Long before the sun comes up on Sunday Morning I get to reflect on the political news that you may have seen, or missed, all laced with my commentary. Why sleep when you can enjoy a steaming hot cup of Sunday Morning Coffee. Let's go!

I Did It

I'm writing this long, long before "45" gathers you together around your video box and tells you he was responsible for taking out the head of ISIS. He did it. Of course back in 2012 all "45" could do was author anti Obama tweets saying that the then president should not take credit for the killing of Bin Laden. For example on October 22, 2012 he wrote: Stop congratulating Obama for killing Bin Laden. The Navy Seals killed Bin Laden. In total over that day there were no less than 8 tweets...saying about the same thing.

But that...was then. 

Nancy Pelosi

Yesterday about 700 people crowded into Sheslow Auditorium at Drake University for "A Conversation with Nancy Pelosi". It was an event put together by the Polk County Democratic Party. And, frankly, it was a major event. Consider that the Speaker of the House came to Des Moines to answer questions posed by attendees rather than stand and give a speech was remarkable. Following introductions by county chair Sean Bagniewski Congresswomen Cindy Axne spoke about the efforts she and her fellow members have been working on including over 400 bills passed but yet to be taken up by the Senate.

She answered questions for about ninety minutes. Including what led up to that photo of her standing up to "45" which the White House released following that abrupt meeting. She spoke to the efforts of the House to improve the lives of working American families. Such as the move to lower the cost of prescription drugs, end dark money in politics, combat voter suppression, and get health care costs in line. 

One of the lines, that I thought was exceptional, was when she quoted Thomas Paine by saying, "The time has found us...". She then spoke to how the unity of so many people from so many different backgrounds, races, religions and lifestyles have formed an organization committed to unity and to the mission of improving the lives of working
families.

Yep, it was pretty good.

But NOTHING like this "just happens". Here are the volunteers and staff from the Polk County Democrats that made this happen. (You can click to enlarge.) Thank you all!

Meanwhile in Wisconsin

You don't have to travel too far to see how folks tend to forget the past. A photo taken this past spring in Baraboo, Wisconsin appears to show dozens of high school students giving the Nazi salute. On the, now deleted, social media post one student remarked, "We even got the black kid to throw it up." At least one student is seen making the OK gesture, which some associate with white supremacists.

Your parents must be so very proud...and I'm sure the colleges and universities that you've applied to will all take this in stride.  Not to mention future employers. Here is the full story from CBS News.

Long Term Care in Iowa

Residents in long term care facilities in Iowa are under threat...once again. It appears that the six professionals who work as investigators with the State Long-Term Care Ombudsman Cindy Pederson are going to be replaced with volunteers. If you remember, a couple of years ago the vehicles used by the professional investigators were taken away and long-term care complaints and concerns were done over the phone. Yeah...that. In speaking to one of the professionals I was told that in a year this one investigator would receive up to 700 complaints.

For those of you not aware of how the system works. When a complaint or concern is generated by a nursing home resident or family to the Ombudsman an investigator is assigned the case. The case then is handled outside of the punitive area of the Department of Inspections and Appeals. The resolution of the issue doesn't hit the negative reports of the facility. It's a system that has worked well for years but now it appears the State wishes to diminish the effort with, what can best be described, a cost saving measure.

When it comes to the most vulnerable of our citizens...the young and the old Iowa pays lots of lip-service but little in the way of actually care.

Did You Know?

In doing some research on the topic of something called "Right to Repair" I was shocked to learn how Iowa fails it's citizens and small businesses all across the state. Here is the short story: Manufacturers of everything from agricultural equipment to refrigerators and cell phones hold the secret to repairing those devices. That means that small businesses, unless they are "authorized dealers" do not have the right to repair stuff.  In one example a person purchased a refrigerator that two years later failed to work. He went online and ordered a part. Once installed he was instructed to "enter the code" to allow it to work. He had no "code" so called the manufacturer who told him he had no right to that code...even though he purchased the product and the part. 

Some time ago three members of the Iowa House introduced a bill to allow small businesses and owners to repair their purchased products but every lobbyist from car dealers to manufacturers opposed the legislation and it died in committee.  The reason?  Manufacturers make millions on repairs. They and their shareholders would hate to see that income erode. Or...so it seems.

Horror in West Des Moines!

This week Iowa House member Representative Kristin Sunde (D-WDM) had a really great idea for a fund raiser. She put together a Halloween themed event where adults and kids dressed up in costumes. It was not only inventive but also big fun.

You know, sometimes you've got to hand it to these creative types who not only seek to actually represent their constituents but raise election dollars in an inventive way.

Interesting Times in Windsor Heights

Never a dull moment here when it comes to city politics. Last week former Windsor Heights City Administrator Elizabeth Hanson filed a lawsuit following her termination in April. She is suing the city and Windsor Heights City Council members Threase Harms, Zac Bales-Henry, Mike Jones, Joseph Jones and Michael Loffredo. 

From the reporting of KCCI: "The lawsuit indicates Harms spent substantial personal capital making city employees' lives more difficult by attempting to undermine them and berating and bullying them at council meetings. It also says Harms created a work environment sufficiently hostile that two separate complaints had been filed by employees.

Hanson said she believes her contract was not renewed in retaliation for supporting the complaints."

There are also allegations about improper meetings taking place outside of the open meetings law. 

It's sort of a mess with the city elections coming up. Harms is seeking a second term while Bales-Henry decided not to run.

All of this has resulted in former City Councilman Tony Timm to mount a write-in campaign. Timm ran for mayor in 2017 but was defeated by anti-sidewalk champion Dave Burgess. It seems, by the phone calls and messages that I've gotten, that there is great interest in the still developing campaign.  Mr. Timm, who is a Democrat, will be speaking to the Windsor Heights Democrats meeting later this week.  Stay tuned.

Partly Personal

Later today I'll be joining other activists who are committed to reducing gun violence in Iowa. There is an active working group formed by the Interfaith Alliance of Iowa. As always it's vital that we turn faith into action.

I sat at my keyboard this morning long before daylight and tried to put sense into some of the things we've seen transpire over the past seven days. It's difficult and disturbing and I am simply amazed at how some, like lemmings, choose to follow "45" into the chaos. I truly don't get it and, perhaps, never will. On that happy note let's get started, Sunday Morning Coffee is served...

"Let's Have A Party!"

Inside the mind of "45":

"Hey, Mick! I've got this great idea! Actually, I had it when I was over in some county this year where lots of other very rich people had a meeting. You all know that it's not been an easy road for me. I've lost millions, haven't paid taxes for decades, made up stories about how wealthy I am so I could get more loans...it's what I do. Anyway, things down in Florida haven't gone so well. No, not Mar a Lago, that other shithole joint The Doral. Been losing tons of cash. So, why not throw that G-String, you get what I'm sayin' Mick, party down at my place near Miami?  Hell, I won't have to spend a dime! We'll let those suckers from those other shithole countries pony up their cash. Can you see it Mick? We'll have all kinds of publicity. There will be babes, plenty of babes. I'm tellin' ya Mick it's a winner. It's beautiful. Now, get yourself out there and let the world know we're on top of things. Love ya Mick!"

