, Trump University. And now he is failing a nation. (Cartoon - Tim Lloyd)
What? You Were Not Invited?
Last week after State Senator Charles Schneider (R-West Des Moines) voted to kick 180,000 working men and women from Iowa to the curb and gut a 43 year collective bargaining law there was a private signing of the bill into law by Terry Branstad. Not a bunch of fanfare when you're screwing your fellow Iowans. Here is a snap of a very proud lobbyist Drew Klein who, on his Twitter profile describes himself thus: "Christian. Proud Iowa Native. State Director @AFPIowa. Views expressed are my own. Helping the #ialegis build a better future for the Hawkeye state." The very first thing you need to be frighted by is the fact that Klein wraps himself in religion. That's usually a tip-off that he doesn't have a clue. It's just something to say to make you feel better about him...because maybe you can relate? But, I digress. Who does Drew Klein work for? Ever heard of Americans for Prosperity which is funded by our friends the Koch Brothers. The same guys who fund the American Legislative Exchange Council or ALEC the group where Charles Schneider and the Iowa GOP lawmakers get their marching orders.
Yep...looking out for your best interests. I'm calling BS. Elections have consequences.
Maybe Now?
The Iowa Democratic Party is in shambles. Mostly because of failed leadership directed by folks who have more in common with the rich and powerful than workers like you and me. Oh sure, we'll go to their fancy donor parties in their fancy homes and they will offer us some wine and cheese, pat us on the head and smile as we give them $25 for "The Party". Their party. You want to know why the Iowa GOP is in control of...everything? Because the leadership of the Iowa Democratic Party failed. And, it doesn't matter to them. They can jet off to vacation following the election and check back when it's time for another fund-raiser. Maybe now those of you who call yourselves Democrats will get some spine and call for an end of this brood of self-serving plutocrats. Everything they have touched in the past 10 years has turned to crap.
Oh, and I get to go to a Polk County Democratic Party meeting tomorrow evening. That should be nice.
Speaking of Nice
Expect much of that to go away when it comes to the Polk Country Democrats. There have been, at least, two powerful meetings with dozens of angry, pissed off party workers who are demanding and end to "Iowa Nice". A communications committee was established and one of the topics...I kid you not...was "becoming more mean" when it comes to our efforts to call crap...shit. I think that will sit well with my friends who work for a living. Not so much for the gilded. We shall see.
Last Sunday I got to go to a birthday party for our granddaughter Taylor. She is eight. I don't know if you remember what it was like...being eight. I sort of do. Life, for Taylor, is full of fun and adventure and love. Disappointments are few and when they do come it's usually something that can be resolved in short order. Oh if only all children could experience that. I am grateful Taylor is smart and pretty and outgoing and happy. And, because I'm not yet a Republican...I would wish the same for your grandchildren.
Thanks for reading and have a great week!
Democrats under Gronstahl were "nice." Missed that.
