Come with me to "The Dark Side" as some would call it...yep, my world view is a bit more progressive than most and once a week I get to share some stories you may have seen...or missed...about politics, religion and a little gossip thrown in just for flavor. Time for Sunday Morning Coffee! Grab a cup but, be warned, it may be...hot.

The Media Trump

The media along with the bombastic ability of Donald Trump has made his campaign. The more outlandish his actions or words the more the media salivates and reports. I am going to be so grateful when this is over and the media should be ashamed. Had they been reporting all along about this man and his failed business schemes, his shady personal life, his shifting work out of the country, his failure to release tax information, his absolute failure to provide even a small amount of public service to an American that he believes is broken we would he never would have ascended to this level of support. But, the media...never failing to fail...bought it and rather than do their job in the early months they pushed what would sell. Weary...

The Nicer Trump?

Well, so much for policy. Last week Mr. Trump replaced the equally shady Paul Manafort with Breitbart News chief and professional flame-thrower Steve Bannon as campaign CEO and Kellyanne Conway as campaign manager. They are stacking up: Corey Lewandowski, Paul Manafort and now Bannon and Conway. I can hear it now.. "You're fired!"  With 78 days to go wanna bet there is another change at the top?  By the way last week Mr. Trump said he should not have said some things but did not elaborate. "Regrets, I have a few, but then again...too few to mention...."

Meanwhile in Michigan

Mr. Trump, speaking to  an overwhelmingly white audience that featured only a smattering of African-Americans and other minorities in the Lansing suburb of Dimondale said to African-American voters, "You're living in poverty, your schools are no good, you have no jobs, 58% of your youth is unemployed -- what the hell do you have to lose?" (Trump has cited the 58% statistic before, a figure likely extrapolated from the employment-population ratio, which shows that 42.7% of blacks ages 16 to 24 had a job in July. But that doesn't mean that those without a job are necessarily looking for one.) Way to swing the vote Donald. Meanwhile Hillary Clinton tweeted, "This is so ignorant it is staggering." Yep...agreed. The Final Day of Hate

It's the final day of the Iowa State Fair and the weather here in Des Moines is...delightful.  Last week I stopped in the Iowa State Democratic booth in the varied industries building and visited with veteran campaign volunteer Kerry Bowen about her experience. She told me the attitude of people is, "the worst I've ever experienced". For those of you who may not know the Democratic booth and the Republican booth are next to each other in the Varied Industries Building separated by a 20' aisle. "Some people have been nice but the vast majority of people that have negative things to say do so in such a mean manner and they parrot hate-speech that is so offensive. It is like nothing I have ever experienced." Kerry should know, she's been working on Democratic campaigns for decades.

The Clinton Foundation

The Right and the Left are in a froth over the donors who have, over the years, supported the Clinton Foundation. They are upset over donations of a million dollars or more by the likes of (hold on this get good)  The list includes the governments of Saudi Arabia and Australia, the British bank Barclay’s, and major U.S. companies such as Coca-Cola and ExxonMobil. Shocking that a foundation with the express intent to fund health-care, education and environmental initiatives around the world would accept money from Australia or Coca-Cola! Oh and chummy with Saudi Arabia? Each administration since Reagan has dolled out money and curried favor with the kingdom. Please people...get a grip.  Really, this is all you've got? You are going to hold this over Hillary while the GOP candidate has, what is arguably, the worst record in business and personal life?

Tom and Christie Vilsack

I posted this story on my personal Facebook Page but it's worth repeating here. Last week Roxanne Conlin hosted the 16th Annual Polk County Democratic Women's Event at her home. There were, at least, 150 people there waiting for special guests former Iowa Governor and now USDA Sec. Tom Vilsack and his wife and former Iowa First Lady, Christie Vilsack. I was standing on the porch chatting with Roxanne when the big black SUV came up the street. That tends to be "standard issue" for government types and usually carries the dignitary and security. Just ahead of that "monster vehicle" was a small, red Mercury Mountaineer (I think, can't tell any more). It pulled up and climbing out of the passenger seat was Tom Vilsack and the driver? Christie. It was soooooo Iowan and so Tom and Christie. It was one of those moments folks "back east" wouldn't understand unless they live in Vermont.

Governor Vilsack?

When it was time for the speeches Sec. Vilsack said something that was one of the most enduring things I've heard. I did not record this but wrote about it on Facebook during the event. He stood on this staircase and along with other things had this to say about his bride: "She has been with me and had my back for over 43 years. I will love this woman until the day I die." It's the first time veteran politicos had seen Tom Vilsack choke up and, there was not a dry eye in the house. (Click on the image to enlarge.)

After the crowd started to move out I had the chance to chat with Sec. Vilsack about both of these items and asked him if, after Washington, if he and Christie would be moving back to Iowa and Des Moines. He said, "Yes, we've got a house here in Iowa and this is home. I can't imagine living anywhere else." I said to him that it is clear that Iowa also loves him and my bet would be that Iowa would welcome his leadership and would vote him back as Governor. He said, "I don't know, we've not done such a good job at recycling lately." You can take that for what it is worth.

Jack Hatch

It was great to see my friend former State Senator Jack Hatch (D-Des Moines) at the event. He told me he is writing a book that he hopes to release after the election. From what I gathered it is going to be quite an honest look at the Iowa Democratic Party and some changes that, he believes, needs to happen. We'll see. 

The Women of Polk and Dallas County

Partly Personal

One of my biggest regrets of the past week was not demanding that my grand-daughters accompany me to the event at the home of Roxanne Conlin. I should have made that happen. Even though they are young I think it's never too early to have them meet and be among female leaders who are not family members. When you actually see the possibilities it is much easier to attain them.  Dang...missed opportunity.

Gotta go and sorry this is late because dinner last night was way late.  My bride did a "Century Ride" yesterday with several in her Des Moines Cycle Club Peddle Off the Pounds group. For many on that ride it was an emotional experience at accomplishing something that, just 20 weeks ago, would have been impossible. I know she is so very proud of each of them.  Well done.