Something tells me that can't be far from the truth...

Rick Perry Runs Out of Energy

No, really. Energy Secretary Rick Perry isn't tired he literally ran out of his office trying to escape his involvement in that whole messy Ukraine deal. Of course Mr. Perry said all of this has nothing at all to do with the "Three Amigo" dealings and the congressional subpoena he ignored. Seems that Rick couldn't overcome the fact that his boss threw him under the bus two weeks ago when "45" blamed the Ukraine phone call on him.

The Texas former governor is also the latest in a series of cabinet officials who’ve exited under a cloud of scandal. The list includes controversial figures such as former Labor Secretary Alex Acosta, former EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt, former HHS Secretary Tom Price, former Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke, and former VA Secretary David Shulkin.

This "Draining the Swamp" takes time my friends...

Elijah Cummings

This was a tough week for many of us who looked on the life of Congressman Elijah Cummings (D-MD) as heroic. His voice, his faith his spirit are now a memory. Born in poverty he ascended to the halls of power never forgetting his commitment to those who have little. Little power, little money, little justice...little.

He took the wrath of "45" all summer long as the president described the African-American Cummings as “racist” and “a brutal bully,” charging that he “has done a very poor job” representing his constituents and “has failed badly!”

"45" also characterized Cummings’ predominantly black, Baltimore-based congressional district as “a disgusting, rat and rodent infested mess” where “no human being” would want to live.

Some Americans reviere class and dignity. Others...not so much. 

Meanwhile In Iowa

It was a trifecta of love. Last week, according to the Des Moines Register, about 100 people gathered to hear Sen. Joni Ernst (R-IA), Gov. Kim Reynolds (R-IA) and Iowa GOP Chair Jeff Kaufmann heap praise on "45". The governor said, "He really pays attention to Iowa and listens." Then the two women recalled their personal trauma. One dealing with an abusive relationship and the other about the abuse of alcohol. It would seem that two, out of the three story lines, might actually be true. Jeff was there for support.

Speaking of Sen. Ernst...the reports are in and Democratic Candidate Teresa Greenfield out raised Joni in the money department.

It's History Damn It!

Last week Democratic Candidate for the U.S. Senate Eddie Mauro wrote a letter to Gary Slater who is the manager of the Iowa State Fair, and from Missouri, asking if it was appropriate that the Fair Board rents out the grounds for a gun show where folks can buy armor piercing bullets, ammonium nitrate (bomb making stuff) Nazi flags and other fun SS gear. 

Mr. Slater basically responded, "It our damn land we'll do what the hell we want to do with who we want to do business with!" Or, something like that. 

Many of my white Christian friends looked at the story and passed it all off as "Hey, it's history! Don't you libs get it? We're just remembering history!" 

Yeah, with bomb making stuff, illegal bullets and a nod to that wonderful time period when other white Christians murdered millions of Jews because they were...inferior.

I totally get it. 

By the way...if you can see through your hood...I'd recommend this book. It's how "history" treated some families and how, at age four, Michael Bornstein survived. "Survivors Club - The True Story of a Very Young Prisoner of Auschwitz". And you can listen to part of his story here.

RAGBRAI

It's starting to smell. Last week we experienced the non-political reality of how divided our world is as the entire RAGBRAI crew of 16 people quit and formed a new bicycle ride across Iowa.  The new ride just so happens to take place during the same week at RAGBRAI 2020.

It was all wrapped in how the long-time RAGBRAI director T.J. Juskiewicz didn't like to be "throttled" with regard to the saga of Carson King. He said that the "RAGBRAI Nation" wanted to know if the ride supported the outing of King who made some racist comments  when King was 16 years old and that Gannet, the parent company of the Des Moines Register, kept him from speaking his mind.

So, Juskiewicz quit and on the same day announced the new ride complete with a website, registration information and more.

Now the bicycle community is "divided" on which ride to...ride.

Clearly there is more to this story than a guy being told, by his employer, to stick to the script. And, it's easy to hate the Register and even easier to hate Gannett and the bean-counters who have ruined journalism. So, why not start a new  paper? Partly Personal

I may actually get this out BEFORE 9AM!  Well, maybe. (Nope...missed it!)

We're winding down the festival of Sukkot which ends tonight at sundown. They, we Jews, launch into the holiday of Shemini Atzeret or an "extra day" and then Simchat Torah...the rejoicing of the Torah...as we start reading the five books again from the beginning. It's what we do...

Yesterday I was out knocking on doors for both my campaign as well as helping out my friend Ryan Crane who is running for the West Des Moines City Council for an at-large position. Ryan will make an excellent City Councilman...no, really. He is passionate about his community and dedicated to progressive values and economic development for everybody. 

What is astounding are the number of people whom I spoke with who have NO idea there is an election on November 5th much less who the candidates are. Over the next several days I'm joining others in The Great Ballot Chase as we call voters across Polk County encouraging them to vote early and/or get them to request an absentee ballot. If we all work at it we can make a huge difference.

Sunday Morning Coffee 22 September 2019

Welcome to Sunday Morning Coffee my weekly piece on some of the political stories you may have seen, or missed, and laced with my commentary. Heads up, this is going to be a shorter cup...I have two events to cover today. One is the youth forum at a local high school with several presidential candidates and the other is a health care conversation with Bernie Sanders. Hey, always working and learning it would seem.

The President of the United States

We all know "45" is dirty and I'm not going to spend a bunch of time on him. It's enough to say this is the most corrupt person, next to Andrew Johnson, to ever become president. It is a shame and disgrace that this person is the leader of our great nation. We've never seen anything like it and, hopefully, never will again. In an interview, just yesterday, I was asked what I thought were the two most pressing issues that we need to address. I said that health care and repairing our standing on the world stage are critical for moving forward. One addresses the root cause for financial ruin and the other addresses how this president has trashed our reputation world-wide.

Bill de Blasio

I may have been the only person on the planet to have been dismayed that Mayor de Blasio pulled out of the 2020 race. I met him twice over the past several months and enjoyed the conversation and the interviews. I also know how much the NYC media hate him. Saw it first hand when they lied about an event he was at in Des Moines and listened to them "bad-mouth" the mayor when the microphones were off. I remember I asked the reporter about it and she said, "It's what we do in New York."  Anyway, the Polk County Steak Fry had one less candidate speaking yesterday.

