You simply can not make this stuff up. Politics, and religion for that matter, are such a hot mess you just can't ignore. Welcome to Sunday Morning Coffee a look at those events you might have heard about and, perhaps, some that you may have missed. All brought to you through the eyes of a Leftist, Commie, Red-Tool of Hanoi. We are, by the way, called Progressives now... Grab some coffee!
Mexico
So last week Donald Trump flies to Mexico City to appear presidential and talks about how wonderful the Mexican people are and how he has so many who work for him. Then turns around, drops in on Arizona and doubles down on Mexico, The Wall and immigration. Anybody ready to call this schizophrenic? The definition of which is, "Schizophrenia is characterized by abnormal social behavior." Guess that about sums it up.
Latino Voters
Meanwhile the GOP has got to be worried at how much damage Mr. Trump has done among Latino Voters. A recent poll, Latino Decision, Trump is getting crushed 70%-19% with Latino voters, and he is on pace to receive a record low amount of Latino support. But what should really worry the Republicans is how this is going to play out down ballot and for how long into the future. Approximately 3-of-4 Latino voters (73%) say the Republican Party “doesn’t care too much about Latinos” (45%) or that the GOP is “sometimes hostile towards Latinos” (28%), while just 21% say the Republican Party “truly cares about the Latino community.”
But, who cares...right?
Taco Trucks
Oh, but it gets better. After Mr. Trump doubled down on his call for a wall Marco Gutierrez, a founder of Latinos for Trump (yes there really is such a thing), got nearly as much attention for a comment he made in defending his candidate of choice.
“My culture is a very dominant culture and it’s imposing and it’s causing problems,” Gutierrez said on national television. “If you don’t do something about it, you’re going to have taco trucks on every corner.”
This reminds me of my fellow Jews who become "Jew Haters" and go around bashing Israel or Reform Jews or Kosher Laws or Orthodox Jews...weary. Read that piece again he is saying his culture is "causing problems" and that we're "going to have to do something about it".
But, "taco trucks on every corner"? Bring it...the smell is great and the food is awesome!
Let's turn the clock back to about 1620 and what the Pilgrims might have said....as is outlined in this cartoon by our contributor Tim Lloyd. Priceless.
Colin Kaepernick
Honest, until all of this flap regarding San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick not standing for the National Anthem I did not know he was African-American. Now, that either says I don't pay much attention to the NFL or that I just don't care. What is odd about this is people are much more enraged over Mr. Kaepernick's constitutional right than they are about the ongoing sexual abuse and violence against women that goes on in the NFL. But, hey...it's America where you have every right to free expression but when you use it you become un-American. Weary.
BTW did you hear that one conservative group has said that Kaepernick is not only un-American but that he also broke the law? No really! The American Family Association tweeted out:
So, if you look up that section of the law this is what it reads:
"C) all other persons present should face the flag and stand at attention with their right hand over the heart, and men not in uniform, if applicable, should remove their headdress with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart"
What our friends at the AFA missed in that section is the word..."should" it ain't must. If it were it would fly in the face of the constitution in that same section that talks about freedom of expression. Double weary....
In times like this folks get a little desperate so they start looking around for a candidate they can "trust". Enter Gary Johnson for former two-term governor of New Mexico who is running on the Libertarian Ticket. He was in Des Moines this week and spoke to about 400 people. Johnson said he is for less taxes and smaller government and wants to get the federal government out of education. He's also in favor of a stricter Second Amendment, legalizing marijuana and gay marriage. He's against military interventions and mandatory minimum sentences.
Oh and he doesn't have a chance in hell...however some, who think "less government" is a good thing might swing his way. One question, So, if the feds get out of education that means in Iowa we can finally tell the truth about creation and say the hell to all that silly dinosaur stuff...right? Should fit right in with the future literacy of our nation.
Minimum Wage
The latest to take up the Minimum Wage battle is Wapello County, one of Iowa's poorest counties is a step away from raising its minimum wage to $10.10 per hour by 2019. Why? Survival. One fifth of the country residents live below the poverty line. The ordinance is expected to pass and it moves the discussion from urban to rural where we have the largest percentage of poverty in the state. About time.
Last week I attended the Asian Latino Coalition Meet the Candidates event and I was particularly struck by the candidacy of Sara Huddleston who is running for the Iowa House in District 11 which would be Storm Lake. She has an impressive background of working for progressive ideals and if she can mobilize the Latino vote there it would be a strong pick up for the Democrats and an opportunity to make history by electing the first Latino the the Iowa House. You can send her a check (I did): PO Box 513 Storm Lake, IA 50588.
The Full Grassley
Well, it seems the "Full Grassley" where Sen. Charles Grassley (R-IA) says he visits all 99 Iowa counties each year is correct...sort of. What the Senator doesn't say is that he only has public events in deep red or rural counties and has avoided the states most populated areas. You know, those places where there might be some folks who would actually question his lack of representing our interests.
Partly Personal
Later today it's on to a Taco Party with some multi-cultural friends. I'm just getting in the spirit of a Taco Truck Invasion. Then the Des Moines Flash-Dine event with friends and tomorrow is the Labor Day Parade where I will join other pro-labor types. You know those Commie, Red-Tool of Hanoi, Pinkos! Say, didn't we start off that way?
Have a great Labor Day a Superior Week and thanks for reading!