Be Very Afraid

Word is that Representative Keith Ellison (D. MN) will be making an appearance on behalf of Unity and Religious Tolerance with Interfaith Leaders on Tuesday, December 29 at 11:30 a.m. For those of you who might want to know more let's get together at Masjid An-Noor (Muslim Community Organization), 1117 42nd Street, Des Moines.  We'll be joined by State Rep. Christmas Eve Press Conference

My friend Desmund Adams held a press conference on Christmas Eve at 9AM. The room was packed with supporters and the campaign issued this release: (And you can click on the photo to enlarge.)

At a presser on December 24^th, 2015, the Adams for Congress Campaign welcomed friends and distinguished guests to the Holiday Inn, Mercy Campus in Downtown Des Moines to announce new endorsements and campaign leadership. The event was attended by more than 30 people, signaling enthusiasm for Desmund’s campaign.

Among those in attendance were campaign chair and former Lt. Governor of Iowa, Jo Ann Zimmerman (Happy Birthday!), campaign co-chairs State Representative Ako Abdul-Samad & State Representative Ruth Ann Gaines, and LULAC National Vice President for the Midwest Joe Enriquez Henry. These key campaign staff appointments will serve in an advisory role on the Adams campaign.

Each week I get to write about politics, religion, gossip and I never seem to run out of material...mostly because of the jaw-dropping reality of where we all get to live and the amazing people who run our lives. Some of you will hate what is here and others may agree. And that's just fine with me. So snuggle up with your electronic device and enjoy this week's Sunday Morning Coffee.

The Terrorists in Congress

This past week the United States Senate, 100 semi-powerful people, voted to allow individuals who are on the Terrorist Watch List to buy guns. Just about any gun. Right there in lock-step was Iowa's two leaders of Guns in the Free World, Sen. Charles Grassley (R-IA) and Sen. Jodi Ernst (R-IA). Republican trolls, who follow some of my writing, last week denied there was even a Terrorist Watch List. I love how they obfuscate the issue. Refugees are not the problem congress is. Oh, and by the way, of the terrorist attacks in the United States...over half of them were born here. What we really have is a lack of leadership. You would think that if a person is banned from boarding an airline that same person would be banned to buy a firearm. Cowards. By the way did you know that Rep. David Young (R-IA), a guy folks say is "nice", received $4,950 from the NRA in the most recent cycle. Only Sen. Joni Ernst (R-IA) received more...$9,900 bought her. (Cartoon - Tim Lloyd)

It's Time

It is time for the United States to start banning firearms. Oh sure, we'll let you keep you pea-shooters but semi-automatic weapons...gone. High capacity magazines...gone. Our friends in Australia took this measure after a mass shooting there back in 1996 and guess what? No more mass shootings.  We are a nation of fools being goaded into a misrepresentation of the Second Amendment by the NRA and their ilk. Weary. And if you really, really want to change this mess the first step is to toss every single Republican from office. Every local politician, every county office holder, everyone in congress...gone.  But you won't because you too...in the end...are cowards.  

And then there is this 2015 Christmas Card from Michele Fiore a member of the Nevada State Legislature. She must have taken notes during Sen. Joni Ernst's election. While it isn't shocking, because nothing these folks in the GOP do shocks me any more, what is stunning is that she takes the time to ID each individual and call out what type of gun they are holding. No baby Jesus...just guns. Ya gotta love it.

Speaking of Congress and Cowards

Iowa State Senator Mark Chelgren (R-Ottumwa) is no coward when it comes to the death penalty. He recently called for the extermination of individuals who try to re-enter the United States illegally. No...really. And, he is pro-life.  But there is more. His call to execute people came after he said that Iowa's early childhood programs are like Nazi indoctrination camps and that recipients of child support (read that again...child support) should be drug tested at the request of the person who is paying child support. When I suggest to my friends that Republicans are crazy they look at me in disbelief.  Ladies and gentlemen I offer you Exhibit A - Mark Chelgren. (Photo - Fairfield Ledger)

Speaking off Crazy Republicans

My friend State Representative Chris Hagenow (R-Windsor Heights) received some bad news this week. Chris, as you may recall, had one heck of a legislative session last go around. The Bill he said he was most proud of was his wacky Convention of the States campaign. That is where Republicans, who hate government, opt out of federal rules, regulations and laws...at their pleasure. You see, Chris hates government...well not all government he loves his type of government.  His reward for being so ineffective with that Bill? The GOP controlled House of Representatives rewarded him with the title of House Majority Leader. See, the more wacky you are the more the GOP loves you. Anyway, I digress...Chris got some bad news last week. My friend, and one of the brightest people I know, Jonathan Neiderbach announced that he was not going to run for the Iowa House District 43 and rather offer his support to the other Democratic candidate Jennifer Konfrst (photo) thereby allowing Jennifer to skip a primary and start to focus directly on Mr. Hagenow.  I saw Jonathan on Tuesday evening and again thanked him and praised his decision. Well done my friend. Now let's double down and defeat Mr. Hagenow because we need less...wacky.

While We're on Wacky

It looks like Gov. Terry Branstad (R-IA) will get his way, even though he is facing lawsuits and rejection on his desire to privatize Medicaid in Iowa. You see what happens when you vote for somebody you "think" is "nice"? You didn't want to vote for former State Senator Jack Hatch (D-Des Moines) because...  I'm waiting.  Because... Could it be because you were duped? Could it be because you long for crumbs to fall to the floor in the form of corporate give-a-ways?  You reap what you sow. Congratulations Iowa and he's just getting started.

New Blood

The Village of Windsor Heights is primed for some progressive government action. This past Tuesday the citizens here elected Zac Bales-Henry to the City Council. It was his first attempt at politics and he bested incumbent Charlene Butz by winning over 60% of the vote. Sixty percent. He did it by knocking on doors, activating a progressive base of support, using social media and working hard. Even on election day, not taking anything for granted, Zac and his supporters were out in force waving signs and signals about the election. That, my friends, is how you win. Zac joins the other new city council victor Threase Harms who also ran a very professional campaign and worked the progressive side of the community. 

The election was easy...now comes the hard part, governing.

I had lunch this week with a Christian. No, really. An honest, born-again, home schooling Christian. And it was a pleasure. We talked about parents, children, business and religion. While there was not one word about politics, but I'm sure he saw my Bernie Sanders bumper sticker, we agreed on nearly every topic. It was a meaningful conversation. To give you a flavor of the discussion I offer you this video.  It really touched me.