The Polk County Steak Fry

It was a big deal. A really big deal that took organizers months of work to pull off. That a county party could put together an event with 16 presidential candidates and feed nearly 12,000 people was extraordinary. An army of Democrats volunteered to do everything from parking cars to serving the food, to cleaning up the tables, to transporting people around Water Works Park. It was a tremendous success. The folks in this photo Judy Downs, Sean Bagniewski, Peter Crane and Lindsay Paulson were the leadership team for the event and they were joined by hundreds more. It was a true team effort. This was the third year since the Polk County Democrats resurrected the Tom Harkin Steak Fry and it was truly the best yet. Thank you to everyone who worked their ass off to make this happen. People will talk about it for...at least a year...right?

Mental Health in Iowa

Is on life support. Today, in an exclusive interview with Peggy Huppert of NAMI-Iowa you'll learn how under funded and convoluted our mental health care system really is. While we blame everything from mass shootings to domestic abuse on mental health wouldn't you think we might seriously start to properly fund and pay for mental health care?  One would think. The 24 minutes conversation will air in on News/Talk 1540 KXEL this afternoon at about 2:35PM Central. You can hear it by going to www.KXEL.com or, if you have a smart speaker, "Hey, Google/Alexa, play KXEL Radio!".  If you miss it you'll be able to catch it this week on my newscast, "Insight on Business the News Hour".  This really is an important issue and serves as the basis for my policy on mental health in Iowa.

Jack Hatch

After several weeks of push polling former gubernatorial candidate and former state senator Jack Hatch has entered the race for Mayor of Des Moines. Clearly well funded, Jack has the backing of some very influential brothers, Mitch Henry and Joe Henry. I saw Mitch working the Jack Hatch Booth at the Polk County Steak Fry yesterday...in full campaign mode. I'm not sure Mayor Frank Cownie has faced this serious a challenge in the past. I know and like both of these guys and I think...based on the funding alone...Hatch might just pull this off. His campaign video was well done, his social media is excellent and he is a known person. Stay tuned. 

Partly Personal

Told you this would be short today...I was pleased to have the opportunity to volunteer for the Polk County Steak Fry yesterday. In past years I was there to cover the event. This time it was all about taking a cue from my fellow Polk County Democrats and getting involved by helping out. Did two hours in the massive food tent cleaning up plates and tables, taking trash away and re-setting chairs for the next wave of guests. It was done under the watchful eye of Suzette "Don't Throw The Steak Knives Away" Jensen. Thank you for everything! Then a bit of talking to voters and mentors. Had a great conversation with my friend former Governor and Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack...who told me his bride Christie also enjoyed "call time". I know...we're odd.  Thanks for the tips.

Then it was to the stage to participate with other Polk County Democratic Candidates seeking to flip a ton of seats. An interview with Cenk Uygur of The Young Turks about Iowa and my senate race, a brief conversation with Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ) and Sen. Chris Coons (D-DE). Then my friend, and I believe I can call him that, John Bessler and I had a great conversation about friends, family and (of course) his wife Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN). Iowa Democratic Chair Troy Price gave me a few minutes to explain the approval of the DNC to the supplemental caucus location plan for 2020. That also will be heard, first, today on News/Talk 1540 KXEL in the 2pm hour. I also learned that my friend Cal Woods is the latest entry into the 2020 race for U.S. Senate...that makes five folks...and he'll also be on with me in the near future.  

Then, as I was about to leave, Scott Thompson said he was short drivers for the golf carts that shuttled folks from the event to their cars or waiting busses. I asked for a key and he flung one at me. So, in the closing hours of the event I was able to meet a ton of people who appreciated the 2.3 mile ride to their vehicles or the front gate so they could call a Lyft. 

I'd do it all again. What a wonderful time...it will be long remembered for the hundreds of volunteers who made it so. Thank you all!

Sunday Morning Coffee 25 August 2019

Just half-a-cup of Sunday Morning Coffee today. I'm working on policy statements...several...and that has taken my focus off of the National Embarrassment that is the current President of the United States. He's in Europe...maybe he should stay.  Let's dive into just a couple of things that you may have heard...or perhaps missed.

Czar of Business

Last week "45' told U.S. corporations that he demands they leave China and bring their manufacturing to the United States. He actually "ordered" them to do that. Never mind that he really can't do that and the 1977 law he has pointed to would need congressional approval to declare a national emergency that would then, perhaps, force private corporations to pack up and move. But, let's say they did move back the the U.S.  Two questions:

• Who is going to do the work? Currently we have 7.5 million open jobs in the U.S. and only 6 million people seeking employment;
• You willing to pay double for your ________? No, didn't think so.

If anybody is moving anywhere it will be to Southeast Asia or India. Maybe then THEY will become the "Enemy of America"?

He also asked you to figure out which is the biggest "enemy" of the United States, President Xi Jinping or Fed Chair Jerome Powell. The president is miffed that the Fed didn't announce another interest rate cut, something that he has lobbied for, after last week's meeting in Wyoming.

I don't want to bore you with the details...however...should there be an economic downturn (recession) and the Fed has cut interest rates to the bone there is little it can do to "right the ship". We will have used all our tools.

Other than another tax cut. With the deficit already touching $1 trillion dollars (something that the GOP screamed about during the Obama Administration when he enacted measures to stave off a depression early in the Great Recession) that doesn't seem to be a smart move. The guy has no clue...zero.

Weary.

Tariffs and You

Now that "45" has determined that the trade war with China should escalate further the tariffs imposed and about to be imposed are going to hit your pocketbook. Until this time consumers have been spared which retail companies have, mostly, figured out ways to absorb the new taxes. But, no longer. A study out last week from JP Morgan says that the new tariffs will cost the average U.S. consumer about $1,000 to $1,500 a year. That, my friends, takes away any benefit you may (or may not) have seen with the 2017 tax cut. 

It's just...money.

All You Need To Know

Now that Sen. Charles Grassley (R-IA) and Gov. Kim Reynolds (R-IA) have been named as "honorary co-chairs" for the re-election of "45" is all you need to  know about these people who have turned their backs on the citizens of Iowa. Meanwhile where is Sen Joni Ernst (R-IA)?  Oh, that's right...she has a tough election facing her in 2020 but you would think her slavish devotion to "45" would have gotten her a spot...too?

Public Policy Issues

While others may run on general themes regarding overall policy. I'm thinking a more direct method would be to foster a discussion on truly ground-breaking public policy ideas that will truly make a difference. Ideas that will boost the quality of life for everyday working Iowa families. 

But, here is the deal. The policies can't be "wonky". But must be clear and concise answers to the things that plague our citizens.  So, sorry for the short cup of coffee.  That's what I've been working on last night and early this morning. It takes some time.

Polk County Steak Fry

It's is going to be...an event! From what I understand the Polk County Democrats Steak Fry has already generated thousands of folks who will come and celebrate the work of our local county party. I hear that we've sold tickets to nearly every state in the nation AND we'll have lots of guests from other countries. If you have not yet purchased your ticket...HERE IS THAT LINK. Partly Personal

This was my weekend attending to the spiritual needs of my congregation in Mason City, Iowa. Each month I get to travel there for services, a community bible study program, visit the hospitals, nursing homes and private homes of the folks who are affiliated and with Adas Israel one of only ten active Jewish congregations in Iowa.

