Hello and welcome back to Sunday Morning Coffee the personal and the political blog that I get to write early each Sunday Morning. Here you'll find some news stories you've seen or, perhaps, missed along with my commentary. So, let's go and remember don't spill!

PORK!

I wonder what drives the trolls to post on a Facebook Page where they know the author is a liberal. The drive to argue? To show some superior nature? To feed their bully ego? I dunno but if you follow my page you've seen them. I don't make it a point to follow and then post my opinions on their pages which are riddled with falsehoods and conspiracy theories. Why do they? But when things get out of hand I move to the "Block Button". I've had to do that more and more lately as the attacks on my friends and family become more intense.

But...back to PORK! One of the constants from the those who pay homage to the Republican Party. When the American Rescue Plan was signed into law by President Biden they came and decried "Pork!" or "If Americans really knew what was in that Bill they would be ashamed!"

Of course nobody can back up their assertions because there is no defense. It's simply the talking points they have been told to utter, driven by their cadre of talking heads that spew garbage. You know...it's true.

The American Rescue Plan (ARP)

Many folks are laser focused on the $1,400 stimulus checks being sent out this weekend. Even as early as Friday we fielded reports that money was already being deposited into accounts. But, what else is in the Act that may be overlooked?  How about COBRA payments. For many Americans who have lost their job, and their health insurance, have the choice to enroll in the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1985 (COBRA). The problem is that if you've lost your job COBRA is just too damn expensive. So families opt out and go without. Tucked into the ARP is a provision that the government will cover your COBRA payments at 100% through September of this year.  Pork? Hardly. (Image: Getty Images from CBS News)

If you have children the Feds will send you $250 per child for kids between the age of 6 and 17. Those benefits could be coming soon and Democrats are pushing to make this Child Tax Credit...permanent.  It is said this, alone, will lift millions of children out of poverty and cut child poverty by 50%.

There is also the impact on taxing forgiven student loans. Until the ARP if your student loan was forgiven (good luck) you would have to pay taxes on that amount based on your tax bracket. Now that is not in place and so if your student loan is forgiven you will owe zero in taxes.

How about unemployment insurance benefits? Under the ARP unemployment benefits that you may receive is non-taxable up to $10,200. That is huge. Many families were not aware that their unemployment benefits were taxable and they will receive a surprise tax bill. Now that threat of families hit with another unexpected bill get a benefit. But, remember this is only for Federal Taxes your state may be taxing unemployment payments so beware.

And how about the $5 billion in the bill that will go to socially disadvantaged farmers of color? This is for farmers who are Black, Hispanic, Native American or Asian. There is $4 billion that will cover up to 120% of outstanding debt and another $1 billion designed for outreach, training, education, technical assistance and grants.  Yeah....so there is that!

And then there are the billions of dollars flowing to local schools so they can reopen. Billions of dollars being spent on ramping up vaccine and vaccine distribution sites.  Pork?  Hardly. What a difference an election makes!

Meanwhile in Kentucky

The Republican controlled legislature there just passed legislation that would strip the governor (who happens to be a Democrat) from being able to appoint a U.S. Senator should one of the two offices become empty. That has fueled speculation that Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) or Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) may be ill and unable to fill their terms.  However both, this past week, stated they are fine and moving forward. But...still.... It seems "Revenge Politics" are a staple in places across the nation where the GOP are in control of statehouses.

George Floyd

Meanwhile the family of murdered George Floyd just settled with the City of Minneapolis for $27 million. That isn't "chump change" and represents a huge settlement and pay pave the way for other cases to move forward. Hit 'em where it hurts. But, of course cities, counties and states will simply pay their legal bills and their fines with your tax dollars. So, who the hell cares...right?

They Are Very Afraid

Republican controlled legislatures across the county are passing all sorts of measures to reduce your opportunity to vote. Voter suppression is top of mind awareness for the GOP. In Georgia alone the legislature is taking a direct attack on Black voters there and doing away with Sunday voting. For those of you unaware the Black Community, for a very long time, has pushed something called "Souls to the  Polls" where people, following Sunday Church march to polling places to cast their vote.  Now that is in jeopardy. Georgia is also making it a crime to deliver water to people standing in line to vote in person. What kind of bullshit is that?  It is driven by fear. Republicans know that when people vote...they are in serious trouble.

Meanwhile here in Iowa the legislature passed and Gov. Kim Reynolds (R-IA) signed into law a major voter restriction act. Of course it is going to court as LULAC countered with a suit. I wonder if Attorney General Tom Miller (D-IA) is going to defend the state?  Anybody know?

Asian Attacks

Remember when "45" began his awful attacks on Muslims? His lemmings followed up with attacks and even murder. Now attacks on Asian Americans are on the rise...up by over 150% last year. In his national address on Thursday President Biden said it was unacceptable and said it "must stop" and has directed the Department of Justice to prioritize convictions. What sort of animals are out there...weary.

Children and the Border

On Saturday President Biden said he would deploy FEMA to care for minors crossing border. What's going on?  Thousands of children, some with but most without, are crossing the U.S. Southern Border. It's the result of repressive economics, politics and a failure of their home country to deal with COVID19. One of my "right wing trolls" delighted in posting (and calling on me to respond) an NBC News story about how Border Patrol, the Health & Human Services Department are struggling to take in these kids and placing them in temporary detention centers. Of course he only reads the headline, which is typical of these folks. Reading seems to be something that escapes them. The reality is that the U.S. is working at a fever pitch to unite these kids with relatives in places like California, Texas, Washington D.C. and other locations. Often paying for flights. But it is complicated. Many family members are here without documentation and the Biden Administration is also confronting issues of social distancing. However the places where the kids are being moved are not the cold stone and wire cages of the  prior administration. The government is setting up tent cities on government land and in those tents are teachers, nurses, social workers, games, and a clean safe place to wait. So...please. (Image: WBUR)

Partly Personal

The birthday of our son, Aaron is this week. We, in past years, made our way to the Urban Grill for lunch. Looks like not quite yet. You see, Polk County, Iowa is a Vaccine Desert. People have been traveling long distances from here to get their vaccine. Me? Nothing yet. I'm told that "maybe next week or the week after".  

This is also the week that marks the First Day of Spring which is 20 March. That is also the date of my Mother's z"tl death some six years ago at the age of 93 and seven months. I remember it so well....and may her memory be a blessing.

Finally I fully expect to see Polk County Attorney, John Sarcone (D-Polk County, Iowa) to be in a primary if he decides to run for re-election. This is the prosecutor who tried Des Moines Register Reporter who was pepper sprayed and arrested during a demonstration that turned ugly. The reporter, Andrea Sahouri, identified herself as press but that didn't stop Des Moines Police Officer, Luke Wilson from arresting her testifying that she resisted arrest. Wilson failed to activate his body camera and failed to report the incident to his superiors. A violation of department policy. Yet, on flimsy evidence Sarcone pushed ahead and Iowa made, once again, national and news. Yet more embarrassment. Names have already been floating around to primary Sarcone, should he decide to run, who has held that position since 1991.

Sunday Morning Coffee 21 February 2021

This morning it's 47 degrees warmer than last Monday...so there is...that. Welcome to Sunday Morning Coffee my weekly look at the politics you may have seen, or missed, all laced with my commentary. It's what I get to start writing long before the sun comes up...and at 27 degrees...who's complaining?  Let's go!

