The Gun Will Keep You Safe

So much for that argument as judges, police officers and military personal are gunned down across the country.  The NRA would have us believe that if everybody is armed than everyone is more...safe.  Meanwhile the National Rifle Association continues to thumb its collective nose at the "ninety percent" of Americans who want, and now demand, some sensible firearms laws.  Makes you wonder just who our elected leaders listen to..  Oh, never mind it's always, "Follow the money...."

Which Brings Us to This...

With the vast majority of Americans demanding changes in gun laws comes another reality.  Last week President Obama (I just love writing those two words...) released a budget proposal that tanked with the "Right" and with the "Left".  The GOP controlled House said any tax increase language was a "non-starter" and my friends on the "left of sane" said any cuts to social programs is a "non-starter".  But...what do you think?  A recent CBS News poll indicates that 58% of you believe the best way to reduce the deficit is a combination of spending cuts and tax increases.  That is exactly what the president rolled out. The poll also says only 33% favor spending cuts alone and 2% favor tax increases alone.  What part of "listening" does congress not...get?

Who Pays for Budget Cuts?

The simple answer is...YOU DO.  Last week I received a first hand account on how this is done.  In Iowa the Department of Transportation is responsible for issuing drivers licenses.  Mine expired with my birthday so off to the renewal location I go. I was greeted by a friendly receptionist, 3 DOT workers and 40 folks jammed into a waiting room. One hour and twenty minutes later I left with my "temporary license".  One hour...and twenty minutes...gone.  I asked the friendly folks behind the slate gray counters (What is it with the lack of COLOR in government buildings?  Call Beau Foder MONDAY and get colored for cryin' out loud!) if it was always busy like this and why there are seven stations but only three workers. "They won't send us any more help. And, today?  Today is much less busy than the past three days."  So, there you have it my "Deficit Hawk" friends...  Who pays for your love of cut, cut, cut?  Me and I ain't happy...and neither are those "lazy ass government workers" you like to insult.

Speaking of Government...

The Iowa Legislature is getting closer to going home (please hold your applause...) but they have three mighty large pieces of unfinished business:

• How to stick it to cities;
• How to stick it to the poor;
• How to stick it to the kids.

Governor Terry Branstad (R-IA) has listed all three as "top priorities" for the legislative session.  He would love to reduce property taxes for out of state big box stores (that pay little to no Iowa taxes) and then shift that tax burden to the cities and counties who are already struggling due to cuts in service.  He would love to deny thousands of Iowans the opportunity to enroll in Medicaid because he doesn't "trust government".  And, he's already been a wonderment at sticking it to kids and thumbing his nose at allowable growth for school districts...remember that line item veto?  My personal goal between now and 2014 is to help find a way to defeat the governor.  He is no longer worthy of the position.

Robert Cramer & The Board of Regents

Last week the Iowa Senate blocked two of Gov. Branstad's nominations to the Iowa Board of Regents.  Craig Lang, the most powerful voice of farming, got caught up in the Harkin Institute flap at Iowa State University.  Done.  But, it was Robert Cramer who caused what appears to be the most troubling issue for the Des Moines Register who, in an editorial said the senate should approve both nominations. (The Register and my friend Editor Rick Green also endorsed Mitt Romney...they are becoming less creditable by the month.)  I suspect the Register and others were squirming a bit due to the religious nature of Robert Cramer.  While the governor would have us believe he appointed Mr. Cramer because of his "expertise in construction" it was really Mr. Cramer's public work on behalf of discrimination that must have caught the governors eye. The "Newspaper Iowa Depends On" said there should be no "religious litmus test for office".  I agree but this was not about religion this was about...equality.  Robert Cramer, through his very public work with the Family Leader and his "book banning" events during his tenure on the Johnston Public School Board tanked his nomination...not religion.  But, I know..."Christians are persecuted..."  How this crowd continues to behave like the victims is astonishing. 

Next To The Last Session?

Things are winding down at the Iowa Legislature but heating up in House District 43 as several people are now talking about running against the "Todd Akin of Windsor Heights"...Rep. Chris Hagenow.  Rep. Hagenow likes to portray himself as a thoughtful, nice guy when in reality he is another lackey for the bat-crap-crazy right.  Lots of talk going on about who and when to start the campaign.  Mr. Hagenow held on to his seat by twenty-two votes due mostly because the House Minority didn't have their house in order.  Maybe they have learned a lesson?  Hold on kids...this will be fun.

Partly Personal

It is the best kept secret in Urbandale, Iowa.  Last week I celebrated a birthday and our son and daughter took us to Isla Cozumel just east of 86th Street. Whoa!  Great service, super setting and a BIG place.  Private dining room, big outdoor patio.  Here is the link to their website but...WARNING...turn down your speakers.  The music is...uhm...not as good as the food.  Here we are celebrating a bit and what fun.  They did ask me if I had permission to travel from Windsor Heights to Urbandale.  Not to worry...I have Real ID!

Marriage Equality & The Supreme Court

You've gotta love the House Republicans sticking to the same old song sung by many of Southern Democrats during the 1950's when the Bible and morality were used to protest against African-Americans having the opportunity to attend non-segregated schools or marry across the racial divide.  Horrors!  "The moral fabric of our nation would be torn asunder should Negros be allowed to marry Whites." That same logic is being presented to the Supreme Court as House Republicans attempt to uphold DOMA and deny equality to people who simply wish to marry and share in the same responsibilities and benefits enjoyed by the heterosexual community.  One of the cool things about being OLD is that I remember the idiocy of past generations and it is being replayed yet again.  Weary...

 

The Christian Persecution Continues

It's Easter Sunday when much of America gets to go to a church near them and celebrate their faith.  Within a mile of my home there are no fewer than 15 Christian churches. (That is IF they are all "Christian"...you see some "Christians" deny other "Christians" are "Christian"....don't ask.)  So we've got all of these "C&E (Christmas & Easter) Christians headed to church in the most free religious nation on the planet and yet (drum roll) some Christian clergy, lawmakers and activists felt obligated to hold a press conference last week and tell the world that they are being persecuted for their beliefs.  Uhm...no Tamera Scott that's ain't exactly the deal.  You are being called out for being bigots and favoring discrimination and that has zero to do with what deity you swear alliance to.  It has everything to do with the fact you detest freedom and in true Taliban fashion seek to subjugate those who do not believe in your particular "Christian" set of values.  Double weary...

But, Let's Play Golf

Recently President Obama played golf with Tiger Woods and several other folks at a "hootie-tootie" golf club.  A British Tabloid (and you know how careful they are with facts and figures) picked up the story and started the rumor that the golf outing cost US Taxpayers $1 million.  Right Wing bloggers turned the lie into fact covered by Fox News and our own News Radio 1040 WGOP.  They repeat it over and over and over.  That activity dupes poor folks like Jim Crowley of Des Moines, Iowa who takes the president to task in a Letter to the Editor of the Des Moines Register.  Friends (and Jim) change the channel it will help your future writings become a bit more creditable.