It's always incredible and moving time to spend quality time in the work of caring for the spiritual needs and questions of people there. I'm grateful for the 30+ years I've been doing this. And even more grateful for the lessons I learn along the way. 

This week I'll sit down with Congresswoman Cindy Axne (D-IA) for a far ranging conversation about her work in Washington D.C. So looking forward to that.  And, yes, we'll share.

Like they say, "It ain't the heat, it's the humidity!" and we've got plenty of that this morning! Time for politics and religion the two things that, more than others, impact our life and I get to share that each week here with Sunday Morning Coffee. So much going on...let's get started.

Me, Me, Me

The petulant child that serves at the 45th president was at it again. On trips to Dayton and El Paso it wasn't about comfort and caring...it was all, and always is, about him. He whined when the public talked truth to power and commented about the photo of him and FLOTUS with a newly orphaned child giving "thumbs up". He was angry when word got out that many who were injured in the shootings didn't want to see him. And after conciliatory remarks by the mayor of Dayton, Ohio he shot out an angry tweet that did not, in any way, resemble the comments by the mayor. Tired of winning yet? I am so very done with this guy...but that is nothing new. (Photo Credit - CNN)

Speaking of Orphans

Last week Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) rounded up 680 workers at chicken processing plants in Mississippi. It was the largest single raid since the Agriprocessors raid in Postville, Iowa back in
2008 where ICE arrested 400 workers. However, there seems to be a major difference. In Postville the Agriprocessors manager, Rabbi Shalom Rubashkin was also arrested, tried and spent time in prison. That ain't gonna happen in Mississippi. Why? Could it be because none of the owners or managers there appear to be Jewish? 

It's unlikely that any of the people that actually hire undocumented workers will ever be charged in the Mississippi raid. It's just not done. How do we know? A study by Syracuse University looked at the number of prosecutions against employers and they found that from April 28 to March 29 of 2019 only 11 individuals, not companies, were prosecuted for hiring undocumented workers. At the same time during that period more than 120,000 undocumented immigrants were charged for illegal entry or illegal reentry.

Other than the fact that employers face little punishment when they hire undocumented workers what's the reason they do so? Simple: economics.

Undocumented workers can be paid less and employers know they won't complain so the "Chicken Gang" in Mississippi gets cheap labor from folks who are not going to complain and profits go up. Pretty simple... Sort of like Mississippi in 1859.

Workers Wanted!

Dear disgruntled men and women who feel that the reason you can not get a piece of the pie because brown people are taking away your jobs. I happen to know of 680 open positions available...right now. You would have to relocate to Mississippi but I hear it's really pretty there.

Wall Street & Guns

It was a lousy week on Wall Street. But, what the hell do we care, most of us don't care seeing how we're not loaded down with "blue chips". However one segment of the market did well. Ready? Companies that manufacture guns did pretty well last week. They always do after a mass murder by domestic terrorists. The reason? Folks will buy more guns because they fear there will be restrictions. But, not to worry, that ain't gonna happen and the stocks will realign. See what you learn here?

Thoughts and Prayers vs. Action

Last week I was invited to attend a gathering hosted by the Iowa Interfaith Alliance that was held at the First Christian Church in the Drake University area. I was a bit hesitant. What I didn't want to do was go to yet another gathering where we would hear words of comfort, sing a couple of songs, offer up prayer and leave feeling better about ourselves. 

Imagine my surprise when the nearly 200 people did not meet in the sanctuary but in the social hall. It was standing room only as Connie Ryan from the Iowa Interfaith Alliance and Rep. Ako Abdul-Samad (D-Des Moines) led the group in creating several action plans to deal with gun violence in Iowa. It was refreshing. Some of the final points included:

• Work to defeat pro-gun legislators who continue to defy public opinion on gun legislation and in fact continue to loosen gun restrictions;
• Support legislation that restricts the sale of military style rifles and high capacity magazines;
• Work on informing the general public as to the importance of "common sense gun legislation;
• Unite with marginalized citizens to build coalitions that uphold basic human rights.

It was time well spent. Now the challenge is to continue to mobilize and get stuff done. I know I signed up.

Time to "Shuck Chapman"

This weekend was the Annual Adel Sweetcorn Festival. Thousands of folks descended on the small town just west of Des Moines to take in music, a huge parade and eat...sweetcorn. But one thing was missing. What Democrat in Senate District 10 will be willing to take on the pro-gun state senator there Sen. Jake Chapman (R-Adel). Who, just this past week, voiced his opposition to any sort of "red-flag" legislation where friends and family members can alert authorities about specific behaviors that might lead to gun violence. Ya know, sort of like the grandmother in Lubbock, Texas who alerted authorities about her grandson and the weapons he was collecting. They arrested him.

But, Jake doesn't want that sort of thing to come to Iowa. I figure it's time to "Shuck Chapman". I reached out to Bryce Smith the Chair of the Dallas County Democrats who told me there is an individual that is "considering" a run against Chapman.  I've just given you a campaign slogan.  You are welcome. Speaking of Gun Violence

There was something very special that happened in Clear Lake, Iowa on Friday. Campaigns were in town for the Annual Democratic Wing Ding. Before the event Beto O'Rourke, who skipped the event to stay with his community in El Paso, asked Rep. Ako Abdul-Samad (D-Des Moines) to lead a moment of silence. Candidates and campaigns came together for this emotionally charged event. If you have not seen the video you must...here is a link to the Twitter account of Beto O'Rourke. They have pinned that video to the top of their page. But, promise to come back.  

The Great Iowa State Fair

I've been going to this celebration for years and part of the adventure has always been to volunteer at the Iowa Democratic Booth in the Varied Industries Building. Usually only a couple of folks show up, we're doing voter registration on some paper and talking up candidates in what was a pretty bland booth.

That has all changed. Dozens of volunteers sporting shirts saying, "Democrats Have 20/20 Vision" were signing up voters at a frenzied pace. The booth is a testimony of positive messages welcoming immigrants, people of color, people of diversity...people. It was a charged atmosphere.

I hear that the Iowa Democratic Party may just offer these shirts as a fund-raising opportunity in the near future. Stay tuned. 

Public Policy Time

Time for working families to catch a break. If you are still with me let's talk, for a moment, about the horrible idea of "Right to Work" legislation. It's time that Iowa overturn what has become a baseball bat used against employees. The GOP does a great job in naming things to make you think something is in your benefit. Sort of like the "Jobs and Tax Cut Bill" that awarded the mighty with more money. The same is true of "Right to Work" it is not "just employment" it is one-sided employment. It means that you have zero rights in the workplace. It means that your boss can fire you for reason...or no reason at all. It limits your right to organize and it removes your opportunity to make more money.