They Really Don't Care...

It was both funny and sad. When Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) decided to abandon his duty and jet off to Mexico for a vacation, lied about why he went and then returned all "sorry and stuff" it was yet another reality check on what/who the Republican Party....is. They really don't care for you or the issues you are facing. They flat-out do not care. They don't give a damn about health care or the pandemic or struggling families. Nah, can't be bothered. It's sad that so many people still think the GOP is a party that has some sense of duty. Of course they don't keep up and are stuck thinking that somebody like Regan is in charge.  Nope...that boat has sailed...directly to Cancun.

Texas Should Secede

Not long ago the proud citizens of Texas had enough of a Black President and there were rumblings of secession going around. After all, they thought, the state had a large enough economy and "going it alone" is sort of baked into their DNA.  If you want proof of that all you need do is look the the latest man-made calamity that engulfed the Lone Star State. In 2008 power disruptions that left thousands in the dark. 2011 another cold snap that sent millions seeking shelter as the power grid, once again, failed. The federal government, thinking that they might find some responsible Texans in the GOP controlled...everything...issued some "recommendations" about winterizing their power structure.

True  to form Texas told the feds to buzz off. They knew better because, hey...they are Texans. So they doubled down and retained their proud heritage of ignoring science.  And they proudly held up the fact that Texas is the only state in the nation to not share a power grid with other states. "Take that you snowflakes!"

And then, last week the snowflakes...fell and Texas froze. Governor Greg Abbott (R-TX) was quick to point fingers at the very commission that he appoints and said the problem really lies with Rep. Alexandra Ocasio-Cortex (D-NY). You see, you don't have to be very smart to be governor of Texas...you just need somebody to blame.  Weary....

Got Popcorn?

The legal issues for the former president are starting to pile up. Investigations from New York to Georgia are happening. There is a lawsuit citing "45" with inciting an insurrection that has been filed by the NAACP and Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-MS). Which is really fun because the base of the lawsuit is what is called the Ku Klux Klan Act.  Anyway...should be a great show.

Come On Joe - Get It Together

It looks like Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) is going to oppose President Biden's choice, Neera Tanden, to become the next head of the Office of Management and Budget. This is the same guy who said he opposed the $1.9 trillion Save America proposal because it was too costly. This really isn't about anything else but the survival of the political future of Joe Manchin.  Biden was able to beat some sense into Joe and he backed off his opposition to the Save America proposal but, because of some tweets, he is opposing the Tanden nomination. My bet is that it's political and the White House said, "Look Joe, get behind the Stimulus/COVID19 proposal and we'll let you dump on Neera." Anybody with me on that?

Just Like Mississippi Only Colder

As Iowa continues it's march to out Mississippi itself when it comes to educational attainment, family support, gun laws, abortion, LGBTQ issues, tax law and school vouchers. I could go on...but I need to get to my point. The state legislature and its governor are directly opposing the organized business community.

Let me make my point.

Let's start with the Iowa Association of Business and Industry. Their top legislative priority is: "ABI supports legislative efforts to recruit, retrain and retain talent in the state." Now, that sounds like a cool idea but what the hell is the Iowa Legislature doing to foster that climate? Oh...let's see: 

• Restrict Voting - Republicans hate it when you vote so let's screw down the process and say it is because of "voter fraud";
• School Vouchers - Let's take fund away from public schools and allow parents to pull their kids and spend state tax dollars on Catholic, Lutheran and Islamic religious schools. Oh, wait...strike that Islamic reference;
• Punish Public Schools - If the school district ignores science and opens up for all in-person education you get cash...if you don't you get punished;
• Underfund Education - This has been an ongoing problem for years and years and it's why we're losing teachers at an astonishing rate;
• Sideline Gender Identification - Nothing says "Welcome" better than bashing young people who have a gender ID different than their birth certificate. It makes our schools...safer. That should open up workforce opportunities for sure;
• Deny Choice - Look, we all understand that men know better when it comes to reproductive choice...ask them;
• Glock Love - Nothing says strength and safety more than making sure all employees are fully armed;
• Right to Be Poor - Well, this is one thing business groups really do love. The Right to Work laws that keep "The Man" in control and the worker begging for crumbs;
• Protect Intimidation - When it comes to the police make sure that they are allowed to beat and arrest as many folks of color as possible and then send them to prison so they can make furniture for the state at slave wages;
• Ignore Science - "Masks? We don't need no stinkin' masks!" Come on to the Legislature and breath on us and while you're at it please disregard that Iowa ranks last in the nation in vaccine distribution. That will impress future talent.

I know, I'm missing a few...feel free to fill in the blanks.  One of the reasons I'm even in Iowa is because of the, once, outstanding educational system the state enjoyed back in the day.  Today, my brother (the retired doctor) who has been teaching in several colleges in the Des Moines Metro, tells me that a vast majority of his students find it difficult to read, do simple math and actually string a  set of sentences into a coherent paragraph. 

Y'all is doin' a great job. Git 'er done boyz!

An Issue That Wins Back Rural Iowa

Meanwhile I was on a call last week with the Democratic Leadership of the Third Congressional District and I was struck at what brave people are doing to salvage any hope of a better life for Rural Iowans. Let's face it, the GOP has a strangle hold on rural counties. They maintain that hold using fear. Spreading lies about "illegal's" taking jobs. That only lazy people get government help. (Meanwhile 33% of the record farm income in 2020 was due to government support.) And so on...  So, what issue can win back these folks?

How about the School Voucher program?  Just like rural hospitals (which are also in trouble) public schools in these rural counties are large employers and serve as a real connection point for the population . From sports to academics rural schools are a critical bridge between parents and grandparents. But, now the Iowa Legislature wishes to siphon dollars away and give public funds to private schools. And, at last check, their ain't many private religious schools in Adar County...to name just one.

Partly Personal

Last night, after the Sabbath, my brother and I were on the phone talking about memories and synagogues. I guess it's what old Jewish men do. We were discussing the many, many synagogues that we'd visited over the years. Whenever he, or I, traveled for business (or pleasure) we both would seek out the local synagogue and attend either Friday night services or Shabbat services on Saturday morning. What a travelogue of experiences. I'm not going to list them all but such fond memories I have of the shul in Regina and Toronto. The orthodox shul in Nashville, Sherith Israel, (image) where I was so lucky to hear (and share several L'Chaim's after services) with the great Rabbi Zalman Posner z"l. The congregation in Little Rock where they were so welcoming. The shuls in St. Louis and in Kansas City and in Phoenix and of course those in Israel. I'm leaving out many.

Meanwhile my brother spoke about his shul in Odessa, Texas where he ran into Elliott Gould. His parents were patients of his. He spoke about the great teachers he has met in the U.S. and in Israel.

It was a fascinating conversation that stretched nearly two hours. The bottom line is how fortunate we are to have, and continue to have, this rich experience of learning and connection to a faith that is so diverse, enlightened and so full of life. Oh, and the people we've met along the way.  Yeah...that was cool.

Oh, one other thing. My bride bought a...truck.  Don't ask....but it is really cool as well.

Where do you start? It has been a week like no other and that from a person who has been active in protests for decades. Welcome to Sunday Morning Coffee. Sit back and enjoy the ramblings of a (just like you) socialist. More on that later.