I know, it's been a long time.  In the opening months of 2014 I was the primary care-giver for my Mother z"l who lived in our home. That took a bunch of time and after she died on the first day of Spring that same year...I longed for some time off. Sunday Morning seemed like a great time to "take it easy". So, that's the excuse.  But that's not why you stopped by so let's go!

Justice Antonin Scalia

It was a rough week for the Supreme Court Justice with stuff like the Court upholding the Affordable Care Act, Fair Housing and Marriage Equality. Former Des Moines Register writer Regina Zilbermints who now is based in Golfport, Mississippi (I'm sorry...) said in her Twitter Feed, "Seriously guys, can someone buy Scalia a cookie or a spa weekend: Sounds like he needs it after this week. #SCOTUS." BEST line of the day!

The UNITED (Wait for it) States of America

Perhaps the most emotional speech I have seen our president give was the eulogy for Pastor Clementa Pinckney.  While some may focus on his singing of Amazing Grace...which was perfect...his last line was over the top. In case you missed it:

 

I know, those of you who hate this president...hate a bunch of things like equal rights, health care for all, people of color, different religions...even folks in "your religion" that just have not figured out the "right way".  I get that and hey...it's OK with me.  But, have you figured out that, on so many of these things, you have been on the losing side of the people? So, keep hating.  We'll simply continue to march forward.

Two Blogs Worth Following

Earlier this year former State Senator Jack Hatch and some investors created the Iowa Daily Democrat. If you don't want to be bothered by facts or if you prefer the flamethrower approach to political discourse DON'T click through. Solid group of writers including former Associated Press reporter, Mike Glover.  Another interesting read is The Starting Line by my friend Patrick Rynrad.  Lot's of Iowa Caucus and Iowa Political stuff.

Gossip & Rumor & Facts

This often is my favorite part.  Story is that former Governor and life-long politician Chet Culver is all but IN to square off against (Yet to announce - but traveling all over the Third District.) businessman and community service volunteer, Desmund Adams.  Other names include Jim Mower who recently moved back into the Third from the Fourth District and U.S. Attorney Nick Klinefeldt. Other name mentions, Staci Appel (out) and State Senator Matt McCoy...I don't think so and State Senator Janet Peterson...nope. Why spend the money on a tough primary when you're a lock for your existing seat? Ain't gonna happen.

Want More?

Looks like there will be another race in House District 42 (Windsor Heights/Clive).  Not sure if, yet to announce, Jon Neiderbach will have a primary but whoever faces Rep. Chris Hagenow count me in.  I'm still trying to figure out what Mr. Hagenow has done for his district in the three terms he's been here. His "hot button issue" last session was some goofy "Convention of the States" radical right-wing agenda item.  Education? Nah. Minimum Wage? Nah.  Equal Pay/Equal Work? Nah. But wait! He was all over requiring women to have an ultrasound before having an abortion. No word on if Chris will support a bill requiring men to view their testicles on a large video monitor before having a vasectomy.  Weary.

Meanwhile In Urbandale

She's IN! My friend State Sen. Brad Zahn (R-Urbandale) has, at least one challenger in former combat veteran, author, activist, model and public speaker Miyoko Hikiji. She will be a formidable opponent given her background and abilities. Urbandale is not as "red" as it once was...Rep. John Forbes (D-Urbandale) and the Democrats need to add to their senate numbers.

Urbandale also has a very active neighborhood group, as do other cities and counties.  Democratic neighbors are banning together and forming activist organizations with the express idea to push progressive policies on the local level.  I know...I belong to the Windsor Heights Democrats. 

Business and Politics?

Some of you may know that I do a daily business radio broadcast (which I own) and some have said that it is impossible for a Democrat to be pro-business. Huh?  As a business owner (three) I am all over capitalism. Because we may disagree on legislation that is progressive does not mean I'm anti-business. Silly people.

Politics, Religion, Gossip, SMC 11/10/13

My name is Michael P. Libbie and I get to write Sunday Morning Coffee a weekly rant about stuff nobody is supposed to talk about.  You know, politics and religion.  I throw in a little gossip just to make the conversation sweeter.  If you have a comment, feel free to post here or let's connect on my PERSONAL Facebook Page and/or my personal Twitter Stream @MichaelLibbie but, remember, play nice.  Let's get started. (Oh yeah..."Twitter is a waste of time!"...uh huh $41.65 at the close of last week.)

Immigration Reform

Well now it seems like even Rep. Steve King (R-IA) may be on the wrong side of this issue...too.  Politico is reporting that a poll, due out on Thursday, conducted by a, "trio of GOP friendly groups" indicates that, "...indicate that voters will be warmer toward politicians who favor immigration reform, an effort that faces an uphill battle in the Republican-led House."  Well now, ain't that special.  If you would like to read the entire piece here is that link.  Question: How come, if Congressman King is wrong on this, wrong on health care, wrong on marriage equality...how come you people in Western Iowa continue to vote him in?  Must be his TV ads...

Technology and Obamacare

Well now isn't this interesting.  Recently, as reported by ARS Technica a technical research reporting agency, it seems that "somebody" out there has created a tool to put extra strain on the website HealthCare.gov.  The report says the hackers have created what they call a "tool to slow down the site".  My, my...somebody isn't playing nice.  Meanwhile Fox News continues to lie about the Affordable Care Act by parading one phony family after another onto their screen.  Look, I don't like the fact that the president bought into this insurance company, GOP program any more than others.  But, it is clearly a start toward a more humane way of dealing with health care in this country.  You want to read the report?  Sure, here is the link. 

Small Business & The Economy

You do know that small business people fear the future and that they are not at all sure about the economy today or tomorrow.  And that they are so unsure of the fragile US economy that they are ready, at any point, to shutter their manufacturing plants, retail stores, etc.  You do know that because every talking head on every toxic right-wing radio and television station has been pounding that drum for two years.  Right?  Uhm...nope.  From the Department of Don't Confuse Me With The Facts comes this recent study by our friends at The Principal which says small business people are optimistic about the economy and their ability to grow.  Sure, just like in farming there is uncertainty but where isn't there.  Dang!  Now what Chicken Little?