Shoot 'em Up

I'm really trying to figure out this Republican fixation about guns.  What sort of paranoid world do you people live in where you oppose mandatory background checks in order to purchase a weapon designed to kill (or shoot poor little clay pigeons)?  What sort of paranoid world do you live in where you oppose limiting magazines to 10 lethal bullets rather than 20, 25 or 30?  I know...because it is your "right".  That is pure BS and indefensible.  Here is what I think is the real reason (gleaned from various comments on my personal Facebook Page).  You fear your government.  You fear people who look different that you, worship differently than you, speak a different language or live in a different part of the city.  You are afraid and you are holding the rest of us hostage with you fantasy.  Nobody is calling for laws to take away your weapons of destruction.  We are asking for sanity dealing with an issue that plagues this nation...a nation that loves violence.  But I'm a man of great respect for the Constitution and I'll offer this compromise: That the United States Government purchase and deliver to each child born a US Citizen a flintlock longrifle, ten lead balls and a gun powder enough to fill your powder horn.  Case closed and stop being silly.  BTW here is a cool video of how a longrifle works.  You KNOW you want one...join me.

Hey, Iowa...What's Going On?

Not much.  Governor Terry Branstad (R-IA) still wishes to deny needy Iowans medical care by opposing the expansion of Medicaid and replacing it with a more costly program which covers fewer people and leaves mental illness out.  State Sen. Kent Sorenson (R-Milo) is still bat-crap-crazy.  Iowa Secretary of State Matt Schultz (R-IA) is still chasing "Zombie Voters".  And some guy by the name of Hoiberg decided he'll continue to do some basketball stuff at a cost of $20 million over ten years.  That pretty much sums up last week's news.  Oh...wait a minute.  There is one other tiny story about...business.  Mike Owen wrote an Op-Ed piece for the Des Moines Register about how Iowa LOVES to provide major corporations, who pay little to no Iowa tax, millions of dollars in "research activity credits".  More than $45 million each of the past three years.  Most of those tax dollars went to start-up companies like, Rockwell Collins, Deere & Co., DuPont, John Deere Construction and Monsanto.  Small business?  Fa-get-about-it.  It's an interesting read but, don't expect any adjustments from the legislature "business as usual" is the mantra in Des Moines.

The Vilsack Family

I love it when I'm right.  Last week three interesting things happend with my friends Tom and Christie Vilsack: 1) Christie accepted a job in Washington DC as the Senior Advisor on International Education for the United States Agency for International Development.  2) The Vilsacks are buying a home in Dallas County (next to Polk County) and 3) Tom Vilsack, when asked if he is running for governor in 2014, said, "I already have a job."  The media went nuts first by saying that because Christie took a job in DC that any idea of she or Tom running for governor was out of the question. What the media failed to grasp (sometimes it is tough) is that her job (and many others) can be accomplished remotely.  Especially when it has something to do with "international education".  The key word there kids..."international".  That's not a single room school-house in Webster County that reaches all the way to Hamilton County. (face palm)  Long ago I predicted that former Gov. Vilsack would come back to Iowa and help our state regain some sanity.  Write it down...again.  Oh, and Gov. Branstad?  If Tom Vilsack runs Terry Branstad will run.  He has to...he's the only shot the GOP would have against a well respected former governor who, by the way, loved that job too.  Giddy...

So, Have You Heard of Breastaurants'?

I know of Hooters, Twin Peaks and the Tilted Kilt but "breastaurants"?  That is the name given to these eateries which provide grub and gawks from the mostly male patrons eager, it seems, to throw down plently of cash.  Billions of dollars even during the recession.  Must be the...food.  If you would like to see the story from ABC's Nightline all you need do is...follow this link.  Mounds of fun and don't you LOVE pop-culture?

Partly Personal - Passover

Matzah here, there and everywhere.  We've been celebrating Passover since the First Seder on Monday night.  Seven matzah filled days of denying ourselves stuff made with corn, wheat, rye, soy (I know the Iowa Farm Bureau HATES us!) and something called "spelt".  I have NO idea what the hell spelt is.  Anyway, Passover is often misunderstood by folks that are not Jewish.  Like when the local Hy-Vee store put Passover items on the shelves the day before Passover.  Uhm...we start buying and preparing for Pesach weeks in advance...but I did enjoy the "slices"!  Or the folks who wish me "happy holy week".  Do they really know that it is a FULL week? I dunno... Or when the Interfaith Alliance holds a anti-violience march on Passover Eve (Sorry I wish I could have stayed longer but there was matzah-ball soup to be made.).  At the Second Seder, (on the second night of the holiday) one of our non-Jewish guests asked the honest question, "Do you folks do this every year tied back to the beginning?"  He as astounded when the answer was, "yes".  Passover is an exciting time that mixes politics and religion with great tastes, friends and family.  Oh...and "matzah everything".

America Is Really 50 Countries

If you happen to be a member of the "LGBT Community" you know what I mean.  No other group, in this nation, feels like a state line is really a border crossing into a minefield of social injustice.  In Iowa we're lucky.  But travel to Oklahoma or Mississippi and you are in another world of discrimination.  Cross the border from Washington into Idaho and everything changes in the way people, business and society can discriminate.  While we get bits and pieces of this story this article from John D. Sutter for CNN describes the crazy world of how "states rights" trample human rights.  Amazing...

More With Sen. Rob Portman

Let's stay on that topic for just a moment.  Last week I welcomed Sen. Rob Portman (R-OH) to the real world as he announced his support for marriage equality but gave him a jab for waiting two years and countless hurts to other humans.  My friend Leonard Pitts of the Miami Herald took the senator to task in a longer piece, "Right Decision, Wrong Reason".  It is a great read.

But Let's Move On to Mississippi

You've got to love "states rights"...that is unless you live in one of the many "red states" that have a passion for goofy.  This past week the enlightened state of Mississippi, which ranks in the top five for obesity, decided to pass into law the "Anti-Bloomberg Act" that, in essence says Mississippi and not the federal government will have control over food and fat.  Just another reason to avoid, like the plague, that "Stars & Bars" enclave...or is it clavern?

President Obama & Israel

During the 2012 election I heard from a great many on the "Christian Right" about how President Obama does not support Israel and dislikes the Jews.  Why?  "Because Obama is really a Muslim and he has no intention of extending friendship to Israel."  (Yep, that's how they roll.)  Well, last week President Obama traveled to Israel and not only did he, in no uncertain terms, speak about the depth of commitment he and the US has toward Israel he got along famously with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and just before leaving brokered a deal to have the prime minister make a call to his Turkish counterpart Prime Minister, Recep Tayyip Erdogan and extend an apology for a 2009 IDF raid on a Gaza bound "flotilla".  (That's another story.) The odd thing about this is that both the "Left" and the "Right" will see something wrong with all of this....watch.