No Surprise

For those of you who are "shocked" by the white terrorists who descended on the United States Capital last week I have one question: Why? You didn't see this coming? For years "45" and his enablers have been fomenting this very action. The Republican Party the people who voted for him and those who carried his water knew exactly what he was...and is...a "Mob Boss Thug" who will say and do anything including a inciting what played out in Washington D.C. and what is still being planned ahead of the inauguration. Now is the time when these criminals must be shown the door. We can start with Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO). When are you good people going to grow a spine?

Arrests

Meanwhile the FBI is busy rounding up the assholes who took part in the riot. Thanks to the many photo journalists who were on the ground taking images of the insurrection it's pretty easy picking. Like the grinning idiot who paused for a photo as he walked away with Speaker Nancy Pelosi's lectern. Who happens to be a father of five and the husband of a Tampa Bay physician. Rot in jail. Or the guy from Iowa who chased a, black, capital policeman up the steps of the Capital.  In jail. Now, what must be done is make sure we get as many as we can. This can not stand. If we don't take care of this now...we will lose.  Even our allies are watching and hoping we survive. Justice my friends...justice.(Photo: Getty Images)

Officer Brian Sicknick

Details and new video has now come out that detail the death of Capital Police Officer Brian Sicknick who was bludgeoned to death by the white nationalists who stormed the Capital. The new video shows these scum beating and then dragging Sicknick face down...down the stairs. No, I'm not going to share that video...you can find it yourself however here is a still shot. Oh yes, there were some "very fine people" there.  How do you feel about that you "law and order" folks? 

She Has No Soul

Meanwhile, here in Iowa, Gov. Kim Reynolds (R-IA), the day after the insurrection, said she condemned the violence but (and this is important) said she was "troubled" by the "lack of transparency in our election process". You know what she is doing...right?  She is still on the train and still carrying water for "45". And in just days the Iowa Legislature will convene and you who are elected will bow down to this person while many of you will continue to chip away at the rights of working families with even more draconian laws. If I were in the legislature I would simply ignore this woman. She is a danger to our state. 

Our Original Sin

While you clutch your pearls in horror let's visit the filth of our "Original Sin" and something you seem unable to see. White people, unable or unwilling to do the work, purchased other humans, put them in chains and traded them as if they were cattle. It is called slavery. Meanwhile do to "Manifest Destiny" the United States drove the indigenous people from their homes and into "reservations" claiming that G-d had ordained the action because, of course, white people are superior. You don't believe me...look it up. Maybe now is the time to talk about reoperations. I'll start. Let us begin by paying every black adult and every Native American adult in the United States $2,000 a month. The "white folk"? We'll offer you three-fifths or $1,200 if your income is below $400,000 a year.  Three-fifths was "right" two hundred years ago...seems it would be OK now. 

Evil in Nebraska

Isn't this special...  Gov. Pete Ricketts (R-NE), who BTW is the son of the founder of TD Ameritrade so the silver spoon ain't far from the table, has said that "illegal immigrants" in his state would not receive the COVID vaccine so that it would be available to "legal citizens of Nebraska". Remember many of these immigrants are responsible for the food that you buy and it was "45" who ordered these "essential workers" to get back to work. Looks like they are only "essential" when we want them to be. What might happen, my friends, if they all decided to take two weeks off?  A general strike. Never mind...enjoy your fried chicken.

Pay Up Sidney

Meanwhile the lawyer Sidney Powell who was out there spreading baseless conspiracy theories about the "rigged vote" just got slapped with a $1.3 billion defamation lawsuit brought by Dominion Voting Systems. If you remember she said that votes were "changed" from "45" to Joe Biden and that the voting system had strange ties to Hugo Chavez the strongman of Venezuela who, by the way, died in 2013. Uhm...nope. Here is what part of the lawsuit says, "Far from being created in Venezuela to rig elections for a now-deceased Venezuelan dictator, Dominion was founded in Toronto for the purpose of creating a fully auditable paper-based vote system that would empower people with disabilities to vote independently on verifiable paper ballots.” Pay up Sidney...there is a price for being stupid. Partly Personal

On Friday afternoon I got a call from my friend Peter Children of Mason City. I get to visit with Peter several times a week about business. He is 85 and works Universal Products every day. But, on Friday it was different. He was worried. He told me he had been blacking out several times a day and that the batteries in his pacemaker we weak.  As we talked he told me he had an appointment to get new batteries installed on Tuesday of this week.  Tuesday! I did something I rarely do...I shouted at him that he must, must, get himself to the hospital right away and get this done. "Hell, Peter, you could be dead before Tuesday!" He took that advice, checked into to Mercy Hospital and within hours got not only new batteries but a new device. I spoke with him again this morning and he is feeling fine and back to talking about...business. Yeah...it was a pretty good week.

Sunday Morning Coffee 27 December 2020

This is the last Sunday Morning Coffee for 2020. That, perhaps, is a good thing. I've been writing this piece for well over twelve years and while I've shared a bunch of stuff this year has been tough for so many reasons. Most of all the utter failure of people we elect to lead and keep us safe has been depressing and embarrassing. Let's go and hope 2021 is better. 

Failure = Death

Over 300,000 Americans have now died due to COVID19. Daily death tolls are larger than what we saw on 9/11 yet the lack of caring, much less leadership, is astounding. This president only thinks of himself and he, and his enablers, have decided that is OK. By whose book is that OK?  And now, because of that same failure millions of Americans are going to face growing poverty and the nation will grind to a halt on Tuesday. Disgusting and vile. Do not talk to me about "moving on". I can not wait until this evil is gone and states take up the challenge to "lock him up".

Meanwhile

The difference between what we've had to suffer through for the past four years and what the promise of a Biden Presidency is offering is palatable. Mostly ignoring the antics of "45" and his followers Joe Biden and Kamala Harris continue to work on the serious business of leading this nation back. Putting serious people in charge of key positions and making sure those folks mirror America. It is astounding and welcome and gives us hope.

Nashville Bombing

I dunno. But, I do know that IF the person who committed this crime were a "person of color" or from a religion other than "Christian" we would be quick to call it an act of terrorism. Still shifting this one out but conspiracy theories are working overtime on both sides of the political/cultural divide.

Twitter Profiles

I spend a bit of time on Twitter for personal and professional reasons and it's always entertaining and, at the same time, confusing, to view the Twitter profiles of people who offer their rabid support of "45" and buy into the conspiracy that the election was "stolen". Sure, I read some of the posts and then love to click on those profiles and to a person they identify themselves as a devout "Christian" or "Follower of Jesus" or "Saved by His Grace". Really?  You wouldn't have a clue what it means to be a "Follower of Jesus" because if you were confronted by who/what he really was you would delete the reference. It's a cover used to give a "secret handshake" to others who are xenophobic sociopaths. I can understand why so many people are turned off by religion but enjoy spending an hour a week at a "show" rather than truly understanding what their faith requires of them.  Weary...

Had enough yet?  I'll just leave it there and oh my are the Democrats lining up to take her on in 2022.