I know there are more workers and employees than there are employers. It's time we end this hurtful policy and create a more even field moving forward. It once was common that employers held to three basic principals: 1) Profit, 2) Community and 3) Employees. We've seen what happens when companies focus on only one of those issues. It's time for real wins for families. That is something I'll work toward over the next year and I hope you'll join me.

Partly Personal

Last week, during the Great Iowa State Fair, a lovely young lady by the name of Brianna stopped me in the Varied Industries Building and said, "My I ask you a question?" Being the sort of person who attempts to be helpful and open to folks I said I'd be happy to answer. She said, "Are you going to heaven?" I looked at her in the eye and answered calmly answered "Yes."

She said, "That is so wonderful that you have accepted Jesus Christ as your Lord and personal Savior!" My answer was, "Well, Brianna, I've not. I'm Jewish and we've got a slightly different take on that subject."

What ensued was a fifteen minute, rather respectful, conversation about the Torah her Bible and people of other faiths. While she accused me, and the Jews, of going against "The Word" and said Buddhists were idol worshipers and denied any knowledge of the Orah Torah or what exactly Isaiah was talking about when he railed against the Hellenized Jews of his day it was a fun interaction. We parted with a handshake and I wished her well as she worked the crowd trying to find "true believers".

Such is life.

Sunday Morning Coffee - 21 July 2019

Just when you thought it couldn't get any worse we have thousands of Americans standing up and shouting, "Send her back!" and people being arrested for saying they would put a bullet in the head of a sitting congresswoman. Brace yourself...it's gonna get worse.  It's Sunday Morning Coffee my weekly look at stories you've seen or missed...all laced with my commentary. It's what I get to do...

Depravity There Isn't Another Word

What is going on in terms of spreading fear and hate coming out of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue is simply depravity. When my friends who are members of the Republican Party can not bring themselves to condemn the sitting president there is only one reason. They agree with him and his message of hate and bigotry. 

It's a marketing message from "45" and it's getting through. Meanwhile the "duck & cover" coming from loyalists is amazing. They use "moral equivalency" saying, "Everybody says racist things." or "One part is just as bad as the other!" or completely lie and say that the GOP never said anything bad about President Obama. Forgetting all the times they stayed quiet or endorsed everything from "birtherism" to saying Obama should go back to Kenya "or wherever". 

Depravity and it's catching on.

Love It or Leave It

The "it" of course if America. This saying was first popularized during the awful days of the 1950's when then Sen. Joseph McCartney (R-WI) and his misguided effort to "...root out the communists who are hiding in plan sight". It was a time of the "Red Scare" and later when people demonstrated against the Vietnam War we were told "Love it or leave it!". (Ironic that the saying is on the "Friendship" church sign in Virginia this past week.)

I take a different view. If you love your nation you have every right to voice your opposition to those who seek to squash the progressive values of our nation. This should be a rally cry for those of us who think health care is a right. Or sho think wage inequity is morally wrong. Or that people, no matter the color of their skin or how they worship (or don't) should be treated with respect. 

Leaving America to the people who spread fear and loathing won't happen because we'll continue to speak up and use our voices to call for justice and our feet to march for equality and our hands to vote in 2020. Keep the fight going.

She Has Not Changed...

A friend of mine pointed me to a story from 2014 when then candidate Joni Ernst railed to a group of conservatives that she would work to repeal the Affordable Care Act, cut the food stamp program and tell "the church" it's their duty to care for people. If you want to read that piece from Church & State here you go. 

She is not Sen. Joni Ernst (R-IA) and her spots have not changed. She is still one of the loudest and more shrill of those calling for the government to shrink from it's responsibility whenever it comes to caring for people.

More money for the war machine and damn the people on food stamps. Never mind that the vast majority of them are elderly and children.

We have a fundamental disagreement. I believe that it is the role of government to care for those people who can not care for themselves. Government should not be handing out buckets of cash to wealthy corporations who have the ability to raise their own funds...thank you very much. 

But it has become who we are. And we see it even in local issues. For example, Facebook just secured another 20 years of property tax exemption in little Altoona, Iowa. And it was done by that city council with zero input from the citizens of that town.  Supporters hail the decision...I think the third of such agreements. Meanwhile the folks who are paying the taxes have no input. Government working for Corporate America...it is the new welfare system. 

Partly Personal

Today is the beginning of something most people know nothing about. It's called The Three Weeks. Observant Jews around the world mark this day as the start of a period of mourning for the loss, not once but twice, of the Temple in Jerusalem. During this time many Jews refrain from entering into contracts, getting married or other joyful events.  It is a time of introspection and consideration of what it is that we can do to uphold the values laid out in the Torah.

I share that with you only to underline the fact that one can be both faithful and progressive. We who are deeply involved in progressive politics often shun talking about our faith. I'm not sure that's a good strategy. It's when we turn away from the values of caring for others, be they "widows, orphans" or "the stranger in our midst" is when we see destruction...and sadness.

Sorry for the lesson...but it's on my mind this morning.

Sunday Morning Coffee - 14 July 2019

Six letters to know this Sunday Morning: ICE and ACA. Welcome to Sunday Morning Coffee my weekly piece about the political stories you have seen or, perhaps, missed all laced with my commentary. It's what I get to do early on Sunday. Let's go!

ICE Raids

The long expected raids by Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers is scheduled to begin this morning. There are ten cities that are said to be targeted. The goal of the administration is to use law enforcement to produce a political narrative that underscores the propaganda that immigrants are a danger to America. Over the past several days the rhetoric about criminals and "following the rule of law" has been a constant GOP drumbeat. Of course all of it is false and in the end we will see families ripped apart, more people in concentration camps. Several cities that have been targeted like Chicago and Denver have already said their law enforcement will not participate.

It is truly sad that the United States is acting more and more like Germany in the 1930's. That is not what our nation is about. But, for some, this action makes for good politics. For years the words "Law and Order" have been racial dog whistles. We're there once again.

ACA and The Courts

The Affordable Care Act, long Public Enemy Number One of the Republicans, may actually be struck down. The administration is backing a legal action that would put a knife in the heart of the ACA and Republicans are not holding back their glee. Never mind that millions will be without health insurance. Never mind that there is not a single plan to replace the Affordable Care Act. This is all about two things: The heartlessness of the GOP because, they really don't care and it's something that is connected to President Obama. Of the two it is Obama that rankles them more than anything. Just this week a source came forward and said the real reason "45" got out of the Iran deal is because the agreement came during the Obama White House...nothing more.

Emotion and News

My day job is in the world of advertising and marketing. We create everything from packaging to television ads for our clients. Been doing this for a very long time and I've always said emotion beats the facts...every time. When you speak to the emotion of a consumer it touches them in a way that cold facts never will. They connect with your product or service. It works. This morning The Hill has and interesting take on emotion and the news. Drawing on the memory of Walter Cronkite who, for just a brief moment while announcing the death of President Kennedy, showed the world emotion. It was something that shocked viewers. News people were to be stoic and direct. The article goes on to say how that has all changed. From Shepard Smith to Rachel Maddow we get emotion from the newscasters. Maybe it's me but...if you would like to read that piece here is a link.  

