Tomorrow is Income Tax Day! If you are a wealthy American you celebrate big time because your dear leader worked up a tax plan that will save you tons. Meanwhile the working stiffs of this nation will shoulder the burden as we always have. The wealthy don't serve in the military the wealthy escape the courts and now the wealthy escape paying taxes. Welcome to Sunday Morning Coffee...not a good way to start huh?
Cory Booker & Facebook
Yesterday Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ) staged an event called the Hometown Kickoff and the Justice For All Tour in Newark. I was able to watch most of the Facebook Livestream when it worked. That had to have been frustrating for the campaign. Sometimes technology isn't up to the task. But, beyond the technical issues Sen. Booker hit on all the right issues...every one. And, when he quoted from Dr. Martin Luther King's Letter from a Birmingham Jail - which was penned exactly 56 years ago to the day - it was frosting on the cake. He did himself well.If you have the time and interest, here is a link to watch the speech.
Last week I challenged my religious friends to uphold their distaste for collective bargaining and for businesses to pay a livable wage as outlined in the religious doctrine of the Methodist Church, the Catholic Church and the Southern Baptist Church. Crickets. No, actually worse than crickets...at least they "chirp". Stone cold silence from my "conservative" friends. Face it. The reason you uphold a position that fails to pay a living wage and fails to allow unions to form and to negotiate wages, benefits, quality of work is because your greed gets in the way of your self-proclaimed faith. Today is Palm Sunday...don't forget to pray for your sorry ass.
Ouch...feelin' it today!
Julian Castro
The former San Antonio mayor and Secretary of Housing and Urban Development under President Obama will be in Des Moines tomorrow and hosted by the very impressive Asian Latino Coalition at the Machinist Hall, 2000 Walker St., Des Moines. The event is open to Asian Latino Coalition members, invited guests and Democrats. I also watched every minute of Secretary Castro's presidential announcement which he peppered with Spanish and it was electric. Goin'? Yep. And, why not? We get to live in Iowa and this stuff happens all the time. When I was in New York last week and telling folks about the parade of candidates that are coming here and how it's possible to sit down and have a conversation with them they were awestruck. Take advantage of the opportunity.
The current occupant and his minions are doing their best to hide the tax returns of their dear leader. Except the law (if that matters anymore) is on the side of Congress. Clearly the law passed in 1924 which gives congress the authority to request tax returns is...law. Meanwhile the "scare' is in. "Why, if congress can get the tax returns of the president then they can get the tax returns of any citizen and use that against them." Ahhhh...well, if you are doing something illegal... If you want a primmer on how congress got the power to request tax returns here is that background. I know...facts...right? So damn bothersome.
Partly Personal
What? Done already? Yep. My grand-daughter is catching for her softball team at 10 so, gotta go! And....I was up late last night watching Goodfellas, something my Bride disliked saying it was "stupid" and didn't get up to feed the chickens until 7am. See all the stuff you just learned about?
If you are celebrating, and you should, Passover starts this week at sundown on Friday, which is also Shabbat. Yikes. I'll be in Mason City conducting the Community Seder there at Adas Israel. If you are in the area you might want to come...promise it will be an educational evening and the food is outstanding. Here is a link to the Adas Israel Blog.
Have a great Sunday and remember, my "conservative" friends...Pray...really hard. You need it.