We're Learning More - Health Care In Iowa

Ever since Gov. Terry Branstad (R-IA) made his now famous decision to reject having Iowa extend Medicaid coverage to about 150,000 poor Iowans because "I don't trust the federal government..." I've wondered where his "crack-pot" Healthy Iowa Plan had been hatched.  We now know the answer.  It seems the governor had been doing his homework in Indiana where that state also set up a substandard public/private insurance program that was to have assisted 430,000 Indianans. The Indiana plan, which favors private insurance companies with profits, covers only 39,000 and it costs Indiana taxpayers...more than Medicaid.  Much of this sound familiar?  Laura Hermer wrote a piece that details the flawed Indiana program and suggests that the "Healthy Iowa" plan need a checkup.  Here is the link to the Des Moines Register Opinion Page.  And, speaking of trust, we now see the real reason Gov. Branstad wants to opt out of the Affordable Care Act.  Follow the money.  Sad but predictable.

Let's Stay In Iowa For A Bit...

On one hand Iowa is a great progressive state.  On the other, it is a scary bastion of legislative bat-crap-crazies.  (Drum roll....) Enter State Senator Kent Sorenson (R-Milo) who, last week, poisoned a bill authored by State Senator Janice Peterson (D-Des Moines) which had to do with removing shackles from pregnant inmates about to give birth.  How did our "new found uber-religious friend" Sen. Sorenson get this done?  By an amendment to the bill which would prohibit the use of state money to "perform or facilitate" inmate abortions.  Even though none is used.  Told you Iowa is...odd.

But It Doesn't Stop There

Last week Iowa House Member Rep. David Maxwell (R-Montezuma) distributed a copy of the weekly newspaper the Montezuma Record (that contains advertising placed by Rep. Maxwell's business) to each member of the Iowa House.  Why?  Well, because Rep. Maxwell said he wanted his fellow members to know who was making more than $100,000 a year at the University of Iowa.  Except the names of the people were of a big interest to the newspaper. According to the story the paper found it worthy of reporting, "The relatively high numbers of employees with names from Asia and the Near East is interesting. While there are Smiths and Jones, there are eleven Ahmeds to only 30 Browns." And, this:  "Hyphenated, un-spellable and oriental names may get you the big bucks." Rep. Maxwell said he is sorry and he should have read the entire article. The larger question is...why?  Why would a guy with a field tiling business be concerned with the number of instructors and staff at the University of Iowa who make over $100,000?  Maybe because he considers paying educators well is a problem?

Women and Equal Pay

Last week we shared with you the story of the end of racial issues in the United States.  Just ask Alabama who wants the Supreme Court to overturn sections of the Voting Rights Act.  This week we learned that there is no pay disparity between men and women who are working at the same jobs.  It's true Randall Bradley of Council Bluffs said so in a Letter to the Editor to the Des Moines Register last week saying that my friend Rekha Basu was perpetuating a "myth that pay disparity between women and men is due to discrimination".  There you have it.  Problem solved!  Except it ain't true.  Space limits me here but if you wish to see the facts (everybody but those of you who are Republicans because I know how much you hate science...and fact) might want to read this update by Rekha, "Sexism, not career choices, drives wage gap" from the Des Moines Register.  BAM!  So, what the hell are you going to do about it?

Traffic Cameras

Nothing that I post on my personal Facebook Page gets more activity than when I mention my support for traffic cameras.  The comments that deride my opinion are usually couched in "government overreach", "the Constitution", "Big Brother", etc.  Two things to share with you and this is my opinion:

• If traffic cameras cut down on the number of "red-light runners" I see daily at 86th and Douglas or 86th and Hickman in Clive and Urbandale we are all safer.  If you follow the law...relax.
• It is about revenue.  Those of you who demand lower taxes from everybody are, in essence, lowering the revenue to the cities we live in.  Somebody needs to bring that back or we cut services.  Which would you like to start with? Roads? Police? Fire? Food Banks? Zoning? Housing? Services free to Non-Profits?  Come on...lemme know.

Partly Personal

This weekend my friends opened up the 515 Brewing Company and packed the place with hundreds of folks who like "craft beer".  Several hundred self-described "beer snobs" packed themselves into the new Clive, Iowa brewery for the festivities.  It was a nice time and the age ranged from just over 21 to really OLD FOLKS like me.  So it would seem "beer snobs" come in all ages.  I just wish I could get over my Miller Lite life and enjoy some of this stuff but the after-taste is just too much to handle. See, I am a "leftist wienie".

For those of you who keep up with Mom & Me there is a new post about, "That Hooker".  Hey, I don't make it up.

Politics, News, Opinion - SMC 03/03/13

Glee and Sequester

With the excitement some only reserve for their wedding night my friends in the GOP welcomed "The Sequester".  Some of the more recent comments: "Finally we will take our country back from the brink of financial ruin."  "If this president wants a socialist society he'll now have to find another way.  We'll shut it down first."  Clear thinking from my conservative friends.  Meanwhile, outside of politics, there is a very human side of sequester as thousands of "lazy ass" government workers will accept furloughs and layoffs.  Meanwhile, thousands of factory and technical workers will lose their jobs as providers of military equipment.  The list is long and lousy.   And this is the real shocker, according to the Associated Press, a significant number of Americans know nothing about the sequester.  Huh?  Weary my friends...weary.

It's Official

A couple of weeks ago I shared with you my belief that Cong. Tom Latham (R-IA) would not attempt a run for the US Senate seat being vacated  by Sen. Tom Harkin (D-IA).  BAM!  Right again as Cong. Latham shared with his supporters that he is not going to make an attempt.  This now opens the door for Cong. Steve King (R-IA) who has expressed interest.  Meanwhile other names have surfaced Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey (R-Spirit Lake), former News Radio 1040 "WGOP" blow-hard Steve Deace, Lt. Gov. Kim Reynolds and a guy who might be considered by my Tea Party friends to be a RINO, Doug Gross.  Four of the five share similar political views.  Sec. Northey, a personal friend, would run a good race. But, once his very conservative religious nature emerges that could be an issue.  Steve Deace can not win a state wide US Senate race and, frankly, neither can Cong. King or Lt. Governor Reynolds.  That leaves Doug Gross the "establishment candidate" who will be rejected by the wacky fringe.  So if Cong. Bruce Brailey (D-IA) does not stumble...he should win...big.