Democrats - Doing What We Do Best

Here we go...again. While Republicans work, lock step, toward their goals of promoting evil Democrats fight with each other. And now it's the race card being thrown out by Democrats against Democrats.

Meanwhile in New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D-NY) couldn't resist taking a swipe at Mayor Bill de Blasio for being in Iowa while part of New York City experienced a power outage that lasted for several hours. Like de Blasio knew a transformer would blow and should have been there, tool belt on, to restore power...on his own. Come on... 

It's called a circular firing squad and Democrats are really pretty good at it.

Ames and Ross Wilburn

Reynolds, taking a page from the GOP playbook on voter suppression, should be ashamed. But that's how her crowed rolls. We've seen it time and time again and it's time to make voter suppression an issue in the upcoming elections for 2020. Democrats believe in the vote while Republicans are fearful. It's that simple.

Congratulations to Ross who I met several times in his attempt to win the Democratic nomination for governor last cycle. He will make a difference...but he needs help to flip the House and that's where you come in.

Congratulations on Your Raise!

Iowa woke up to a new reality last week as Gov. Kim Reynolds (R-IA) announced a massive 8.6% raise for the private, for-profit firms who now control Medicaid in the state. The reality is that companies have one, and only one goal: Make a profit. That is why they are in business. Anybody who thinks having health care regulated by people who are motivated by profit is a good idea is just plain wacky.

But you know why it gets a pass in Iowa? Because as long as it's "not me" people don't give a damn. If you are snug and cozy and healthy and wealthy what the hell do you care if over 575,000 Iowans aren't? That's the way the game is played. Meanwhile people...people...are suffering. Families are going without care and treatment. Funds are being withheld to providers and the companies who are doing this just got a massive raise.

By the way...check your paycheck. My bet is that you didn't get an 8.6% raise this year.  Or the 8.4% raise these for-profit insurance companies got last year. It's good work, if you can get the job.

The Polk County Steak Fry

Whoa...this is going to be...BIG. I was in a leadership meeting yesterday morning where we got an update on the Polk County Steak Fry to be held on 21 September at Water Works Park in Des Moines. From the report offered up by Lindsay Paulson, who co-chairs events, this year is going to be massive. Several thousand tickets have already been sold and contributions are rolling in. It's something you will not want to miss. Grab your tickets now and join us, along with nearly all the 2020 Democratic presidential candidates and Congresswoman Cindy Axne (D-IA) for this event.  Here is a link for tickets.

Fund Raising Numbers

Speaking of Rep. Cindy Axne (D-IA) the fund raising report is in and she raked in $600,000 in three months for her re-election bid for Iowa's Third Congressional seat.She enters the next quarter with at least $835,000 cash-on-hand available to spend, according to a draft of fundraising numbers she will report to the Federal Election Commission. In total she has raised more than $1 million to date in this election cycle.

Well done. It's going to take that and more to hold on the the seat...something we must do.

Speaking of raising funds Democrat Theresa Greenfield, in one month of campaigning, raised more than $625,000. Talk about impressive.  Figures released by the campaign show the average online contribution was $21 dollars and 85% of contributions were less than $100. 

I have not seen numbers from the other Democrats in the race, Eddie Mauro or Kimberly Graham.

AARP-Iowa and Politics

Iowa really is the epicenter for politics and nothing screams that louder than the very auditious plan rolled out by AARP-Iowa. Tomorrow the 370,000 member organization will launch a five city tour in six days featuring 20 presidential candidates answering question created by its members.  At each stop, Des Moines, Davenport, Cedar Rapids, Sioux City and Council Bluffs four contenders will be given time to answer several question. In addition Brad Anderson the State Director for AARP-Iowa says issue answers will be videotaped for people who are unable to attend. Tomorrow is the first of the events and it's scheduled for the Olmsted Center of Drake University. If you want to hear Brad talk about it, here is a link to that interview which will also air today on News/Talk 1540 KXEL in the second half hour of the broadcast which starts at 2pm Central. 

Partly Personal

As many of you know I've been mulling over a run for the Iowa State Senate in District 22. Nothing in concrete just yet and, should a couple of things come together this next week, you'll be among the first to know. If things work out it will be a Families First campaign. Families in Iowa are suffering...they clearly didn't get a 8.6% raise in pay. The families I've been talking with over the past six months have seen it more difficult to afford health care, school supplies, pay the rent or mortgage and spend time with their kids. We've seen teachers under attack, labor unions pushed to the side and our core values of decency left in the dust.

We have seen what the GOP leadership is focused on and it is not taking care of Iowa families. Their record is clear and it's time to change that. Stay tuned....

Sunday Morning Coffee 7 July 2019

Trying to figure out what to blame this very late edition of Sunday Morning Coffee on...  I've got it.!  Independence Day! Yeah...a holiday in the middle of the week tossed up everything. Actually my Bride and I were up late enjoying a perfect Iowa night.  So gotta blame this on...the weather.  Not to worry, it can handle it!

The Military and "45"

So many things to say about the efforts by "45" to embrace the military on the 4th of July. But let's just leave it at this. There are two reasons why the president spent your tax dollars to do his Salute to America honoring the very military that he dodged out of because of "bone spurs". 1) His base LOVES the military and the might. Just like they love the concentration camps that now are in every state in the union. It's all about power and might makes right. That is not to say others do not appreciate how the military protects and defends but with "45'" there is a deep desire to bow to his base...besides who might take him on for this.  It was a win/win for him. 2) He controls the military. That is the bottom line about this president...he loves controlling others. Be it the military, people he sues, his business deals or people seeking asylum from the horrors of their own nation. Control kids...control.

Jews Arrested in Rhode Island

Last week while we, in Iowa, were watching or walking in parades hundreds of Jews descended on an immigrant concentration camp in Central Falls, Rhode Island and staged a peaceful protest. "Outside the Donald W. Wyatt detention center inmates can be heard from the street...banging on the windows and walls. The mass of people  protesting called out, 'We hear you!"

That was the scene as the Jewish group, Never Again is Now staged, along with others all over the country, peaceful protests against the abusive conditions for migrants and asylum seekers. Saying they could not stand by as the necessary ingredients for an American Holocaust emerge.

Liza Burkin a 30-year-old urban planner from Providence said, "I am Jewish, and I refuse to be a good German." She and 17 others were taken into police custody for refusing to move away from an entry zone for the detention center. As she was led away she said, "We are focused way too much on the end of the Holocaust and not as much on the beginning and this is directly comparable."

It has come to this...

The Marshall Plan

What we are doing with regard to migrants and asylum seekers is evil and it is costing the United States millions and millions of dollars. Much of that money going to private contractors who are in bed with "45" and his cronies. It is a scam of monumental proportions and we are fighting the wrong war. What this rich nation should be doing is invoking a Marshall Plan for Central America.