Oh, Did I Mention Farming?

Still no Farm Bill.  Why?  Because "The House That Says No" say that poor people, people who were affected by their cut and burn mentality with regard the budgets, are using too many food stamps.  And know what?  According to Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack if the "Do Nothing Congress" fails to get busy on the Farm Bill, farmers, who are really tied to this piece of legislation, may stop buying machinery, vehicles and upgrading their business.  What happens then?  The rural economy goes into a downward spiral.  And for those of you living in urban areas in Iowa think, "So?"  Tell that to the workers at John Deere who were recently laid off.  This is all silly, silly, silly. Weary my friends...weary.

Now For Some Good News!

We have a new mayor in Windsor Heights, Iowa.  It is Madam Mayor too.  Diana Willits was elected last Tuesday along with a couple of other progressive candidates to the City Council.  Some of the other candidates choose to go negative right out of the gun and...they lost.  Here's the deal kids, when running for public office it is much better to run FOR something than against something.  Hint: Running for office to oppose sidewalks near a school is not a good idea.  It might have been attractive back in 2010 when our Tea Party Friends were running all over the country with fear and doom reports...but it ain't that way today...at least on the local level.  Congrats Diana and Company!  A pleasure to call Windsor Heights...home. (Yes, I know, I voted for a registered Republican AND a woman!  The horror...)  BTW, first female mayor in city history.  I have NOT done the research but...could she be the first female mayor in the Des Moines Metro?  Anybody?  I should ask my friend Bob Santi.  He knows EVERYTHING!  Bob?

What?  More Good News?

Congratulations to my friend Susan Judkins (left with Sen. Jack Hatch) who was recently appointed to the Clive City Council.  Susan ran an impressive campaign against Rep. Chris Hagenow but lost by 22 votes. (The ghost of Kevin McCarthy still haunts me.) She recently changed jobs and had some time to spend working for the public in a new way...as an appointed city council person filling former Councilman Steven Brody's vacant seat.  Brody resigned unexpectedly on October 3rd, citing, "personal reasons".  BAM!

Sorry for such...LOCAL news...but it seems that the stuff on the state and national scene is so....ick.  Like...this:

 

The Shutdown...Blows

Moody's Analytics estimates the Des Moines Metro saw a 0.27 percent, or about a 22.1 million dollar drop in gross state product as a result of the partial shutdown of the federal government for 17 days in October.  The Quad Cities, including Davenport and Bettendorf in Iowa and Moline and Rock Island in Illinois, were hit even harder, experiencing an estimated 25.3 million dollar loss.  Iow City took a 7.1 million dollar hit, while the Cedar Rapids, Ames and Sioux City Metros saw losses of 3.8 million, 3.4 million and 2.4 million each.  Uhm..."damn gobment ain't good for nothin'"...right?  Weary...double weary.

OK...week four with having Mom at our home.  Friday night we had another nosebleed and spent from midnight to 6AM at the ER in West Des Moines.  That was fun.  Mom takes rat-poison (Warfarin) as a blood thinner.  Each month we check her I&R levels at her doctor.  That test takes about thirty seconds.  Meanwhile that test at Mercy West Lakes ER takes four hours.  I dunno either.  But got stuff stopped and back home in time to watch the sun come up.  She was grumpy yesterday.

The Affordable Care Act

My friends on the Right are awash with crazy.  In this world of "easy fact finding" where anybody can write anything and it becomes "fact" it is not surprising they are finding all sorts of horror stories about everything evil regarding Obamacare.  Weary.  However, these same individuals have never, not once, uttered a negative word about the over-charging by defense contractors, the crappy equipment that is often turned out by them, the late deliveries and the massive cost overruns.  Not one general has been forced from office because of their incompetence.  Yet a website won't work and it is the "end of the world".  Please...

President Obama

Did the president make a huge error in telling Americans that "...if you like your current health care coverage you can keep it..."  Yes.  The president knew that many Americans were carrying crappy health care insurance policies because they were cheap and failed to cover much.  He should have picked his words more carefully.  Shame, Mr. President.

U.S. deficit falls to $680 billion

Did you see this? For all the hand wringing going on in Washinton and among many candidates regarding the federal deficit…might it be just...theater?  The federal government's latest annual deficit is the smallest it's been since 2008, according to U.S. Treasury Department data released last week. At $680 billion, the fiscal 2013 deficit is 51% less than it was in 2009, when it hit a record high nominally of $1.4 trillion. As a percent of the economy, it's also considerably smaller than it's been in the past five years, coming in at 4.1% of gross domestic product. By contrast, the annual deficit in 2009 topped 10% of GDP. And last year it was 6.8%.  But, I know, "Don't confuse me with the facts!"

Jefferson Jackson Day Dinner

I missed it.  I was across the street at the Iowa Wild Hockey game where we lost to Texas (of all places...why do you people stay there?) by a score of 0 - 5 and they out-shot the Wild 40 - 20.  I should have gone with my friends the Nancy and Bo Bobo.  They had a good time, it seems, with Senator Jack Hatch.

Speaking of Senator Hatch

Some of you know that I host a daily business news magazine on 1350-KRNT, M-F from 5PM to 6PM, here in Des  Moines.  Senator Hatch was a guest of the show several weeks ago.  This week Bob Krause is coming by for a visit and we are still trying to get Tyler Olson in.  That should round it out.  When the GOP figures out what they are doing we'll be sure to ask their candidate(s) as well.  See, I am "fair and balanced".  By the way, here is the podcast with Senator Jack Hatch.

The Chris Diebel Deal

Last week the Des Moines Register endorsed Chris Diebel for the Des Moines City Council Election.  It seems they knew not of the muck-raking Mr. Diebel was involved with by attempting to tie fellow Democrat Skip Moore to his failure to advocate that the city set aside money to pay for a court-ordered refund of gas and electric utility franchise fees.  When the fact was that Mr. Moore was not on the city council at the time and had nothing at all to do with that issue.  Then, on Friday the Des Moines Register reversed course and recanted their endorsement.  Here is that piece.  Congrats to my friends on the Editoral Board, you got this one right.  Now, can we chat about that Mitt Romney endorsement?