Rural Iowa Politics

Last week I had the opportunity to talk business and Rural America with a sprinkling of politics and how Democrats need to start listening rather than telling folks we have all the answers. Why? Because our answers, often, are not the answer to the issues that come from living in rural parts of our nation. For example, consider that families living in 24 of Iowa's 99 counties are living below the federal poverty line of $26,200 a year for a family of four. This is not about politics it is about economics. It is also about racial and social issues that have many living in Rural America frightened because their "way of life" is being threatened. Right or wrong...that seems to be the crux of many voiced concerns.  But there is hope and here is a link to just one of many conversations I've had over the past week. This is the non-political piece...because Insight on Business the News Hour stays away from the political fray...however the trends do make for an interesting bit of conversation.

Partly Personal

What a weird Christmas. While millions of Americans traveled for the holiday we...didn't. Our goal is to buy as much time as possible so that we can get back to the holidays in 2022. Time is what each of us needs to survive. And, no matter what you think of yourself think also of those around you.  Deal?

i'm stressing out a bit.  For over a year I've known that my 12 year-old computer is on the edge but, not being able to just go out and buy something new, I've had to save up for the switch. Today may be that day but I am supper stressed that not everything that is important is going to make the transition. Sure I've backed up files and photos but...my email system is awful and I can only access it through this computer. (You see, I don't have "the guy" who is in an office down the hall that knows all about this stuff.) And, yes, I have long ago forgotten what my password is which is why I have not been able to access email via my phone. Yeah...I'm a bit stressed and hope that my guru, Patrick Palmer, can make it all better.

It's the week of Christmas and may those of you celebrating have a meaningful event. Welcome to Sunday Morning Coffee my weekly look at the political (and sometimes religious) news stories out there and offer my own, usually acerbic, commentary. Hey, it's what I get to do long before the sun comes up.  Let's go!

Bye Mike

Last week, in the first official word from the U.S. Government Secretary of State Mike Pompeo put the blame of the massive security breach squarely on Russian hackers and orchestrated by that government. Then along comes "45" and says, nope..."China!". In a classic move the president, who prefers Twitter to actually having a policy wrote:  “The Cyber Hack is far greater in the Fake News Media than in actuality. I have been fully briefed and everything is well under control,”. He also claimed the media are “petrified” of “discussing the possibility that it may be China (it may!).” Expect Mike to be packing his bags and joining the massively incompetent Attorney General William Barr as the revolving door continues to spin. Money, Money, Money, Money...

If we can believe what we are hearing from the U.S Senate it looks like we're on track for an agreement on yet another stimulus roll out. As of this morning the final stamp is being put on a $900 billion package that will include an additional $300 in weekly unemployment benefits, funding for schools, small businesses, health care workers and another round of stimulus checks. Out of the deal is money for state and local governments and liability protections for businesses and other entities operating during the pandemic. What may have moved the ball is that last week the U.S. added yet another 885,000 new requests for unemployment benefits. That is up by 23,000 over the prior week and a clear sign that the economy is in rough shape.  Money in the hands of people who will actually spend it, rather than buy stock, moves the economy forward. It ain't that hard to figure out.

Careful What You Name It

It looks like "Operation Warp Speed" hit a speed bump. Seems that states are getting a fraction of the number of Pfizer vaccine vials they were first promised. There was lots of finger pointing going on including Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D-MI) who has a Pfizer production plant in her backyard but was shorted about 40% of what was promised. After several days of "Whack-a-Mole" we learned, on Saturday, that, well, we goofed.  General Gustave Perna, chief operating officer of Operation Warp Speed, apologized for a "planning error" that caused dozens of states to expect more vaccine doses than they'll actually get. He took full blame and said he is fixing it. Meanwhile the Moderna vaccine has been approved by the FDA and it, unlike the Pfizer model, can be shipped and stored at temperatures much less than the -75 degrees celsius...which should be much better news for rural areas of the country.

Careful What You Name It II

Just so you feel better Vice President Mike Pence last week rolled out the answer to a question that nobody has been asking. We now know that the couple of dozen people who are the United States Space Force will be called "Guardians". Isn't that nice and don't you feel so much more, well, protected?  For the record, you might wonder what the duty of the Guardians might be so, here you go: "Provide freedom of operation for the United States in, from, and to space. Provide prompt and sustained space operations." Sort of like NASA and the Air Force but hey...we needed more drama in 2020.

More Help for Georgia

In case you had not heard "45" is headed back to Georgia to help the two crooks running for re-election there. Birds of a feather I suspect. If it's like the last time he will give the candidates a couple of minutes to state their case and then rail against the election, the media other members of the GOP...you know the drill.

Iowa Will Remain Red...Forever

Not to scare the hell out of you but in talking with several folks this past week, who are connected Democrats, I'm being told that Iowa will remain firmly in the GOP fold for decades to come. The conversation centered on the miserable job Gov. Kim Reynolds (R-IA) is doing here. Favorite under the desk deals for cronies, the mishandling of the COVID19 response, her continued attack on collective bargaining all get a "I don't care" response from Independents, Republicans and even a few Democrats. "People like her because, just like many of them, she reflects their inability to understand the role of government and voters have been told for decades, in Iowa, that government is bad and we just need to do the right thing as individuals."

While two or three counties in Iowa will remain Democratic strongholds that ain't playin' in the rest of the state. And, when you figure that, even in Polk County, we lost two Democrat seats in the House.  Ouch. "I really don't see any person being able to take on Reynolds and win much less Grassley. Stick a fork in it...or maybe move."  Looks like we might need the Guardians.

What Will Win?

The Democrats are, right now, working on plans and policies aimed at Rural Voters. No, not kidding. We've really got to have a better policy brief other than, "You folks are dumb shits." That never plays well. Here's something that you might not realize. There are, right now 24 counties in Iowa where the majority of folks are living below the federal poverty line of $26,200 for a family of four. Let that sink in. And, if you are counting we don't have that many urban counties so...it's not that we city folk are all causing so much economic pain. Nope the win-win is in a number of economic efforts that we can and should be talking about. Want a quick list:

• High-Speed Internet - Look, I've been on this for well over a decade. This can be a game changer for everything from entrepreneurs who live in rural Iowa but do business on a global scale to hospitals and schools that are, often, the backbone of our small communities. In addition we're seeing remote work as a big win for people and corporations. You don't have to shell out $4,000 a month for a studio apartment in San Francisco to work in Silicon Valley. Ask the folks in Jefferson, Iowa. 
• Food Security Measures - We've all heard that, "Iowa feeds the world..." But, it seems that we can't feed ourselves correctly. Fast, cheap food from the local convenience store only increases obesity and health problems associated with a lousy diet. We can do better;
• Life Skills Education - Oh yeah....we're hot on STEM but can you balance a check-book or understand the economics of money? How about learning how to actually cook something rather than heat it up in the microwave? (See point two above.) I think we can educate folks on both life skills and stuff like science, technology, engineering and math.  Ya think?
• Reimagine Crumbling Infrastructure - We should have a "Marshall Plan" to rescue our small towns that are crumbling along with the roads and bridges that connect them. This is going to take money and more then lip service. Think of how we can be helpful rather than hurtful. Having lived in Rural Iowa I can tell you there is a solid quality of life there...but you've got to have access and infrastructure for it to be successful.
• Embrace Small Faming - I've lived on what once called a "diversified farm". There was a time the only reason we would go to the grocery store was to buy a box of Fruit Loops. Not kidding. I'm not suggesting that we get back to "Green Acres" but our current agricultural policy is "big is better". Think of that for a moment. The farmer needs to get bigger and bigger so that he/she can beg massive agricultural corporations to offer pennies on the dollar when it comes to commodities. Who is getting wealthy here? It ain't the farmer. And what is being produced from the commodities is, once again, high calorie/low nutritional value products. There is a market for good food but these farmers need a lane in which to sell it.  The road-side stand doesn't cut it...we need transportation answers and market stability measures for small diversified farmers".