Speaking of the Tea Party

It seems to be alive and thriving in Iowa. There is a new webcast show hosted by Tea Party activist Ken Crow.  Two funny things last week on his show The Tea Party Community - Daily Brief: 1) He was naming the worst cities in the nation and said, "These cities are in three states, New York, Calfornia and Michigan all run by democrats."  Sorry Ken...Michigan is run by one of your darlings.  Then later in the broadcast (8:31) a listener "Karen" posed a question about how the Obama Administration is putting "...dihydrogen monoxide in the water".  And listed the dangers of government and how much "dihydrogen monoxide" there is in foods.  Ken, of course, bought right in...  However, dihydrogen monoxide is...water. Nothing more.  Smart cowboy that Ken.

The University of Iowa...

Is fast becoming a laughing stock.  If you have a kid going to school there just try to learn something from the school about his/her progress, attendance, etc.  You will be told "Sorry, we are not allowed to share that information with you."  However, should you be the sheriff all you need to do is pick up the phone or send an email and you get...everything.  It's the latest embarrassment faced by the University and uncovered by the Des Moines Register.  A president without a contract, a dean accused of sexual misconduct, a lousy football program (hey...we have priorities!) and this.  Weary...very.

Speaking of Higher Education

Looks like Gov. Terry Branstad (R-IA) really likes Craig Lang on the Board of Regents even though Mr. Lang has been accused of interfering and making political points in favor of his alma mater the Iowa Farm Bureau.  Nah...can't be.  There is nothing political about education.  But, if you want a good read from our friends over at Bleeding Heartland...here you go.  Good stuff!

Meanwhile Marcus Branstad...

Has been named to state commission that oversees hunting regulations.  Marcus is the youngest son of Gov. Terry Branstad and an avid hunter.  No doubt this will seal the deal for lead shot for dove hunting in Iowa.  What?  Yes, there was quite a dust up last year when the Department of Natural Resources ruled hunters should use steel shot vs. lead due to posoining issues among eagles.  The governor and Marcus disagreed and overruled the ban and it was Marcus who showed up in full camo for the annual "turkey pardon" by the governor on Thanksgiving.  That's my boy!

The Minimum Wage

Here it comes.  The "job creators" are warning that if the minimum wage is to be raised (the first since 1996) to $9 an hour nobody will ever find a job again.  That is such bunk.  Recently Sen. Tom Harkin (D-IA) suggested the minimum wage should be $10.25 an hour because even at $9 that's still under the poverty level.  Seriously...we need to protect business and reduce the minumum wage to $2 an hour...and start employing ten year olds in factories...again.  After all...that is the American way!

Partly Personal

It's been a tough week.  Koozie is, I think, 13 years old and has had back issues...something common to dachshunds. She had been recovering from an incident last week when on Wednesday night things got worse and it was off to the emergency room at the Iowa Veterinary Hospital.  My bride has written about the event in her blog, "Weiners, Wheels and Wine". "What Do You Do When Your Weiner Won't Stand Up".  Check it out...

Meanwhile my Mom has a new blog.  It's called Mom & Me and we just started writing down some of the opinionated things a 93 year-old says.  We'll keep that one going too.  Besides it shows the "softer" side of this Commie Bastard!

 

And then last night my friends raised over $1,200 for the Des Moines Area Religious Council Food Bank.  I got to go and here's what went on.

The Pope Quits

Just like US Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) and Senator Saxby Chambliss (R-GA) quit to make room for new ideas and new faces Pope Benedict XVI called it quits this past week.  Usually not caring one iota for what the Catholics do or don't do...unless they cook up another Inquisition...this caught my attention. Will the faithful elect another religious conservative or will they move to the left?  Will the Vatican look to a non-European to guide the Church or will it continue with the status quo?  A developing country perhaps?  I dunno but the politics of the Church is always an interesting thing...ask the Methodists. Living in Fear and Loathing

I love Facebook because it brings out the crazy in so many people who clung to the promise of a new world order under Gov. Mitt Romney believing with all their soul the "Dark Night of Obama" would end following the first Tuesday of November.  That didn't happen and rather than learn from their flawed approach to women, minorities, the middle-class, marriage equality and health care they have ramped up the shrillness of negativity and taken it to new low levels.  Let me be clear:  I believe in dissent and your right to voice opposition.  However being disrespectful to the President, showing contempt for our nation and continuing to drink from the "Well of Conspiracy" only distances rational conversation. When I read comments from my ill informed friends who parrot Breitbart/Hannity/Limbaugh/Fox News sound bites it is no wonder you can't get your folks elected.  Nobody can live in fear and loathing for that long and be positive about anything...can they?

Boy Scouts & Gays

"...it would be the beginning of the end for the Boy Scouts.", intoned Chuck Hurley, vice president of the Family Leader, the same group which said marriage equality in Iowa would forever doom marriage.  I don't think so but something should be done....but what?  Most scout organizations are sponsored by religious groups any "local option" compromise which leaves it up to the "sponsor" will create a "patchwork" of opportunities.  While my more orthodox religious friends may ban gays the liberal wings would welcome them.  Creating...choice.  However, "separate but equal" is a problem especially when an organization like the Boy Scouts seeks to appeal to the general public.  I know, I was president of the Iowa Junior Chamber of Commerce (Jaycees) when the state organization lost, in court, it's attempt to remain a male only group.  Correctly that error was judged to be in violation of public accommodation.  There are no easy answers here but, I suspect, in another generation folks will scratch their heads and ask, "What the hell was the big deal?".

The Shell Game

Among street cons one of the best known is the "shell game" where the "performer" places an object under a "shell" tells the dupe to "keep you eyes on that shell", moves them around quickly and then proves to the watchful dummy...they failed to see what could not be seen.  Same goes with the new Egyptian owned Orascom fertilizer plant which was given millions of tax dollars to build in Iowa.  All the while playing a "shell game" of sorts with the Iowa Department of Economic Development.  You see, my friends Debi Durham, Gov. Terry Branstad (R-IA) and a host of others failed to notice a federal lawsuit alleging that one of the company's off-shoots defrauded U.S. taxpayers out of millions of dollars.  Oops...  Never mind that the company has billions of it's own money.  Iowa decided, in the same year Gov. Branstad line item vetoed $500,000 from the Iowa Food Bank Group and then is on a mission to deny Medicaid coverage to thousands of poor Iowans, the rich business needed just a little more.  Gotta watch them...shells.

 

Speaking of Shell Games

My friend Iowa State Senator Jack Whitver (R-Ankeny) was crowing, on his Facebook Page, about introducing legislation which would eliminate the Iowa income tax and replace it with _________.  I asked how he hoped to replace the lost revenue from income taxes and he responded: "Michael - that is why the first step is the study. The first thing to look at is the sales tax exemptions. We have over 15 pages of exemptions to sales tax."  I'm smelling a "flat tax" a darling of the GOP. Of course, his "friends" lapped up his regressive tax proposal while denying the reality: It ain't going anywhere. Sen. Whitver may have joined folks like Herman Cain (remember him?), Gov. Rick Perry (R-TX), Dick Armey and our old friend Steve Forbes who has been pushing for a flat tax for years. The problem is, The Flat tax is a fraud.  It raises taxes on the poor and middle-class while decreasing taxes on the wealthy. "Wait! How can that be?", you may ask.  Because folks who are wealthy spend less, as a percentage, on living than do the poor and middle class.  Besides, we already have a "flat tax" system.  It's called "tax brackets" which treats everybody in that particular tax bracket the same. Next?