Polk County Courthouse

On Tuesday voters in Polk County, Iowa will go to the polls to vote on a plan to renovate, upgrade and create a much better functioning courthouse.  The plan does not do away with the 106 year old building but it does improve it and add some very important safety items.  The $81 million dollar plan creates a youth-offender court in a different location and removes the criminal court from the courthouse to another building, retaining the courthouse for civil matters. Speaking of Elections

On Tuesday I get to vote in the Windsor City Council Election.  Last month I had the privilege of moderating a candidate forum sponsored by the Windsor Heights Chamber of Commerce and had a front row seat as I listened to each person seeking office.  My vote will go to Diana Willits who has served on the City Council for two decades.  She is smart, engaged, positive and progressive.  She has also been the Mayor in light of the resignation (due to moving out of the city) by Mayor Jerry Sullivan. I also will vote for Tony Timm who has great experience in the non-profit sector currently the Executive Director of the Central Iowa Shelter.  I'll also vote for Steve Peterson a thoughtful candidate with City Council experience and a progressive campaign for safety and security.  Finally, I'll be voting for David Jenison.  I don't know David well but I was impressed at his thoughtful remarks during the forum.  For those of you in "the know"...yes, it is true.  I will be casting a ballot for a registered Republican.  Word is they are knitting mittens in Hell.

Partly Personal

I've been absent from SMC for weeks due to my primary duty of caring for my 93 year old Mother.  Three weeks ago we moved Mom into our home.  I had been sleeping on her couch for a month and writing for Sunday Morning Coffee was the last thing on my mind.  Since May 26 we've been in and out of hospitals and skilled nursing care facilities many times.  I am pleased to share with you that today Mom is doing very, very well.  She and my Bride have adjusted to the new living conditions and we're doing OK.  I'm not fooled that this will always "work" but I am grateful for the support of so many, especially Georgie.  Thank you.

At some point I'll detail with you how badly broken the entire aging care system is here in Iowa...and I suspect elsewhere as well.  But not today you have already graced me by reading this much.

The RNC vs. NBC & CNN

The party of transparency voted last week to sever relationships regarding the upcoming GOP Primary Debates with both NBC and CNN because of planned programing which will feature Hillary Clinton.  What a waste of time and effort.  When it comes to uniting Republicans nothing beats their visceral dislike for the former First Lady...unless it is immigrants, middle class families, affordable health care, food stamps, a clean environment, voting...gosh the list can get pretty long.  Meanwhile the "debates" will be worth missing anyway.  What the GOP needs to do is strike ALL of the networks other than Fox News as they will be speaking to themselves anyway.

Why?

I've thought of this often:  "Why would the Republican controlled US House of Representatives vote 40 times to undermine the Affordable Care Act?"  Tim DeLong of Des Moines has this answer:  "Because it would be an object demonstration of the wrong-headedness of right-wing ideology."  In other words, the fear of it actually helping the middle class; the fear of it reducing health care costs; the fear of losing the austerity battle is too great.  It is better to kill it than allow it to work. Remember that the next time you go vote.

Speaking of Voting

While you were sleeping the enlightened folks in North Carolina who in the Tea-Party Take Over of 2010 elected Pat McCrory (R-NC) may be having a case of buyers remorse.  Last week Gov. McCrory, who is holding an approval rating of close to 35%, signed into law the most restrictive voting act in the nation.  It goes beyond showing a voter ID.  The new law eliminates same day registration and reduces early voting (gosh...sounds like Florida) and the ability to vote a straight party ticket.  If you live in Iowa those same issues are championed here by Secretary of State Matt Schultz (R-IA) and Gov. Terry Branstad (R-IA).  These are not isolated cases but rather a very stratigic plan by the GOP to supress the vote.  Why?  Because they can not win moving forward and in case you doubt that see the piece above regarding who they...hate.

But, It Gets Worse

The North Carolina story is bad at its face.  However, dig a little deeper and you'll find that on the local level the Republicans have worked tirelessly to block the vote.  They have closed polling places, challenged residency status of candidates and done whatever they can to make sure only white folks vote.  No?  I implore you to spend ten minutes and watch this piece by Rachel Maddow and pay close attention to the final segment regarding Montravious King.  Shocking...

Nothing Funny About It

Last week my friend State Senator Jack Hatch (D-Des Moines) and his campaign released this video and I've had the them to Smokey and the Bandit running through my head for...days.

 

Of course Gov. Branstad doesn't think it's funny and described it as an "attack ad" and brushed it off as being, "...way too early for this...".  Well, governor, it's not.  You, sir, have not made Iowa proud.  You have used your office and your power to hand out millions of dollars to already successful companies while thumbing your nose at the middle-class.  You have refused to take responsibility for the lack of health care for thousands, continue to ignore our polluted water issues, turn a deaf ear to the misery of young women at the Iowa Juvenile Home and push your religious views down the throats of Iowans. There is nothing funny about any of that...sir.  I'm looking forward to the campaign.

Americans for Prosperity

Our friends David and Charles Koch have brought their bewildering idea to Iowa and will spend millions in an attempt to discredit Rep. Bruce Braley (D-IA).  A guy by the name of Mark Lucas drives around in a purple SUV telling folks that Bruce is the enemy of the people because he "loves big government".  Now, think about this for a minute.  Americans for Prosperity spent $3 million in Iowa trying get Iowans to believe that what is best for our state are "big money job-creators" who see the rest of us as pawns and serfs and Bruce, who grew up in Brooklyn, Iowa the son of a teacher is somehow...the problem.  Not sure what you guys are smoking Mark...but it stinks.

Speaking of Smoking...

The annual Indianolia event known as the Harkin Steak Fry is nearly here.  Coming by for a chat will be Vice President Joe Biden and we're looking forward to the visit.  There is not another political figure in the nation who is more in tune with the public than Joe. He will spend time talking to everybody and anybody and he takes the time to listen...intently.  Back in 2008 then Senator Joe Biden was one of many Democrats who made the Harkin Steak Fry.  Long after the others were gone Joe stuck around holding court with anybody who wanted to talk (photo).  Class guy.

Equal Rights...