A little history: The Marshall Plan was an American initiative passed in 1948 to aid Western Europe in rebuilding their economies after World War II. The U.S. gave over $12 billion (roughly $100 billion in 2019 dollars) to help create the thriving economy that is now Europe.

Imagine, for a moment, if we took that road with Central America. If the United States really wants to shut down the flow of migrants and asylum seekers we need to look at the root cause for them coming here. It's economics kids. If only we had the guts to admit it.

Meet Andrea Love

Last week the West Des Moines Democrats held a massive picnic and fund-raiser. On hand were presidential candidates Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA), Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) and her husband John as well as former congressman and Navy Admiral Joe Sestak.  It was a big deal...as other candidates came to speak which included home-town Congresswoman Cindy Axne (D-IA) who is seeking re-election in Iowa's Third Congressional District. 

Months before the WDM Dems contracted with Hy-Vee, a chain of grocery stores based in West Des Moines, to handle the food. When it was exposed that Hy-Vee gave $25,000 to the Republican Party of Iowa Victor Dutchuk of the WDM Dems met with others and the decision was to move away from that agreement and find another source to handle the food prep and service. Partly Personal

It was a heck of a week. Along with the West Des Moines Democrats picnic I helped out a fellow Democrat get to meet other Democrats in Central Iowa. Former Navy Admiral and Pennsylvania congressman Joe Sestak announced his candidacy for president just two weeks ago after learning that his daughter had, once again, beaten brain cancer. With no staff, or much knowledge of Iowa, he dove in and asked if I'd offer some help.  So, and while I'm not working for Joe, I felt it was important for people to get to know him. So we did the WDM Picnic and then he went on to march in the parade there. On the 4th I walked with him in the, very long and HOT, Urbandale Parade and then peeled off to do Windsor Heights Parade on behalf of the Windsor Heights Democrats. Did I do one selfe of any of that?  Nope! Oh my! But do want to thank my friend Dylan Funk for taking loads of shots on Wednesday during the WDM event.  Thank you my friend.

Then it was on to a great evening of music by Abby Normal at Nights in the Heights.  Yep, slept very well on Thursday night.

I was honored to have been asked to sit for a photo with a candidate for the Urbandale City Council Larry McBurney. Things are changing in Urbandale as Democrats compete in partisan and non-partisan elections. For many, many years Urbandale was considered a safe haven for the GOP. Not any longer and the same is happening in other communities as neighborhood groups associated with the Polk County Democrats continue to grow and become major activists. It's always about organizing. If you need proof...be in Ankeny this coming weekend. 

Finally...it happened again. "Daisy" is a mascot of the Polk County Democrats and she has been making the rounds at various functions. My friend, Wendell Eck created a float for "Daisy" and she's been in several parades. A couple of weeks ago she fell from her perch and broke her leg. I picked her up the day before the Windsor Heights Parade...took her to the event. After the parade and on the way back to the staging area one of the straps that held her down came loose and...yes, "Daisy" fell once again.  So, it's back in the repair shop and finding a better way to anchor her.

And, yes, I feel lousy that it happened on my watch.

Sunday Morning Coffee - 30 June 2019

Not only is the coffee hot...so too is the weather. Welcome to Sunday Morning Coffee with some of the stories you've seen and others you may have missed but all are laced with my commentary. Why? It's what I do. Let's roll...

The Economy

I do a daily newscast about business and last week we had a story about the economy and how wonderful it is. I mean, you are living on easy street. But the problem is you fail to give credit to the president for all his hard work that has allowed you to relax in the lap of luxury.

Except you ain't and we all know it. On Friday Wall Street posted some crazy numbers. The Dow gained 7.2% in June, its best June performance since 1938. The S&P 500 rose 6.9% this month, its biggest June gain since 1955. The Nasdaq advanced 7.4%.

Trouble is this is the part of the economy you're not in...me either. A new Bankrate survey of more than 1,000 U.S. consumers found 39% believe the economy is “not so good” or “poor.” A sample of financial experts, in comparison, all rated the economy as “good” or “excellent.” Where is the disconnect?

The reality is that middle income Americans are simply not doing as well as their more wealthy counterparts and people are starting to crack. It is, my friends, a Tale of Two Cities all over again. Income inequality gaining strength...it's time to change things for the people.

The Debates

Otherwise known as "Two Nights Where Sixty-Second Soundbites Ruled". It wasn't so much of a debate as it was a circus. And, yes, I watched both...twice.

The day before the first debate I was asked in a radio interview if the candidates would trash "45" and that would be that. I said that my sense is that the candidates will talk about issues of importance to the families of America, "kitchen table talk" as they say. I was right. However, there were lots of issues not covered well and candidates who have really good ideas never got to make their case. 

Lots of people watched and many felt like their candidate did really well. Some have gone so far as to rank winners and losers. Me? I think it is way, way too early. There are substantial topics like climate change, health care, income inequality, voter rights, jobs of this century and systemic racism that need more conversation. My thoughts anyway...

The Hy-Vee PAC

Well this caused a firestorm. Bleeding Heartland authored a story early in the week about how the Iowa based grocery store chain's political action committee wrote a check for $25,000 to the Iowa Republican Party just days ahead of welcoming "45" to their convention center in West Des Moines. 

That action caused people to call for a boycott of the grocer, threaten to shop less and trash Hy-Vee all over social media.

The outcry was so severe that the PAC director Mary Beth Hart issued an explanation as to why the Hy-Vee PAC gave up such a large donation. If you want to read the rational here is that link.

What doesn't hold water in that statement is the rational. It seems Hy-Vee wanted to talk to "45" about the "high cost of prescription drugs". So, to be able to do that required a $25,000 check to the Iowa GOP?

To prove that Hy-Vee is a bipartisan corporation Mary Beth wrote that, "When President Obama was in office, Hy-Vee leaders went to Capitol Hill to discuss various health-related issues, and in 2012, Hy-Vee teamed up with and hosted First Lady Michelle Obama for a health and wellness day for more than 10,000 kids in Des Moines."

None of which required a $25,000 donation.

So Who Are They?

It's a fair question. Just who are the Iowa Republicans? Let's make a list shall we? The Iowa Republican Party:

• Believes in voter suppression and creates rules to make that possible;
• Believes women should not have control over their bodies and creates laws that say so;
• Believes collective bargaining, which creates better wages for working families, is evil;
• Believes every man, woman and child should own a gun and passes laws to make it so;
• Believes that public education is an evil that must be starved to death;
• Believes that public school teachers are a threat that must be dealt with;
• Believes that health care is not a right but a tool to extract more money for a bloated system;
• Believes that income inequality is based on the idea that some folks are just...lazy;
• Believes that we can continue to pollute our land and water without consequence;
• Believes that our court system must be controlled through political interference;
• Believes it's OK to embrace dictators and shun our long time allies;
• Believes that love is not love but hate is just dandy;
• Believes that ripping children away from their parents and putting them up for adoption is right;
• Believes that the words on the Statue of Liberty mean nothing;
• Believes that massive corporate gifts are more important than mental health care;
• Believes there are "good people" who promote racism in our nation.