Partly Personal

This would have been the weekend when our home would be buzzing with activity. Family and friends would pour in from several states and we would celebrate the holidays with massive food events, tell stories, share some wine (and booze) and catch up on our lives. Not this year. We, like so many other families, have made the decision to avoid the crowded space. The safety of others is, frankly, more important than having a two day party. Will it work? I hope so. You see, now that we're seeing vaccines roll out...our job is to buy time. We do that by staying out of harms way refusing to "roll the dice" and by doing that slow the spread and get the time we need to create a solid holiday gathering in 2022.

Be Afraid, Be Very Afraid

Following the Democratic National Convention the president as asked if he watched any of it. He said, of course, that he didn't but then said it was four days of "...dark, very dark speeches..." He went on to tell us that the Republican National Convention would be "uplifting" and "positive". Well, of course he lied....and that's not what happened. If you watched any of it, and I did, the message was one of fear. You were, time after time, warned that there would be no "law" no "order" and that if Joe Biden and the Democrats are elected it is the end of the American civilization.  You will lose your freedoms and the United States will crumble under the weight of socialism. Weary...

Socialism

You're going to hear plenty about "socialism" over the next 64 days. So, what is it?  Socialism is your fire department. At one time only those that could afford fire protection by paying for it...got it. No longer. Socialism is your police department, your trash pick up, your roads, bridges, schools. None of us pay "privately" for that...we all chip in. Socialism sent Americans to the Moon...and back. Socialism created and maintains our national parks and historical sites. Socialism is our agriculture system propped up by subsidies. 

This "rugged individualism" that you and I are being fed is hog slop. But it "sounds" good. 

So, if "socialism" works so well for nearly everything in our lives...how about health care or a shared economy where the wealthy and major corporations pay up what they really owe?  Oh, no...can't do that because that would not be American. Weary....

Doesn't Bother Me At All...

The other day on National Public Radio Michel Martin visited with three young Republican delegates about their party's convention. Sitting down to discuss politics were Jessi Rapelje, Hayden Padgett and Maria Vasquez. If you want to listen, here is a link.

It was all pretty vanilla until Martin asked these three young Republicans if they were bothered by the untruths the president tells on a daily basis and especially what he said during his (very long) acceptance speech. Here is what was said:

Michel Martin: "...I'm talking about outright false statements, like the fact that - saying that, you know, the economy - this is the largest tax cut in history. That's not true. Saying that the economy was lagging when he took office - that's not true. Saying that he protected people with preexisting conditions when, in fact, you know, Republicans have been trying to repeal Obamacare, and when Republicans had both houses of Congress, and the presidency did not present a replacement bill and still haven't.  So I just have to ask, did any of those things bother any of you about this convention?"

The answer was basically, "nope". The three young Republicans simply denied that the president lies...all the time.  But the best line came from Jessie Rapelje of Virginia when she said, "I think that the president did focus on facts. I mean, the fact that we're pulling out and dicing three statements or, you know, a handful of statements out of four nights of a convention of really, really solid policy-based speakers I think points to the fact that, you know, we can go back and forth on these small issues."

There you have it. It doesn't matter. Income inequality, health care, the economy...they are all, according to Ms. Rapelje "small issues".

That's about all you need to know.

There Is A Difference

Not my words but did see this the other day: "Joe Biden inspires a kid to overcome stuttering while the president inspires a kid to kill." I'll just leave it there.

Wise Words

We've all heard it. Maybe from our parents or a teacher or a coach or our spiritual leader: "Admitting that you are wrong is a positive step toward true leadership." It would appear that Gov. Kim Reynolds (R-IA) was never was told that or she has forgotten. Cleary the young woman is floundering as people in Iowa die. Hell, we're even making national news as the number one state in the nation with more positive COVID19 cases per 1,000 people.  Nice going.

Last week Reynolds closed bars in six counties...never mind that 93 counties are wide open and never mind that to get to one it doesn't take a full day of travel by horse. And she refused to issue a mask mandate because it is not enforceable. Well, Menards enforces it. Costco enforces it...  But this is about more than masks. This is about the abject failure of this governor to pay attention to science. It is about her fawning over the president and caring nothing for the people she was elected to protect...and serve. She is the poster child for failure.  We can start reining her in come November.  You've got to flip the Iowa House and get really close in the Iowa Senate. (Image: Brian Duffy)

It's nearly 7:00AM...yeah, I'm tired. I'm tired of not being able to hug my kids or grandkids. I'm tired of not being social. I'm tired of Zoom meetings. I'm tired of hearing about friends being taken to the hospital because of the coronavirus. I'm tired that we care nothing, nothing about people in nursing homes. I'm tired of the failure of my fellow citizens when they don't take this stuff seriously.

I've seen plenty but I've never witnessed a nation, state, county, community so divided. And, it is killing us. You would think something this horrible would pull us together. But it has not...and that makes me very weary.

On a positive note...I get to go out and sign up voters today. Also get to encourage people to send out a request for a mail in ballot. See ya on the street...and have a fantastic Sunday.

 

 

 

 

 

Sunday Morning Coffee 23 August 2020

 

Gather around my friends and grab a hot cup of Sunday Morning Coffee...mixing politics with a bit of religion for over a decade. I get to write about the stories you've seen or, perhaps, missed all laced with my commentary. It's what I get to do while you're snoozing. Enough...let's go!

It Was A Grand Convention

The 2020 Democratic National Convention held my interest each night. Gone were the crowds and the noise. Every speaker, it seemed, was speaking directly to me. Oh, I get it...those of you who have actually been to the convention long for the friends, the noise and the
excitement...oh, and the parties. But this was a fitting way in which we got a healthy dose of policy and purpose. Loved the panel discussion with Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ) with the others who were locked into the very long primary season. It was refreshing and, frankly, fun.

The no-holes barred speech by Michelle Obama and the measured address by President Obama were both a call to action and sanity. Then on Thursday night Vice President Joe Biden spoke. As my brother said in a phone call after the speech, "Where in the hell has that been? Had he unleashed THAT during the primary season it would have been lights out long before the election." He's right. It was both emotional and on point. Now the question is, "Are you ready to go to work?" We've got 73 days...73...to right this grand ship.

Meanwhile...

The S*it Show ramps up tomorrow evening. Four nights of lies and bluster designed not to bring a nation together but to further divide us. Take your meds and pop some corn... Looking at the line up of speakers I noticed that Gov. Kim Reynolds (R-IA) one of the most ardent fans of "45" isn't scheduled. I understand that she's too busy trying to figure out her latest attempt at "COVID Math".  Weary.

Four Times

By Thursday evening "45" couldn't take it anymore. So he called into the Sean Hannity Show. Sean is always willing to allow the president time to spew garbage and he didn't disappoint. At least four times during the broadcast "45" talked about how the upcoming November election is going to be a "fraud". "You know, Sean, they are sending ballots out to who knows who. Even dead people are getting them. They mailed out 50 million ballots to nobody knows. I'm telling you this is going to be the most dishonest election in history!" Clearly "45" is setting it up so that when he loses he can claim that the voting was rigged and we'll have yet another battle on our hands.  It's sad that the president doesn't seem to know the difference between a ballot and a ballot request. But, make no mistake...he knows and he's just feeding his base. Speaking of which...