Who Should Vote?

During the State of the Union speech President Obama spoke about 102 year old Desiline Victor who made several trips to her Florida polling place and had to wait hours to cast her vote.  Hours.  Why?  Florida cut its early voting period from 14 days to 8 which resulted in longer lines and longer waiting periods. Why?  Gov. Rick Scott (R-FL) decided to experiment with voter suppression.  But it didn't work.  In fact it may have backfired as former Gov. Charlie Crist (D-FL) is making a run to return to Tallahassee.  Legislators and elected officials should be working to improve the voting experience and encourage more people to vote.  However some would limit that right to only those who "pay taxes".  Seriously, now in the minds of some of my Tea Party friends "only those who pay taxes should be allowed to vote".  Wonder what my 92 year old mother would say to that?  Oh, by the way I found it sad that Cong. John Boehner (R-OH) didn't make an effort to stand and salute Desiline Victor.  At least the 102 year-old woman made an attempt to stand and accept the applause of the Chamber.  

The Minimum Wage

The State of the Union speech wasn't even finished before my friends in the "pro-business" world decried the president's proposal to raise the minimum wage from $7.25 to $9 an hour as "hurting small business" and "causing more people to become unemployed". Let's take a look at the folks who employ the most people at minimum-wage jobs from our friends at Business Insider.  MOST small business people want their employees to do well because they understand that folks who can make a living contribute to the welfare of the entire community. However, those 20 businesses listed on the chart? (Go ahead and click on the chart to read.)

 

Cowards in Windsor Heights?

On Friday I got this piece of mail that must have been sent to each mailbox in the "Village" of Windsor Heights.  The call to action is to oppose a pawn shop in "The Village" and asks the good citizens to contact their elected city council members to voice, what I take is, opposition to allowing this "type" of business to locate here.  OK...no problem with that but...WHO sent the mailing?  Nowhere is there an indication of who sponsored the mailing.  Could it be the Windsor Heights Klu Klux Klan?  Might it have been the Windsor Heights Communist Party?  Who is the coward?  I dunno...  But, this I do know:  We already have a Wal-Mart in Windsor Heights...a pawn shop can't be worse.

Partly Personal

Last night some friends had a "soft opening" of the 515 Brewing Company. The back-story to this opening is the hours and hours of work and investment Ryan Rost, Dave Ropte, Brandon Criger and Bailey Forrest (and their spouses) poured into their dream.  We went over to have a look and offer you this:

 

One additional bit of information:  The 515 Brewing Company is located less than 30 feet from one of the highly used bike trails that meander through the Metro.  That will bring a summertime boost.  See, I can enjoy and celebrate capitalism...too.

Politics, Gossip, Opinion - SMC 11/18/12

Living Under a Cloud

The Internet is a wonderful thing.  We can sit and watch Iowa Public Television and ask ourselves "When was Grover Cleveland president?" and in an instant find the answer.  However, the Internet might also be what continues to drive depression and worry when it comes to the direction of our nation.  I can't tell you how many depressing news links and photos have shown up in my Facebook Stream.  People are talking about the "stolen election" and "moving to Canada" and "succession from the United States".  All of these goofy suggestions are then backed with "facts" folks find on the Internet.  It must be horrible to live under a constant "black cloud" and go through each day believing in some cooked up conspiracy theory promoted by...the Internet.  Odd.  Side note:  I found this stuff at the Urbandale HyVee...maybe some of this mixed with water (or vodka) might be in order?

The "Belief" System

I'm thinking that one of the reasons some folks are taking this election so bad is because they actually believed the stuff they were being handed by various political action committees.  For months PAC's told "the truth" about Gov. Romney or President Obama and many believed.  This was evident during the melt-down suffered by Karl Rove during the live broadcast of Fox News.  The GOP and their following believed their own press reports and wing-nuts like Dick Morris who said Gov. Romney was going to win in a "landslide".  When it didn't happen they and their followers were...crushed.  You've got to be very wary of..."the truth".  Honest.

The Media Failure

Shhhh...let's keep this between ourselves.  Unless you are deeply involved in Iowa legislative politics you have no idea there is an important special election coming up on December 11.  The local Des Moines media has done a wonderful job of keeping voters...uninformed. I know because I've been knocking on voters doors for nearly three weeks and when I share with them facts of the Special Election for Iowa Senate District 22 they are...shocked, stunned and surprised. They simply do not know. However, those who know about Senate District 22 believe (thanks to the media) that the opponent to Desmund Adams, the Democrat from Clive, is...John Ward. No kidding.  The ONLY media outlets that have done any work on this has been WHO-TV 13 and The Patch.  The others have all failed...miserably.  Maybe it is voter fatigue or maybe it's just folks being lazy.  We'll see.

Iowa House District 43 Recount

My friend, Susan Judkins (D-Clive) is in a recount process.  Only 22 votes separate her and opponent Chris Hagenow (R-Windsor Heights).  Twenty-two votes. The real powerhouse in the district proved to be Congressman Latham (R-IA) with 9519 votes, followed by President Obama with 9177. Hagenow (8729) fared worse than Romney (8810) or Latham (9519).  At 8700 votes, Susan received 477 fewer votes than Obama (9177)  but 868 better than Congressman Boswell (D-IA) at 7832.  When you look at the numbers Susan should have crushed Hagenow but the Democratic Party failed to muster the guts and the cash to peel back the onion and show the radical side of Hagenow.  I know, I should "play nice" with this but the facts and the stark differences between these two candidates couldn't be more clear.  I predict Susan will win this recount process. Stay tuned.

Christie Vilsack

Wednesday night I was with my friend Christie Vilsack who told me, "I'm polishing up my resume to see what is next."  Christie lost to Rep. Steve King (R-IA) in a bruising battle and Iowa failed to send it's first female to Congress.  (We are STILL tied with Mississippi on that factoid...nice huh?)  This one was a long-shot...but so many of us had hope that crazy would not prevail.  That, it turned out, was wishful thinking.  I remember so well that evening in Panora, Iowa where Mrs. Vilsack and I discussed the opportunity to run in Western Iowa and I shared that story in Sunday Morning Coffee. Thanksgiving Shopping

Some folks have their underwear in a knot because many stores are starting "Black Friday" sales on...Thursday which also happens to be Thanksgiving.  Me?  I don't care. In fact, if you really want to get the economy humming along, stores should be open 24/7 giving folks the opportunity to shop whenever.  Oh, wait...that already happens on the "Innernet".  Side note: I gotta tell you the traffic over the past couple of days has been...nuts.  Careful out there!