My friend Connie Ryan Terrell is the executive director of the Interfaith Alliance of Iowa and in this morning's Des Moines Sunday Register she writes there is "No room for discrimination by businesses".  She is referencing a Grimes facility, The Gortz Haus and owners Dick and Betty Odgaard who are being sued because they denied service to a gay couple planning a wedding at the facility.  What is stunning about this story is the lack of knowledge some business people have regarding public accommodation.  It is against the law to deny protected class citizens the right of public accommodation...for any reason especially religious.  Mind numbing.  Here is the national story from our friends at the Huffington Post. As my friend Desmund Adams has said over and over, "Equal is equal there are no shades of equality."  Weary...

Partly Personal

Today is the final day of the great Iowa State Fair.  Tickets are 1/2 off during Extreme Sunday and thousands will take advantage of the savings and the amazing weather.  We've been several times and it's always the very best.  What a great place to share family and friend face-time.  Enjoy.

We had an impromptu party with Mom on Friday afternoon.  Used the oven at Edgewater to cook up some pizza and two of her great-granddaughters and a great-grandson spent some time chatting, eating and laughing.  We are blessed.

Let Them Eat Cake!

If you are poor and you live in the United States...tough!  We will hold your wages to a minimum where you must work two or three jobs just to survive and if that doesn't put food on the table...tough!  Last week the dysfunctional United States Congress failed to pass a Farm Bill.  The sticking point?  No...not farm-welfare...not peanuts vs. corn.  It was those stinking welfare cheats who take every opportunity to bilk the taxpayer out of money so they can drive Cadillacs and have more children just so they can get more welfare.  Never mind that the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is good for small business, good for growers and good for those who use the program.  Nah...let them eat cake.  We're going to cut our way to sustainability!

Well, Maybe Not...

A week ago the International Monetary Fund held a press conference in Washington, DC and told the United States that the biggest barrier to sustained growth of our economy is...(hold on...) the Sequester Cuts.  Well, no kidding!  From the transcript: "... repeal the sequester and adopt a more balanced and gradual pace of fiscal consolidation. This would help the recovery at a time when monetary policy, which has been very helpful, has now limited room to support it much further. The sequester cuts not only reduce growth in the short term, but they also hurt the most vulnerable and they produce very undesirable effect in that regard."  In other words we are idiots to expect a robust economy when we're cutting and slashing expenses that, by their very nature help the overall economy grow.  Meanwhile folks like Gov. Terry Branstad (R-IA) crow about how many government jobs have been slashed.  Really?  Those workers buy, or used to, buy stuff and they were working for me and you.  But...nope cut, cut, cut!  It is an insane policy.

Speaking of Governor Branstad

The governor last week decided that he, and not the Iowa Legislature knows better when it comes to the state budget so he slashed spending by nearly $100 million.  Pension fund for the police? Nah...don't wanna do that.  Even though state government has welshed on their commitment for years forcing cities to take up the slack. It all reminds me of what my friend Desmund Adams has said over and over and over: "There is no such thing as a tax cut; there is only tax shifting."  Which is exactly what this legislature and this governor have done to cities and homeowners.  Watch my children...or better yet, ask the number crunchers in your town or county.  

Bruce Braley & Those Other Folks

The field for the Iowa Republicans attempt to capture a US Senate seat is getting more crowded by the day.  The latest two names are both GOP insiders who worked for the Ron Paul campaign in 2011/2012.  That should not be surprising because the Iowa GOP is pretty much run by the "Paul Movement" and the Christian Conservatives.  I miss Gov. Bob Ray (R-IA).  The man would not have a snowball's chance in Hell of getting elected to anything by this crowd.  It's a shame.  Meanwhile Rep. Bruce Braley (D-IA) continues to work the state to become better known.  "The Iowa Problem Solver" as he has been dubbed, is not worried about GOP bloggers who say that because of the looming Republican Primary his name recognition will continue to suffer because the media will be talking about the bat-crap-crazy Republicans who are running. No...they will always refer to the Democrat in the race...always.  It's wishful thinking from my bat-crap-crazy friends.

Women Owned Businesses

At least the $50,000 is going to a female-owned business in Iowa. The back-story is that Iowa ranks last, dead last, in the growth of female-owned businesses and the Iowa Economic Development Authority wants somebody to figure out what can be done and so...surprise...they actually hired an Iowa company to figure it out.  Lydia Brown hopes to find ways to overcome the embarrassing problem.  Lydia, here is a tip and it comes from my friend Desmund Adams. (Gosh, that is twice I've quoted him today.)  Ready? Require the Iowa State Legislature to actually live up to the states promise to buy stuff from minority/women owned businesses.  That's something that could be done quickly...well maybe.  Seems the state loves to pass out cash to already successful companies. Such as...

Project Mountain

The state will give Microsoft $20 million in tax credits to create 30 jobs in West Des Moines.  See...we got no problem giving already successful corporations your tax dollars.  However, if you are a start up.  Tough.  It's sort of like, "let them eat cake".  Where have I seen that before?

Remember What I Said?

Remember when I shared with you that Gov. Terry Branstad (R-IA), an avowed abortion opponent, will now decide if a poor woman in Iowa who is on Medicaid will be granted an abortion. ("Oh, He Already Did" - June 16, 2013)  My friend Rekha Basu from the Des Moines Register puts it well, "Such a paternalistic intrusion by Big Brother into the most private of health care decisions is the unprecedented way the Republican-controlled House and Democrat-controlled Senate chose to settle differences between those who would prefer there be no legal abortions and those who believe in a 40-year old constitutional right."  Here is a link to her article.  Again, Sen. Hello, Mr. President...

I often start out my cell phone calls with that greeting.  And, in light of what we now "think" we know I always give a shout out on Twitter to the NSA.  Some of you are "shocked" and "outraged" that you are being spied on.  Really?  It's been going on for a very long time however now it's being done on President Obama's watch and those of us who believed and voted for transparency and accountability are disappointed.  Last week Sen. Tom Harkin (D-IA) called on the president to, "Get a handle on these issues and speak directly to the people."  Somebody in the White House needs to move before we get closer to 2014 or...they are going to hand the GOP a big, wet, juicy...kiss.