Civil War

I will admit to you that among my several thousand Facebook "Friends" there is a small group of "Christian Patriots" and "MAGA Forever" folks. And...oh my. It's entertaining, and a bit scary, to read their screeds. One of the increasing themes is that if "45" loses in November there will be armed resistance against the incoming Biden Administration. "If we are denied at the polls in this fake election we're ready to go to war..."  No joke. Meanwhile the conspiracy theories that are shared are also..."out there". The "Deep State" rant is pretty regular so too is the not so veiled accusation that Democrats engage in the traffic of children for sex. All of the hallmarks of way too much time crawling the Web looking for conspiracy theories that match their political bent. 

Here is another interesting thought. Shakespeare, in Hamlet, offers this well known line: "The lady doth protest too much, methinks". It's a common way in which people indicate doubt concerning someone's sincerity.  Ever notice how many folks that rail against LGBTQ issues, pedophilia, and minorities seem to have a secret life?  Just throwing that out there...

Go Back To School!

It's official, the Des Moines Public Schools have joined the Iowa City Public Schools and the Iowa State Education Association in taking Gov. Kim Reynolds (R-IA) and her administration to court regarding her demand that schools open up for in person learning. A hearing is scheduled for 3 September. The interesting thing is, and I'm not an attorney, that, from my understanding, the law is pretty clear on who  makes local education decisions. 

I was reading a news account, on line, about the decision of the DMPS to join in this effort and was struck by a comment made by a very angry citizen: "I don't understand these teachers and why they are so fearful of teaching in person. I'm an essential worker and so too are my kids, we work in a grocery store, and we come into contact with all kinds of people and you don't see us not showing up to work!" Well, there is a slight difference. Those essential workers, whom we are all grateful for, in your grocery store have contact with people, most of whom now wear masks, for only a few minutes. Meanwhile in the petri dish we call a classroom teachers are in a room with dozens of kids every day, for extended periods. Have any of you been to anything lately where kids are gathered? There isn't any social distancing or masks or even adults being adult and demanding the kids be safe. It ain't happening. Here is the prediction...especially here in Polk County...I'll give those districts maybe two weeks before they are forced to shut stuff down due to community spread. I know teachers want to teach and kids are eager to get back to school but...had we taken all of this more seriously months ago...we might....might....be prepared to open up. But the governor failed. Cedar Rapids

Speaking of failure. The Governor of Iowa had her "Katrina Moment"...or should I say "Katrina Days". It took Gov. Kim Reynolds (R-IA) days before activating the National Guard to help in storm clean up. It took even longer for her to request federal aid. And it took her several days to even visit the states second largest city that by all accounts is in tatters. I was listening to City Administrator, and one-time Des Moines resident, Jeff Pomerantz talk about how during the last flood about 7 square miles of the city was impacted. However the storm impacted 75 square miles of Cedar Rapids.  Even today they are still struggling. What a failure...and so many are giving her such good marks on her handling of the state. Weary... Meanwhile the devastation to the corn crop is going to be another hit for farmers. Already reeling from low prices and exports Iowa farmers are taking stock of millions of acres of ruined crops and livestock.

It's going to be sunrise in a few minutes...need to get this posted. My Bride got back from her extended trip hiking and back-packing the Porcupine Mountains of Northern Michigan. By all accounts it was a great trip and, from the photos I saw, the area is beautiful. No injuries but one tired lady. She "zonked" for about 11 hours Saturday night and then spent hours yesterday unpacking and repacking her equipment.  Last year the Grand Canyon this year the Porkies.  Got to hand it to her.

The Swamp

Remember when we were told that the swamp would be drained? Remember when we were told only the "best and brightest" would be welcomed to the White House leadership team? Gosh, that seems like so long ago...but, of course if was a lie. It was a lie designed to get those of you silly enough to believe the candidate, who who would become the "Huckster in Chief", was going to "shake things up" and put people who, like you, distrusted government and would finally put a stop to "business as usual". It was a lie. Sorry it didn't work out the way you thought...  But, in a way it has. Follow along.

Stamp Out The Post Office

Folks like Adolf Hitler, Pol Pot, Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping would love this. Article 1 Section 8 of the Constitution of the United States says that Congress has the power to "...establish Post Offices and roads". The silly idea was that mail and mail delivery should not be a private business but a public service. Today "45" is seeking to abolish the ability of the postal service to deliver ballots for the 2020 election. Dictators are cheering. One of the people living in the White House Swamp is Louis DeJoy...the Postmaster General. Louis is a wealthy guy who gave lots of cash the the president's campaign. He has zero post office experience and he was fast tracked to become one of the three deputy finance chairmen of the Republican National Committee joining Michael Cohen (convicted) and Elliott Broidy (under investigation...and screwing a Playboy Playmate who had an abortion and received "hush money" from the married Broidy). Nice bunch...

Anyway Louis is up to his neck in attempting to dismantle the Post Office. Last week news surfaced that 671 mail sorting machines were ripped out of USPS sites and that scores of mail drop off boxes were being trucked out of cities across America. The goal is not to improve postal service but to slow the mail so that come November hundreds of thousands of mail in ballots will not arrive or be counted.

Nice...swamp.

Vote and Die

Here is a real winner: Democrats, more so than Republicans, tend to take protection against COVID19 more seriously. You know "social distancing" and wearing a mask. Stuff that science says can stop community spread. So (now follow along) if you dismantle the ability to vote by mail and create a situation where you must go and vote in person it would make sense that many Democrats might just opt out. Ya gotta hand it to the GOP they have spent some time really thinking this through.

Outta Town

The U.S. Senate is out of town for a month long "vacation". Of course they left without passing a stimulus bill that would help protect Americans from being thrown into the street because they have no job and no income. On Friday the Commerce Department released their retail sales report that said you boosted your consumption of "stuff" by 1.2% and that "American consumerism is now back on track to pre-pandemic levels..."  Nice job!  And, because retail spending accounts for a major portion of the economy...we're on a roll! Oh, but wait! That retail sales report was for July when millions of unemployed Americans were receiving $600 a week to help cover their lost wages. That is now...gone.  Wanna take bets on where retail sales go this month?  Yeah, Mitch and Chuck and Joni went on vacation... 

Lights Out!

When New York City gets six inches of snow the media is quick to tell the world about the "Snowmageddon" that will inflict so much pain upon the residents of Gotham. But when an "inland hurricane" with sustained winds of 100 mph hits the "Fly-Over States" and wipes out billions of dollars of crops, homes, businesses and results in over 500,000 without power for...days.  Nobody says a word.

That must be why Gov. Kim Reynolds (R-IA) waited days until she activated the National Guard and actually visited the dismantled city of Cedar Rapids. While there she said she would request federal disaster aid on...Monday or Tuesday of...this week.  Why the long wait? Well, if you don't say it is real maybe it will go away? But in reality the word is she was busy doing her "COVID19 Back to School Math" and couldn't be disturbed. (Image-KGAN)

You'll Be Just Fine...

