Hey folks...welcome to the "Vacation Edition" of Sunday Morning Coffee. So much to share with you about politics and religion but no time today. Why? My Bride has me taking some time off and visiting some of our very dear friends on Anna Maria Island. We're on the trip she saves for each year and I am grateful. If you've never been here it is simply the best. Sort of like Windsor Heights, Iowa (Speed Limit 25 mph) but no speed cameras. Everything here is on "Island Time" so that's what Sunday Morning Coffee is like today. Just a couple of stories.
The Sun Rises
We were up this morning before 5:30am Eastern to head to the Rod & Reel Pier to watch the sun come up. It truly is breathtaking. This old pier juts out into the bay and folks gather to start fishing well before 6am. Very, very cool.
Right to Work State
Florida is another anti-worker state. I was visiting with a guy who was fishing this morning off the pier. It's something that I notice about proud union members. They seem to always start the conversation about their work with, "I'm a union sheet metal worker..." or "I'm a union electrician..." and so on.
My new friend, Bob, is from Chicago and a "Union sheet metal worker" who followed in his father's footsteps. His dad, he said, was on the crew for the Sears Tower. He worked on Navy Pier. Said he came to Florida to care for his aging father and wanted to transfer here but because this is a "right to steal state" the pay, he said, "sucked" so he retired early but his pension and what he received from his father's estate keeps him in good.
"Ya know, if people realized that being in the union is great for them and for this country we would have a much better economy and life. But, people just don't get it and they have been brainwashed into thinking unions are bad and that's just bullshit."
He's right.
Look Who's Visiting
Last night we were out and how surprised we were to see who is visiting! And, from Indiana at that! Perhaps it is true that Vice President Pence has a direct line and that's why he hates LGBTQI, Planned Parenthood, Social Security and any number of issues that espouse his particular form of Christianity.
I didn't get the shot because the lady who was driving the vehicle came out of K-Mart saying, "Don't you love it? I'm riding every day with God and on the front of my car I've got a bumper sticker for our president who is the most God-like person I know."
No...I didn't say anything. Florida, as you know, is a "Stand Your Ground" state and no doubt she was packing more than coupons in her oversize bag.
Partly Personal
Sorry for the brief edition this week. Stuff going on here you know. Pleased to see Steve Bullock in the race. Met him this winter just after we got hit with inches of snow. He was at the John and Jacki Norris home. There as well was Attorney General of Iowa, Tom Miller who, last week, became the first state-wide elected official to endorse a 2020 presidential candidate. Bullock did some amazing things in Montana even though he had a very "Red" legislature.
Thanks for reading and have a wonderful Sunday!