Jobs, Jobs, Jobs...

Last Sunday I shared with you the fact that Iowa has so much money to burn we're throwing it at already successful businesses.  The latest is Google.  You know...GOOGLE?  Yep, this week Gov. Branstad (R-IA) announced even more tax incentives to lure the multi-billion dollar tech giant to Iowa and increase the size of their "data farm" and head into wind energy.  Here's the story from our friends at the Des  Moines Register.

Speaking of Governor Branstad

"Just say...no" to a serious look at the Affordable Care Act and setting up the insurance exchange system.  Gov. Branstad (R-IA) has joined with others of his party in denying medical coverage for folks in Iowa.  The reason?  The governor is more concerned with the federal balance sheet than the health care of Iowans.  This would be laughable if he were alone.  But...he's not.

One More Thing on Jobs

My friend Danny Homan of AFSCME sat down with the state to start contract negotions for the thousands of workers who form the state, county and municipal workers union.  This is going to be a tough time.  Gov. Branstad (R-IA) has already bragged about bagging over 700 workers.  You know, those shiftless, lazy ass, government workers who work for us and are part of the fabric of the much talked about middle class. ("Branstad said he believed the lower health insurance costs underscored the emphasis his administration has placed on making Iowa the healthiest state in the nation and the reduction in the number of state employees by 718 since he took office in January 2011." Partly Personal

So, you really want to help your neighbor?  Why not enjoy lunch at a locally owned restaurant rather than a chain.  OK, I know many of these franchise operations are "locally owned" and provide jobs but, why not skip the franchise once or twice a week and head over to "Mom & Pop"?  We did just that last week and took Mom to Taste Buds in Urbandale.  Nothing fancy...just great home-made food from local owners and cooks.  I think Mom is hooked.

On Friday I traveled to Mason City for services at Adas Israel and for the unveiling of the head-stone for long time president of the congregation Justin Chapman z"l who died suddenly this past June. If you look closely you'll note only two stones on the marker.  That speaks volumes about the disappearing Jews of Iowa.  Sad.

Finally, and I am sorry, Sunday Morning Coffee is LATE today.  Rather than spend Saturday night writing I played hokey and took in some hockey.  Bucs lost but...hey it was nice to see some old friends and hear the slap shots ring through the old barn.

China - Iowa's Best Friend?

This week we learned that Governor Terry Branstad will visit his good buddy Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping...in China. Perhaps the governor is looking for advice on how to run "right to work" sweat shop factories and bone up on banning abortion. No, wait...only one of those would be accurate.  I have a word for this:  Duplicitous.  Hurry back governor...don't leave us alone with Lt. Governor Kim Reynolds...for long.  (While the Governor is there...wonder if he'll ask about Chen Guangcheng?  Nahh...that would be "awkward".) Photo: robert paul van beets / Shutterstock.com

Vagina & Janet Petersen

I am not sure how I missed this.  At first I thought it should be under the "gossip section" but did a little checking and bingo!  Rep. Janet Petersen (D-Des Moines) was debating Rep. Walt Rogers (R-Cedar Falls) in the Iowa House regarding traffic cameras.  I'm told she said, "This is the camera debate.  We debated cameras in the House Chamber so the people could see what we are doing.  We've discussed cameras in the gallery.  Now the same people who wish to demand and end to stoplight and speed cameras want women to be forced to stick a camera in their vagina."  She, at that point stopped talking and the buzz in the rest of the room went silent when they heard the word..."vagina".  At least we now know what will get the attention of the GOP legislators. I know you won't believe me so here is the story from our friends at Radio Iowa.

Patch-Work

There is this "hyper-local news group" called The Patch.  Nearly every village in the Des Moines Metro...has it.  It's a nice little way to share stuff.  Last week the West Des Moines Patch attempted to gather some steam with a "poll" regarding a local senate race.  I voted and made a comment (as instructed).  Then a person with a "made up name" lacking any identity took me to task for my comment.  (Cowards & bullies always hide you know.)  I responded directly to the West Des Moines Patch Editor Beth Dalbey saying it was sad to see they allow people to comment without owning their words.  And, yes, I signed my name.  Guess who's comment was...removed?  Seems like we need a little weeding in the garden patch...

But, Let's Move On...

I told you so.  Months ago I said it would get ugly in the Clive, Waukee, West Des Moines and Windsor Heights race for the Iowa State Senate.  I told you that Pastor Jeff Mullen would RINO the hell out of Sen. Pat Ward.  That seems to be the case.  And, what is too funny is that Mrs. Ward and her friends are (at the same time) trying with all their might to suggest that she is a "moderate".  Ahhhh...really?  Paling around with Senator Kent Sorenson,voting against allowing women to be in charge of their health decisions and working to pass big business tax cuts onto the backs of cities and homeowners is hardly...moderate.  This is going to be fun to watch.  The primary is June 5th and Pastor Mullen is well...well financed.

Let's Talk...Religion

One of the topics we're never to openly discuss is...religion.  The reason we are banned from talking about religion is because the vast majority of believers have no clue regarding their religion.  Rather than being informed they would much rather take the easy way out and just nod their head in agreement.  So, as a public service, allow me to help my Christian friends better understand what Jesus said about same sex marriage and what he had to say about divorce, war, the focus on wealth, caring for the poor...you know...those commie socialist things.  Fact is our buddy Jesus said...NOTHING about same sex marriage.  Zero.  But I would not expect you to believe a Jew.  So...here is a great read by a Christian who should maybe know this stuff.  And,while it's a bit long it is interesting.  But...warning...to the Family Leader Folk...you don't want to read this.  It could complicate things.

The Iowa Death Wish

Last week I was visiting with Carl Voss.  Carl's name may be familiar to those of you who watch what happens with the Downtown Chamber of Commerce.  You see, Carl was named the Citizen of the Year by the Chamber.  Nice.  In addition, Carl has won several other major awards from local to national and is the director of the Des Moines Bicycle Collective.  He's known and respected.  That's why when he told me this story about safety it struck me as odd.  You mean bike safety is a partisan issue?  Nah.....

 

Off camera and during his public remarks during an event Carl said, "We just can not get the 'R's' to move on this issue."  I suspect he is talking about men and/or women with the name of "Rusty"?

Today's Question:

To whom do the deer, roaming around the cities and country side of Iowa, belong?  I posed this question last week to a lawmaker.  She did not know, or did not wish to foster a guess. However, if, to hunt one of these varmints I need a license from the State of Iowa and the State of Iowa regulates the limit of how many I can "harvest" and the State of Iowa tells me when I may and when I may not hunt then...wouldn't it stand to reason...these things belong to the State of Iowa?  A little help here?