Meanwhile teachers in Iowa are quitting. You see the State of Iowa really, really wants them to go back to teaching in those petri dishes we know as schools.  It will be safe because COVID19 will take "snow days" and not be present when Jimmy and Suzie board those busses and head off to do math, english and science (no...strike that...we don't believe in science). Of course then, following school, those same kids need to go home or to their grandparents (who by the way are old and disposable) so they can spread the love and chear and "ronna" around.

Teachers, who have been over worked and underfunded for years, are leaving the profession because they figure it might be safer to stay home. But, not to worry...Iowa is looking for substitute teachers and volunteers to "repair the breach" and get in there to instruct the kids.  No qualifications necessary. This is a perfect time for those of you who vote GOP to do the right thing and volunteer your time and energy. I know you are up to the task. (Image - Brian Duffy from Cityview)

Partly Personal

Yesterday I did my first Zoom Torah Education Class with my congregation in Mason City. That was really...neat and they want to do it more often.  Connection is so...important.  Meanwhile my Bride is hiking in the Porcupine Mountains of Michigan located along the coast of Lake Gitche Gumee. For those of you who know of Gordon Lightfoot you know what I'm talking about. 

Last week we spent three days without power. (I know...others have it much worse.) The first day was OK. Other than scrambling around to find a way to produce Insight on Business the News Hour with no electricity things worked out. Tuesday was a bit more difficult and by Wednesday we were looking at spoiled food, hot weather and sleep that was, at best, a four hour adventure.

Thursday morning came (way too soon) and we were visited by two young men who worked for Midwestern Electrical Contractors out of Norman, Oklahoma. They and others from states as far away as Colorado and Mississippi were in Iowa working 24/7 to get power restored. They were "walking the lines" to make sure it was OK to repair the broken wire that had about 40 houses still in the dark.

I went up to them to thank them for their efforts. Here is what they told me: "We love you people in Iowa. You are the best. People, whole neighborhoods, come out to clap and cheer us as we drive down the streets. We've been offered food, drink and a chair in the shade. It's not like that in other places.  We just got back to Oklahoma from being on the East Coast where people flipped us off, cussed at us and even tried to run us off the road. Iowa is way-cool."

Congratulations friends...it is "Iowa Nice" after all.

Sunday Morning Coffee 26 April 2020

Hello and welcome to Sunday Morning Coffee!  It's my look at some of the news stories you've seen or, perhaps, missed all laced with my commentary.  It's what I get to do on Sunday Morning and this has been a regular Sunday feature for twelve-plus years.  Lots to talk about...let's go! 

OPEN IT UP!

Americans are a strange lot. The cry is to open up for business and the reason is solid. We're going through the worst economic crisis we've seen in decades. According to White House economic advisor Kevin Hassett the decline in the second quarter of our Gross Domestic Product (GDP) could be the worst...ever. But, here's the deal:

When the politicians start going out shaking hands and kissing babies...maybe, just maybe, we'll go back to normal. The problem is they won't and neither will we. Americans know the hit we're taking. We feel it every day.  Yet 70% of us approve of some sort of restrictions or shelter in place orders.  And, what is interesting, is that 70% crosses party lines and age demographics. 

It would seem the majority of us are smarter than the politicians.

Happy Birthday!

Today is the birthday of the First Lady of the United States. My wish for her is that she knock some sense into her husband. We would, then, be much better off.  Happy Birthday!

Those MAGA Rallies

Each day for weeks we've had to endure "45" speaking to the nation about COVID-19 except much of what he says are outright lies. No different than what we've witnessed during his MAGA Rallies. Trouble is...now he is playing with the lives of people across the planet with phony ideas like shoving light down your throat and injecting you with bleach.  YIKES!  As usual there is no science just blubber.

But, the good news is that yesterday the president said those daily briefings "...aren't worth the time." So maybe...just maybe we'll be spared.

Lack of Leadership

By now, after 12+ years of authoring Sunday Morning Coffee, you know that I have zero tolerance for the lack of bold leadership and empathy by those that we elect. Recently a Facebook Follower took me to task because I criticized Gov. Kim Reynolds (R-IA) and her total lack of leadership regarding the people of Iowa who are facing increasing threats of COVID-19.  The person wrote: "So, tell me what would you have done differently?"  It's a good question and here is the answer:

• Make a Phone Call - Long before the first case showed up in Iowa you would think the governor would have reached out to Gov. Jay Inslee (D-WA) or Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) and asked them, "What the hell is going on and how are you taking measures to keep your citizens safe?"  Asking for input and help is not a weakness it is a strength;
• Enlist the National Guard - We have a standing army ready to work on behalf of our citizens. They and the U.S. military already have pandemic plans in place. We should have, long ago, been asking for direction;
• Get Personal Protection Equipment - Long before there was a run and long before the U.S. government started "stealing" PPE a leader would have started the ball rolling to get what we need stockpiled for our front line medical professionals;
• Get a Doctor - I would have held news briefings with a doctor on the platform. This idea that a lawyer knows anything about public health is a joke. One or two trained experts in medicine speaking truth would have gone a long way toward protecting and explaining;
• Embrace Science - What does science say?  Get the best minds in Iowa and across the nation to offer input. Telling Iowans that light and bleach might be effective ain't...science.

The Republicans Hate Voting

This is so rich that if it were not so serious...it would be a hoot. We all know that a giant part of the GOP playbook is to restrict voting and voting access. Look what they did in Wisconsin where now at least seven people have come down with COVID-19 because they were forced to stand in line for hours to vote.

Now the GOP is telling Americans that voting by mail (VBM) is a danger to our democracy. Bull!  It's not. The United States Military has been voting by mail...forever.  Not once have we heard a call to cease VBM there.  So, why now? Because the Republican Party knows Americans are wising up and we realize their answers are not in the best interest of the vast majority of us.  If you want proof just look at where so much of the Paycheck Protection Program money went.

According to the Congressional Budget Office the majority of loans amounted to no more than $150,000 but...and this is important...those loans amounted to only 17% of the total dollars out. Meanwhile Delta and United Airlines are getting billions and promise to layoff staff.

Partly Personal

Recently I've made the decision to stay away from Social Media on Shabbat. I had gotten away from that practice in recent years. While I like the interaction I'm really not wanting to "mix it up" on the Sabbath. So, that's why I've been absent over the past several weeks.

However...here are two issues that came up last week and I'll address them here.

Guns and Gun Ownership

Last week my campaign received recognition that we are a "Moms Demand Action Gun Sense Candidate". What does that mean? In short it means that I support things like:

• Background checks for all gun sales;
• So called "red flag" laws which give family or law enforcement a way to temporarily suspend a persons access to guns if they pose a serious threat to themselves and others;
• Prohibiting domestic abusers from purchasing or possessing firearms.

In addition I do not believe "military style" firearms have any place in our society. Some argue they are good for hunting. If you need a semi-automatic weapon to kill a critter you need to become a better shot. Finally I oppose the ownership of large capacity magazines. Again if you need 20 rounds to shoot a coyote you need to go back to the range.  

If that's a deal breaker...so be it.  But, you need to also know that I am a gun owner who enjoys range and trap shooting. OK?