Speaking of Kissing

Some of the "A List" of Iowa Republicians are kicking themselves in the behind for kissing off the US Senate seat being vacated by Sen. Tom Harkin (D-IA).  Now, given the falling popularity of the president, they are sensing that the US Senate seat might be in play? Will President Obama drag down the chances of Rep. Bruce Braley (D-IA)?  That's the talk right now. The GOP heavy-weights that took a pass (King, Schultz, Reynolds) might have said "Nyet!" too soon. Now it's up to the "B Team" to work the talk show circut of right wing bat-crap crazies and energize their base.

It's Called Chutzpah

Gov. Terry Branstad (R-IA) last week was crowing about Rep. Bruce Braley being out of touch with Iowans because he's been in Congress for a couple of terms.  Mr. Branstad, the career polititian, knows the meaning of 'chutzpah' because of his Jewish roots and sir it is a bit of the pot calling the kettle black.  Please go sign a bill that makes you...the "Decider in Chief".

Oh...He Already Did

One word...Stunning.  The Democrats in the Iowa Legislature were so busy trying to get the hell out of town that they lined up and passed a flawed "compromise" health care bill which (hold on because this is too good) allows Gov. Terry Branstad to decide who gets an abortion and who does not.  Seriously.  Tucked inside the Department of Human Services Funding Bill is a provision that says if a woman is on Medicaid and desires an abortion...for any reason...the governor of the State of Iowa (through the DHS) must grant that request.  Not the woman, not the doctor, not the hospital...but one of the biggest foes of reproductive rights...Gov. Terry Branstad and "His" Department of Human Services.  I am not sure how I missed this but Sen. Jack Hatch (D-Des Moines) and Sen. Mike Gronstal (D-Council Bluffs) what the hell were you people thinking? 

Sex And the Uniform

In another mind-numbing issue it seems the US Senate would rather have the "chain of command" decide how to handle rape and other sexual misconduct rather than the law.  After all, it's worked so well.  A recent Pentagon study finds that 26,000 troops were assaulted...last year and 50% of them said nothing happened following a report of the incident.  What is amazing about this turn of events is the cadre of male senators who back the military brass.  Guys like Sen. Carl Levin (D-MI) who worries about "preserving military discipline" vs. female Senators such as Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) who said to the all male generals who showed up for a hearing, "You have lost the trust of the men and women who rely on you."  Bam!  Here's the story from the New York Daily News.

Dying to Come to Iowa?

According to a recent story in the Des Moines Register dying in Iowa is pretty cheap and Dubuque is the cheapest city in the state to...pass on.  I'll bet my friends at the Dubuque Convention and Visitors Bureau are crowing about this new piece of news.  No? (BTW, nice video about Dubuque on their site.)

He's Baaaack!

Last week, at a special session, Iowa Democrats selected Scott Brennan an attorney and partner with the Davis Brown Law Firm as the Interm Chair of the Iowa Democratic Party.  Mr. Brennan has served in this capacity before having been elected back in 2006 and serving for two years.  The 50 year old lawyer lives in West Des Moines (Shocking...that they allow Democrats to live there!) knows the ropes and fund raising, I suspect, will be a major goal.  The Democrats have another meeting scheduled in August.  Brennen takes over from Rep. Tyler Olson (D-Cedar Rapids) who is expected to run for Governor.  We'll see...

Facebook Update

So, just how many requests for information from Facebook has the federal government along with state, county and city police departments made during the final six months of 2012?  The answer, according to Facebook in this CBS News story is...wait for it...10,000.  Ten thousand requests in six months from a universe of 1.1 billion monthly users.  Dang, I was hoping they were following me.  I would follow back.  Turns out we have better odds winning the Iowa Lottery Power Ball than showing up in a government Facebook search.

A Great Business Model

Recently a police department here in Iowa made the news when purchasing eight bomb suits at a cost of $25,000 each.  It's not that they didn't already have bomb suits however the bomb suits they had were out of warranty.  The police chief told the media, "I just could not justify putting an officer into a bomb suit that is out of warranty."  Think about it for a minute.  Manufacture a piece of equipment, put a safety warranty on it and wait for the orders to roll in every five years.  Brilliant!  (Both my son and I saw the story but I can not find it anywhere for a link.  Anybody know?)

Save The Garlic!

My friend Larry Cleverley has been all over the news.  Recently Larry became aware of a plan to "improve" a highway intersection which would destroy two or three of the family homes and take the vast majority of his 200 acre farm along with Cleverley Farms, his organic vegetable plot, which serves many of the Des Moines area restaurants and customers at the Downtown Farmers Market.  I wrote about the issue here and when I contacted Larry about the story he said, "The DOT is only telling part of the story.  Since the 2011 improvements the intersection has become much more safe."  I have asked DOT District Engineer Tony Gustafson for a comment.  He wrote me back and said, "I will have that information for you early next week."   Don't worry, I'll share.

Those Loving Christians...

Seems that Gov. Chris Christie (R-NJ) is in hot water and about to be burned at the stake by our friends in the bat-crap-crazy world of Christian Conservatives. They are mad as heck that Gov. Christie didn't stop into their "anti-everybody-but-folks-just-like-us" conference also known by it's inclusive title the, "Faith and Freedom Coalition".  Christie did appear  at the Clinton Global Initiative America's meeting this past Friday and everybody knows THAT group is convened by "The Spawn of Satan", former president Bill Clinton.  Mr. Christie also angered "The Loving Christians" because he appeared on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon this past Wednesday.

Meanwhile in Texas

If you think for one minute that Iowa is wacky...head south to Texas where last week Gov. Rick Perry (R-TX) signed into law a bill that made it legal to say..."Merry Christmas".  Yes, the state that refuses to expand Medicaid to provide health care coverage to hundreds of thousands of poor folks took the time to provide respite to...Christmas.  Glory, Hallelujah!

Partly Personal

Today is Father's Day...  Not as big a deal as Mother's Day but...I'll take it.  My Father, Damon Libbie z"l, died in 1987 and a day does not go by that I don't think about him.  I have a photo of him taken when he was in his late 20's that is just outside of my office.  The photo here was taken in the 1960's in his office at the Lincoln/Thunderbird Assembly plant near Detroit.  Bow tie and all...  On the day he died we had three telephone conversations about "guy stuff".  I needed some instructions about a sump-pump that had been working overtime due to the heavy rains that day.  The next time I saw him I was delivering mouth-to-mouth and chest compressions in his bedroom.  Mom and I talk about him from time to time and it is hard to believe it has been that many years since I told him I loved him.