Last night our friend Jody Leo had a birthday party.  She is celebrating one of those "0 Birthdays" and her husband Michael put together a bash at Tursi's Latin King.  I've been there several times and I am always intregued by the "family nature" of the business.  Thanks Bob for your hospitality and...thank you Michael for the invite.  That was one fine...wine.

The Other Iowa

Just north and east of Iowa is the home state of class warfare.  Walkerland, otherwise known as Wisconsin, is now trying to deal with the latest development that may give a boost to the June 5th recall election.  Gov. Scott Walker faces the chance of being booted out of office following a series of anti-worker policies that have ginned up the middle class.  Walker has always maintained that he is not a "union buster" and that he really doesn't want Wisconsin to be like "right to work" Iowa.  But, last week this video surfaced where he shares with billionaire Diane Hendricks his "divide and conquor" method.

 

Why would billionaire Diane Hendricks, who has given over $500,000 to the Walker campaign, plead for union busting?  No doubt because she is concerned with middle class families.  No doubt.  If you are moved to donate to the Wisconsin Democratic Party and/or elect Tom Barrett here is that link.  I dunno about you but Diane is kinda cute/hot in a Draconian sorta way. (Visions of 5" heels and leather...told you there would be...sex.)

We Love Lead!

I don't hunt.  Once upon a time I did.  Back in the day when we lived on the farm and didn't have cash to buy meat.  Then, years later, I went pheasant hunting...once.  That time it was more of a fashion statement.  (I look damn sexy in blaze orange.)  In between hunting for food and looking cool I discovered grocery stores.  Anyway, Governor Terry Branstad took time out of his busy schedule to to issue an executive order rescinding one (of many) rules placed on dove hunting by the Iowa Natural Resource Commission who works under the review of the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.  The rule has to do with using lead shot.  The Governor wants hunters to use whatever the hell they want to use (Grenades next?) when they kill...doves.  Doves.  Ya know, when you figure the cost of dove hunting the end price of the meat you get must be...what...about $30 a pound?  Here is the full story from our friends at Bleeding Heartland. 

I'm Leaving My Wife

Oh, it's not anything she has done...other than the fact she is a...she.  You see my Christian Friends are right, there is a war on traditional marrage.  So, I'm throwing in the white (well actually rainbow) flag.  I have decided, following what the president had to say about "gay marriage", that I should wed Jim.  Jim is my bride's brother and he looks equally hot in blaze orange.  And, you know what?  Somebody will read this and actually believe it.  That's Iowa my friends.  We are all lathered up about icky gay people.  I am sooooo weary.

Speaking of Icky Gay People...

The Catholic Church and Keaton Fuller have come to a compromise regarding the presentation of at $40,000 scholarship from the Eychaner Foundation. (yep, $40K)  Keaton is an openly gay senior at Prince of Peace Catholic School.  Church official, Bishop Martin Amos had said "No!" to allowing a representative from the foundation to present the scholarship because being gay is icky to the faith.  Iowa went...nuts with loads of people and commie bastards (like me) signed petitions, wrote posts and (in the end) everybody came to a "compromise".  Don't you wish the Iowa Legislature would learn from that?  Here is the full story from my friends at the Des Moines Register.

Sitting Out?

It's not really "buyers remorse" but recently I've been thinking of sitting out of the presidential election. (I know, you are now either fainting dead away or clapping with glee.)  The recent JP Morgan Chase incident has given me pause.  The only thing the banks learned from the financial meltdown is they have a Sugar Daddy in...us...the taxpayers.  The role of the bank is to make money for shareholders...any way they can.  And, that is exactly what Jamie Dimon was doing.  Sure JP Morgan Chase lost $2 billion but what the hell...we'll be here to rescue them because the are "too big to fail".  For all the good the president has done there is this lack of a bully pulpit.  Sometimes "spineless" comes to mind.  But, if you think Governor Mitt  Romney would be any different.  Nah...  Sad huh?  Here's the sad story from my friends at the Huffington Post.

This Ain't Corny

In Iowa we've got jobs and farmers have cash.  Agricultural manufacturing can't find enough workers and farmers have been buying up everything from land to equipment.  Why?  The price of corn has been over $6 a bushel for over a year.  So, if you've got 1,000 acres and your yield is 180 bu. per acre your gross (at today's price of $6.10) is $1,098,000. That could all change if the USDA projection is correct.  They are saying we'll have a 2 billion bushel corn surplus this year.  If that holds we could see the price drop to $4.22 per bu. Given the same numbers that's a drop of nearly $400,000 in gross income...per farm. Here is the full story from my friend Dan Piller at the Des Moines Register.

Twin Peaks in Des Moines

I'm forbidden to eat at Hooters.  I suspect it's because the chicken wings are not kosher.  However, there may be hope on the horizon.  The other day I was driving in the "Western Suburb" of Clive and what do I...spy?  A new place is opening up on University called Twin Peaks.  The sign says, "Eats - Drinks - Scenic Views".  I sorta like all three and I'm especially fond of the visual nature of things...like The Grand Tetons.  Anyway, my Bride has never heard of Twin Peaks and maybe...just maybe...the wings will be kosher.  I'll let you know.

Today is Mother's Day and I'm one lucky guy.  I get to celebrate with my Mom who will be 92 next month.  I am grateful...so very grateful.  How is she doing?  I'll let you watch this video:

Politics, Sex, Religion & More - SMC October 16, 2011

Occupy Everything...

I've been highly amused by the media (and others) trying to figure out what the Occupy Movement is all about.  We read, see and hear things like, "They don't seem to have a clear set of grievances." or, "This leaderless group of hippies is really a snapshot of losers who won't work and hate America."   I'm old...so I remember another time in the 60's and 70's when citizens banded together to institute change.  Because many, then (and now), didn't wear suits or hold an elected position we got the push back of "The Silent Majority" and that led us to a stark polarization which is still with us.  Here's the deal:  The "Occupy Movement" is about feeling powerless.  It's about frustration, corporate and private greed and it's about anger at a system that isn't working...unless you happen to be among the "knighted political class".  One other thing...it's spreading. Mayor Frank Cownie

The mayor of Des Moines made some points this past week when he invited the Occupy Iowa to use a city park and averted having his police department being kept busy arresting protesters camped on the Iowa Statehouse grounds.  Mayor Cownie is an interesting guy who is comfortable hob-knobing with the 1% as well as the 99%.  While some Occupy Iowa members grumbled that they had bowed to Governor "For Life" Branstad, whose administration refused to extend their permit, this allows the group to focus on the larger issues of the movement.  Smart.  Here's the story from our friends at Bleeding Heartland.