Legalizing Recreational Cannabis

I was asked, via email, my position on this issue. Let's go: Years ago I sat down with the then Iowa Secretary of Agriculture, Bill Northey and we talked about this. To be sure, my politics and his are vastly different but we are still friends. I suggested that Iowa should, as we do with other items, regulate cannabis growth and sales and then...as we do with cigarettes and booze...tax the hell out of it. And, what do we do with those tax dollars?  Plow them into our public schools so that we can regain our educational superiority that we once had. Again, if that is a deal breaker...so be it.  I think you deserve a straight answer.

Sunday Morning Coffee 29 March 2020

Hey...It's the final Sunday of what many are calling a "lost month". Welcome to Sunday Morning Coffee my weekly look at the stories you may have seen, or missed, all laced with my commentary. Why? Because it's what I've been doing for well over a decade and besides, sleep is overrated. So, let's move....

Massive Rallies

Just because "45" can't engage thousands of believers in stadiums where he rants and lies doesn't mean he's not holding them...he's just moved the venue to television where the, often, two hour "Coronavirus Updates" does the same thing. Actually, if you believe the polls its a smart move. The president is enjoying the largest bump in his approval rating...ever. Two weeks ago his approval rating among several polls was as 44% today it is 47%. On his handling of the pandemic, Gallup found 60% of American adults approve. A Fox News poll out Thursday found it lower, at 51%. Reuters/Ipsos and Economist/YouGov polls had it at 49%. Trouble is 'non-voters" are the ones who are giving the president the bump.  You can see the NPR story here.

Meanwhile this president continues to flounder, lie and remain ineffective when it comes to leadership. You may have forgotten the big story back on March 13 when he announced that Walmart, Target and CVS would start "massive community testing" in their parking lots. Of the 16,580 combined physical stores in the U.S. only four...four...are doing community testing.  And they are not testing "everybody".

That, my friends is just one example of the "Lost Month". Had this president been a leader and not joked and put off and dismissed COVID-19 we would all be in a better place today. This is on him. 

The Blame Game

We're now hearing calls for "unity" as the U.S. struggles and becomes the nation with the most confirmed cases of the virus on the planet.  I believe this nation is united in the reality that we are..."scared and confused" because of the mixed messaging coming from leadership. The president should, as others have suggested, take a cue from Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D-NY) and Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) who offer up facts and science rather than empty promises and threats. As late as yesterday the president was still blaming science, congress and even President Obama for what he, himself, did to our national readiness to address this pandemic as he cut funding all in the name of "saving money".

There have been calls for the president to "step aside" and let the doctors and science deliver the updates. That will not happen because, see above, they have become political events.  Weary.

Easter

If you want a perfect example of how tone-deaf "45" is to this nation it was his proclamation that he would like to see "business as usual" by Easter. "It would be a beautiful thing to see churches full on Easter. It's much better there. I know, I had to go to church last week by watching it on television." WTF?  Anybody wanna bet?  Unless it was him giving the sermon it's difficult for me to see this guy at any religious function...well, OK, he's been to a funeral or two and remember how uncomfortable he was? 

But, I digress. It would seem to me, a non-Christian, that this has now become another wedge. So, what about the Mosques, Temples and Synagogues? Anyway, I'm sorry but this guy is playing you...big time. BTW... Happy Easter.

Can't Fix Stupid

New Jersey authorities report that police charged a Wade E. Jackson with allegedly obstructing the administration of law or other governmental function, and violating the “Emergency and Temporary Acts,”. Sounds serious.  So what did Wade do?  He threw a "Coronavirus Party" in his apartment this past Friday night. Meanwhile, two Lakewood, N.J. residents were charged earlier this week after police broke up a gathering of 25 people at a school.  New Jersey what's going on there? Other than the fact that the state reported 2,289 new coronavirus cases Saturday, with a total of 11,124 in the state. At least 140 have died in New Jersey from the virus.

It's Not Really Shelter In Place

Last week, here in Iowa, Gov. Kim Reynolds (R-IA) continued to shutter more places of business. On the list, along with salons and restaurants are furniture stores, non-essential surgeries and a host of other items. Meanwhile the governor said it is not time to issue a "shelter in place" declaration. Meanwhile there are, according to several sources, those who are saying any closing of any business or park or golf course is an illegal crackdown on their civil liberties. I wish I were kidding.

Food Production

Later today on our business news broadcast on News/Talk 1540 KXEL I've got a story about workers in food processing plants that are testing positive for COVID-19. Workers at poultry giant Sanderson Farms based in Mississippi and Smithfield Foods in South Dakota tested positive. This morning in the Des Moines Register there is a report that at JBS, a processing plant in Ottumwa, a worker has tested positive and is in isolation. The facility employees 2,200 people. In all cases the companies say production will continue and that they have added more workers to clean and sanitize the plants. (Image: Boston Globe)

To be sure the food from a plant where infection pops up doesn’t pose health concerns because by all accounts Covid-19 isn’t a food-borne illness. Supplies from a farm or a production plant with a confirmed case can still be sent out for distribution.

Yet, it is the workers who often are in close proximity to each other that is a worry.  While there has not been a disruption in food to this point it does give us some pause.

Instacart

In a related story workers at Instacart, a grocery delivery service, have said they will strike starting tomorrow if the company does not come through with better pay and protective equipment. According to a statement with the Gig Workers Collective...The workers are asking Instacart for an additional $5 per order and a default tip of at least 10% per order.

The group is also asking Instacart for safety provisions like hand sanitizer, disinfectant wipes, and soap, as well as expanded paid leave for people with preexisting conditions or those who are required to self-quarantine. 

News Outlets Struggling

And in case you've run out of stuff to worry about...consider this. Local news outlets are struggling even in the face of increased news consumption. It's been well documented that local newspapers, already under the gun due to declining readership and revenue, have cut staff. In some places up to 25% of the newsroom has been laid off and we could see more. Why? Declining revenue. As more and more restaurants, bars, events, furniture stores and other businesses are ordered closed who is left to pay for advertising? 

What is ironic is that as newspapers take down their pay-walls in response to getting the news out and available they are seeing a surge in band usage. For example the New Orleans Advocate and Times-Picayune announced that despite web traffic running “three to four times above normal” and digital subscriptions doubling, it would have to furlough a tenth of its staff and require the rest to work four-day weeks.

Even digital only newsrooms, like BuzzFeed have announced salary cuts in the face of lost advertising revenue.

This past week, here in Des Moines, Big Green Umbrella Media, the publishers of Cityview and the stable of Iowa Living Magazines, shut down due to revenue lost. 

Radio and Television stations are also feeling the crunch and changing formats and cutting staff.

My friend Rick Green, who was once stationed in Des Moines at the Des Moines Register and is now the editor for the Louisville Courier Journal, put out a four minute video explaining the situation and how his paper is attempting to overcome the revenue loss and, how critical it is that the news gets out to an ever expanding public hungry for information. All of this...matters.

Partly Personal

OK...enough...right?  Sorry for the stark look at our world today but it's all real. However, on the positive side we have witnessed some interesting and hopeful moments. People out walking with their families, stopping to chat (at a safe distance) and engaging each other online.  Some have even suggested that when we get on the other side of this crisis we very well may come out better; more engaged and less isolated.

My friend Chef Michael Leo, who is currently quarantined in Austria at a resort no less, said much the same thing to me yesterday in a video chat. "I think, when this is over, we will start to understand how important it is to become more like our parents and grandparents. We may start to believe in "buy local" as more than a slogan and really start to support each other professionally and personally." (Image from Strudl Haus - 2016)