Listening In

Last week we learned that the federal government acting as Inspector Clouseau is listening in and collecting large amounts of data about...us.  Whoa baby...now THERE is a SURPRISE!  The outrage about this is coming from the left and the right and gives my friends in the conspiracy crowd even more to talk about.  The question is, "Do they have the right?"  Yes and you granted them that right when you demanded safety and increased surveillance because of the boogie man dressed as a Muslim.  And, just like crack cocaine, the government can't give up the surviellance because it's just too easy.  Is it right?  No but that too is the price we pay for allowing this stuff in the first place.  But, then again, it's OK to snoop on those "towel heads as long as you leave me alone". Please...

So, You're A Christian?

I know what that means.  It means that you have an abiding desire to share that fact with the world and that you are a member of the Republican Party and you hate the sin but love the sinner. Blah, blah, blah.  Now, if you say you are a "Compassionate Christian" that means you are a member of the Democratic Party but you still want to "share the good news" in a more lovable way.  It is astounding to me how many people are compelled to use religion in their personal profiles.  Like the "Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval".  Sorry for the rant but I find it...silly and a bit odd.  So much so that I'm changing my personal profile to "Non-Christian". That won't bring any blow-back huh?

Fiscal Conservative Until....

It comes to politics.  Last week Gov. Chris Christie (R-NJ) decided to spend millions of taxpayer dollars on a special election a scant three weeks before the general election so that he, Mr. Christie, could remain on the top of the ballot.  No way was the good governor going to share the playground. I really, really love conservatives they are so...shallow.

Damn...

Last week US Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack said "Nyet!" to running in 2014 for Governor of Iowa.  I am WRONG again!  Damn (again)!  So, what's his angle?  Holding out for a VP slot with Hillary?  Looking for a big time gig with Monsanto?  I dunno but that would have been a classic matchup here in the Hawkeye State.  Damn!  Did Mr. Vilsack nearly gave props to Rep. Tyler Olsen (D-Cedar Rapids) when he said, "It's time for a new generation of leaders for the Iowa Democratic Party"? 

Tyler Olson or Jack Hatch?

Sen. Jack Hatch (D-Des Moines) and Rep. Tyler Olson (D-Cedar Rapids) are moving closer to a political showdown in a (gulp) primary?  Looks like it.  That too is a "damn".  I'm hopeful that we can save time and money to become united, early, behind the candidate who will replace Gov. Terry Branstad (R-IA).  Let the GOP slug it out in the US Senate race (which is going to be too fun to watch) against Cong. Bruce Braley (D-IA) and let's not make the mistake of "eating our young"...or seasoned.

Voters I Dunno Either

So I was feeling pretty good until this morning and there on the front page of the Sunday Des Moines Register the head line that Gov. Terry Branstad is favored by...EVERYBODY.  And my friend Jennifer Jacobs gushed regarding the "harmonious close of a fruitful legislative session". As I wrote before, Democrats caved on health care, property taxes and education and handed Mr. Branstad sure victory in 2014.  The story goes on to say that in every demographic Gov. Branstad is seen in a favorable light.  It's a head shaker.  The winners in the recent legislative session were big out of state businesses, rich folks, insurance companies and those already successful companies seeking taxpayer money to lure them to Iowa.  The poor...lost.  Main Street lost.  Small business lost. Renters lost. Teachers lost. The middle class lost.  Political columnist Kathie Obradovich did leave us with a tantalizing final sentence (one which I've also talked about at length) "If the governor scares everybody out of the pool and then ges out himself, the only one left floating will be Lt. Gov. Kim Reynolds."  Hmmmmm

Then There Is This...

Jennifer Jacobs also reports that in the 1st Congressional District, home base for Cong. Bruce Braley (D-IA) who has been in office since 2007, a full 34% of of them are not sure who he is.  Seriously?  Who does Selzer & Company call...people who live under rocks?  This might explain it: I was having a discussion with a twenty-five year old friend who is in the banking business and I mentioned House Majority Leader, Cong. John Boehner (R-OH) and she had no clue as to who he was.  None.  But, she was able to tell me about various salons that offer great tanning beds.  Weary...

It's Pridefest Weekend

And, it is going to be...wet.  I was going to go and share my support for marriage equality but when I spoke to a friend of mine who said he was sitting this one out because, "The drag queens have taken over".  Something about loads of cash spent to fly in performers from across the country.  "It's outrageous", said my gay friend.  "Our goal should be to show the straight community that we are respectful citizens who live our lives differently but not outlandishly."  He tells me that the whole "drag queen diva movement" is a throwback to another decade when the gay community thought they had to "act out" to get attention.  All I know is that it's raining in Des Moines.

Save Floppy?

Meanwhile thousands of folks have joined a Facebook group started here in the Metro to "Save Floppy".  For those of you who know more about tanning bed salons or are out of the Des Moines Loop...Floppy is a puppet.  The State Hysterical Folks plan on removing the Duane Ellett and Floppy display, which has been active for 22+ years following Mr. Ellett's death in 1987.  This has caused folks to go...loopy.  But more than that many, as my friend Bob Santi said in an email to the supporters, "...you're just rude".  That has been the tone.  It's OK to protest but the awful stuff being written would be astounding if you don't know the background of the writers.  Anyway...I'm out.

Party Personal

Today is my Mother's 93rd Birthday.  Last Thursday, after a full week at Mercy West Lakes in WDM she transferred to Edgewater a Wesley Life facility for physical therapy and rehab for her fractured back.  In the two days she has been there I've seen a marked inprovement.  Being the chief care-giver to Mom, three aged long haired dachounds, a wacky parrot, holding down a full time job and taking care of two houses keeps me pretty busy.  But, I would not trade it for anything.  Having Mom around to share stories and events is well worth the investment of time.  For her birthday we got some flowers and my bride painted this old table to match a chair she has on her deck.  The detail is amazing and Mom is most grateful.  On Tuesday she gets her hair done!  Happy Birthday Mom!  If you are interested here is a link to Mom & Me another blog I do about our adventures.  It's a quick read.