Speaking of The Des Moines Register (Wait...I didn't)

I had a delightful conversation this week with Joanne Boeckman who covers business news for the suburbs of Des Moines.  We talked about consumer trends and how retail needs to change to...survive in this economy, or any.  We also shared "Mom Stories".  Fun stuff and thanks for the call.

Speaking of Mom...

She is settling in and doing quite well.  We'd been after her to move to the Des Moines Metro for years.  Last month she sold her home, packed up some (lots) of stuff and came home.  At 91 she is enjoying having family close by and we're enjoying the heck out of that.  The 5th Commandment is to "Honor your father and mother..." and I figure the two or three hours a day I get to spend with her is not only the right thing...but a blessing.  By the way...any idea why it is said that this is the "hardest" of all the commandments?  Go ahead...love to hear your thoughts.

SEX!!

I really don't have anything pressing.  Oh wait, here's one.  Did you hear that a farmer in Ireland told Rihanna to put her clothes back on?  Seems she was filming a video...wearing uhm...  Here's the story from our friends at ABC News.

Obama Is Done...

I've been watching something and thinking the anti-President Obama group might be getting ahead of themselves.  Seems the "mortally wounded president" out-raised all of the GOP contenders in the Third Quarter.  That's...all of the Republicians...put together.  Final reports to the Federal Election Commission were due yesterday but an early report by our friend Jason Clayworth of the Des Moines Register indicated the president out-raised the GOP by...millions.  Here is that story.

Iowa GOP Not Conservative Enough

If you thought last year was fun, just wait until the 2011/2012 Iowa Legislative Session cranks up.  Look for folks, like my BFF Windsor Heights House Republician Chris "Hey Where Is My Newsletter?" Hagenow to bend more sharply to the wacky right. How/Why?  Well...here's just a small taste from our friends at Bleeding Heartland.  I'm no fan of GOP Senate Minority Leader Paul "No Time" McKinley but I've got a feeling folks like State Senator Bill "Out to Get Him" Dix, Matt "Rising Star" Whitaker, Governor "For Life" Terry Branstad's legal council Brenna "Tom Miller is a Commie" Findley will all have an impact on my once "moderate" BFF.  I tend to worry about stuff like that and looking forward to the "crazy season" to begin.

Say Cheese!

One of the neat things about living in Iowa is the wide variety of local foods available at even the grocery store chains.  Where once all you could find were offerings from Kraft...we now get to choose from small farm goodies like Milton Cheese hand crafted by the Musser Family in Southeast Iowa.  Found this at the Urbandale Hy-Vee and it is....yummy!  Now, back to our regularly scheduled program.

Dwelling In A Booth...

It's been feeling a bit like the Occupy Movement in our backyard.  Last week on Wednesday night we ushered in Sukkot the Jewish Festival of Booths. (That's the Cliff Notes version.)  For several days prior we were busy building our Sukkah and hoping the wind and rain would hold off.  Wouldn't you know it.  No measurable rain in our area for a month and Wednesday it...pours.  Cleared off in time for us to say the blessings and dwell for a bit in our "new digs".   My bride has decided to add some decor (lights) and later this evening we'll host a gathering of family members.  What a great holiday.  (Told you there would be some "religion" here.)

Gilad Shalit & Israel

We are told that on Tuesday Sgt. Gilad Shalit will be freed by the Arab Terrorists in Gaza who have held him captive for five years.  The deal is an exchange for 1,000 prisoners, many of whom are convicted murderers, of Israeli citizens.  Five years...no visits, no Red Cross...five years.  Tensions in Israel are high.  Some families who have had sons, daughters, wives, husbands, grand-parents murdered by the convicted Arabs are outraged...and some are not.  IF this "deal" holds and Gilad is released nothing will change...  The mighty Arab nations will continue to hate Israel, the Jews will be blamed for...everything and most people just won't "get it".  Wonder if President Obama might release Jonathan Pollard...another example of horrable injustice.  Nah...he's Jewish.

Tuesday is Trump Day

I didn't want to leave you with a dark story...so here's something that should make you chuckle a bit.  Michele "My Gal" Bachmann will be in Perry, Iowa with Donald "Birther" Trump this coming Tuesday.  It's supposed to be about "economic issues facing families and business".  No doubt "The Donald" can relate.  Oh my.

Spent the Week...WORKING!

The usual amount of gossip is down a bit today as I spent most of the week working on some time sensitive projects.  Maybe that's the ticket...stay busy and out of trouble?

Julian Rose

My friend Julian (middle) came back to Des Moines this week.  Julian is a gifted jeweler from London who, while he has lived in New York City, Beverly Hills, the Cayman Islands and Miami...prefers...Des Moines.  He came by for dinner and conversation with some other friends, Sid and Susan.  It was great to catch up on his life and some of the exciting things he's been up to.  Told us he is trying to find a way to move back to the Des Moines Metro, "I just love life here.  The people and the culture are fantastic."  Hope you make it back my friend.  Did you know there are only 55,000 people who live on the Cayman Islands? 

Here Come the Mummies

Last Sunday...what the final day of the Iowa State Fair.  The eleven-day run turned out over a million people.  At the Grandstand that night we had Janet Jackson who burned the house down...and set a record of $60 for a ticket.  Meanwhile loads of people got to see Here Come the Mummies at the A&E state for...free.  I started this video 90 minutes before we had a "mummy sighting".

The Texas Pole Tax

For those of you heading to Texas and wanting to take in a little exotic dancing, you'll still have to fork over the $5 per person tax.  This past week the Texas Supreme Court upheld the "pole tax" and said that this was not an attempt to abridge First Amendment rights.  The Court did say that the tax was not intended to surpress expression in nude dancing but was directed at "...the secondary effects of nude dancing when alcohol is consumed."  Wonder what that might...be?    Here is the full story from our friends at the New York Times.

Speaking of Taxes...

Looks like plans are moving forward to increase the tax Iowans pay at the pump by ten-cents a gallon.  The reason, the proponents say, is to keep the roads in Iowa...drivable.  The last time the gas tax went up was in 1989 and the governor then was....oh, let me think for a moment.  Wait, it's coming to me...  Yes, Governor "For Life" Terry Branstad.  Deja vu....   Here is the story from our friends at the Des Moines Register.  By the way, the Chicago Tribune reported the majority of people at the Des Moines forum were in favor of raising the gas tax.  We are told..."jobs".  See, sometimes my Republican friends do raise taxes.

Iowa Eggs

Here we go again.  You might remember that last year hundreds became ill because they were eating eggs from Iowa which happened to be contaminated with salmonila.  That incident resulted in half a billion Iowa eggs being recalled.  Clark Kauffman of the Des Moines Register has a story in the paper this morning that all is not well with Iowa egg production.  In fact, says the paper, the troubles are mounting.  Iowa leads the nation in egg production...this is not a positive story for us.