That about sums it up. Nice to know who were facing.

Partly Personal

Yesterday I was covering two events where former Congressman John Delaney was speaking. The first was a small gathering of NAACP leaders who sat with the candidate and had a frank an open discussion on a number of wide ranging issues from "banking deserts" in minority neighborhoods to the minimum wage and reaching out to the faith community and what that means. That was followed by a town hall meeting with the Iowa Asian-Latino Coalition at the statehouse where Delaney was asked a different set of questions from trans-people serving in the military to issues of immigration to his stand health care. 

I thought John Delaney did very, very well and many remarked about his sensable answers about getting things done. This week I'll air my conversation with him as I asked only four questions.

But, there was something else going on at the Statehouse that flew under the radar of the local media. Over a hundred people gathered on the west side of the Capital to call attention to the plight of the people living in Sudan. Christians and Muslims came together to chant for freedom from oppression and an end to the endless war there that is killing hundreds of people every day. 

I've got to admit that with everything else going on I've been out of the loop on this issue. However, I was able to have a conversation with some of the leaders of the movement and I'll air that piece later this week. 

The bottom line here is that nobody covered the story. Nobody. No newspaper reporters, nobody from the TV media...and if I had not
stumbled onto the event...I too would have missed it.

Finally, last evening I went to a fund-raiser for Congresswoman Cindy Axne (D-IA) where I was able to visit with a number of Democrats about a host of items. Then Cindy took the floor to talk about life in Washington D.C. and how it often contrasts with Iowa. She talked about Rural Iowa and her thoughts about getting that economy back on track. She spoke to the issue of impeachment and how she is following leadership on the issue. She spoke about health care, climate change and about her efforts of introducing legislation that will impact working families.

It was a good event and I was delighted to catch up with her and others. A staffer for Congresswoman Axne snapped this photo before we posed for the more "traditional" shot.

I often think the candid photos are really the best. Cindy Axne is the real deal...and we should be proud to have her. She will be in a tough race going forward. If you are able...join the team.

Sunday Morning Coffee - The Father's Day Edition

Something special today...the Urbandale Public Library is closed. Equal time for Father's Day!!!  Yay and a Happy Father's Day to you and yours. Being a Dad is a wonderment and I am grateful...forever. OK, coffee is on and the world is crazy these days. Let's get into it...politics and gossip because it is Sunday Morning Coffee!

Just Impeach 

"Norway, if you are listening...". I am so done with this guy. To think, that at one time, the office of the President of the United States meant something. Today the majority of Americans and nations look at our "great leader" and laugh. This past week brought everything to a new low. While countless experts inside and outside of the government warn of potential cyber issues rolling into 2020 the GOP sits on the sidelines because they know and hope this most unpopular president will get the help he needs for re-election. 

Meanwhile in the U.S. Senate Mitch McConnell (R-TN) has vowed that the recently House bill on election security will "not get a vote" in the Senate. Of course not...the goal is to protect at all costs...even the very democracy we say we love and wish to defend. 

Lies and Liars

So White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders is leaving her job as chief liar and presidential apologist. I've often wondered how she sleeps at night knowing that she consistently misleads the American people. But, then again, the apple does not fall far from the tree. One glance at her father gives it away and of course Arkansas fell for that one...too.  Happy Father's Day and cue Scaramucci?

Oil Tankers

We all remember "weapons of mass destruction" and what turned out to be a dud. It wasn't the first time a president lied. But when the Commander-in-Chief lies...daily...how can we believe that Iran is responsible for an attack on an oil tanker? The simple answer is that we can not. And, that's the problem. In business there is one word we hate and that word is "uncertainty". Given the track record of "45' who the hell knows what happened and that is the real danger he has brought to our nation.

Tired of Losing?

I was talking to a friend the other day about politics...and losing. I've been involved in political efforts for decades. As a staffer a candidate and a volunteer. I've won some...and lost others. There is a greater lesson, I believe, in losing than in winning. 

Over the past several months I've been having serious conversations with people about public office and the one thing that always comes up is that we, as Democrats, tend to be too timid in our policy decisions. It's not that we don't believe in the policies but that we tend to melt away from the hard-nosed fight. To be sure, there are exceptions. But, far too often we're playing defense when the times demand offense. People follow because they believe that the person who is speaking really, really is going to the mat for the issues that resonate.

It is always about the electorate...always.

It's something to chew on as we ramp up to 2020 and beyond.

Iowa U.S. Senate Race

It's getting more interesting by the day. With three Democrats already announcing their campaigns political folk are hinting there may be more waiting in the wings. Currently Theresa Greenfield, Kimberly Graham and Eddie Mauro are all in to take on Sen. Joni Ernst (R-IA) next year. Linn County Supervisor Stacey Walker said that he is "considering" a run and J.D. Scholten who ran a great race against Rep. Steve King (R-IA) last cycle says stuff that sounds like a candidate. 

Granted the "talk" is just talk and one has to wonder if the strong announcement from Greenfield was enough to freeze the lineup. The one thing that is a bit troubling is the three announced candidates are all from Polk County and one has to wonder how that will play statewide.

No answers here...just questions.

Help Wanted

This past week we had a news story that the Labor Department reported there are 1.5 million more open jobs in the United States than there are unemployed people. To put that in perspective if there are 6 million unemployed people in America there are 7.5 million open jobs. That is the biggest spread...ever.

In that same report we learned that there were 3.4 million "voluntary quits" in April. That means folks who are working at a job they hate...left to find employment elsewhere.

All of this is having a big impact on political campaigns. With so many 2020 presidential candidates in the field good talent is being sucked up...quickly. Several campaigns have told me that finding people has been tough.

Bottom line...if you are "so done" with your dead-end job. NOW is the time to move on.

Reminder - Polk County Steak Fry

You're going to get this on a weekly basis you know...the Harkin Steak Fry held in Indianola each year on behalf of former Sen. Tom Harkin (D-IA) was always a great event. Three years ago the Polk County Democrats, with Tom's blessing, resurrected the steak fry idea and branded it for the party. This year it's going to be massive and there is no better time than NOW to get your tickets. Come on...it will be fantastic!

Partly Personal

I was visiting with a young lady the other day who said, "My gosh, you are always so busy and you've got so much going on in your professional life. How do you keep up?" I'm hoping that was a complement. 

Oh...and former Vice President Joe Biden was in Iowa last week. Just sayin'.

Today it's off to more softball games. Jovie (grand-daughter) is on a team that has won the first three games of their state tournament. She's the catcher and a damn good one. Later this morning we're going to have to measure her "wing-span". At 11 years old sometimes pitchers can get a bit wild with their pitches but Jovie snags balls low...and really high. It's fun to watch on Father's Day.
