This week starts with a look at "Roypublicans" (a term coined by our contributor Tim Lloyd) who now are in control of the GOP. If that gives you pause...it should. Welcome to Sunday Morning Coffee my weekly piece on some of the political things you've seen and some you may have missed. All laced with my commentary..sometimes fun sometimes...not so much. Sit a spell, grab a cup and let's go!

"Roypublicans" 

What will happen later this week is that Roy Moore will be elected to the United States Senate and it seems that the Molester in Chief "45" is super excited to have another groper join him in Washington. What I can not understand is how my conservative Christian friends have decided to line up with these people. Or maybe it's not so hard to figure out. Back in September at a Florence, Alabama rally Moore outlined all the wrongs that he sees in Washington. What he called "spiritual wickedness in high places." He warned of "the awful calamity of abortion and sodomy and perverse behavior and murders and shootings and road rage" as "a punishment inflicted upon us for our presumptuous sins."

In response to a question from one of the only African Americans in the audience — who asked when Moore thought America was last "great" -- Moore acknowledged the nation's history of racial divisions, but said: "I think it was great at the time when families were united — even though we had slavery — they cared for one another.... Our families were strong, our country had a direction."

 

At the same event he referred to Native Americans and Asian Americans as "reds and yellows" and earlier this year suggested that the September 11 terrorist attacks were "divine punishment".

 

This is what we are dealing with. And on Tuesday he will be elected to the United States Senate proving, once again, that "Roypublicans" can say and do anything. Congratulations America. (Cartoon - Tim Lloyd)

 

Taxes, Politics and Churches

 

Back in 1954 the United States adopted the Johnson Amendment to the tax code. It was named such for the author Lyndon Johnson who would go on to become President Johnson. The Johnson Amendment prohibits nonprofit groups who maintain tax exempt status, including churches and charities, from participating in politics. Guess what...language now being debated in the Roypublican Tax Bill in congress removes that language allowing your church, synagogue or mosque the ability to not only preach politics but also donate to candidates who think just like them...and get to deduct the expense. See what you learn here?

 

Al Franken

 

Last week, following the resignation speech by Sen. Al Franken (D-MN), I was approached by three people who said they were switching from the Democratic Party to become registered Independents. WHAT? Here is what they said, "While democrats go after the moral high ground we deny people the right to due process and we look like wimps." To say I was shocked would be an understatement however the three people who said this to me were all women. Let that sink in for a moment. Meanwhile an executive told me that he fears there will be a backlash against women in general which could have a chilling impact on some careers. "I fear that some employers will pass over some very talented young women because they do not want to take a risk that their company could be subject to an accusation; true or not."

 

I don't support either comment however it is stunning that people are coming forward and voicing these thoughts. And, my circle is not that large.

 

I need to focus on shorter stories...sorry!

 

Trump = King = Reynolds = "Doing Just Fine"

 

As long as we're in the weeds we might as well look at the links between some familiar names in Iowa. While the Iowa Democrats are calling on Gov. Kim Reynolds (R-IA) to remove Congressman Steve King (R-IA) from her campaign committee because he is such a hateful individual the Republicans seem to rally around such folks. Today the Des Moines Register released a new Iowa Poll that measured some 800 Iowa voters. Fifty-one percent of them approve of the job Gov. Reynolds is doing. I'm not making this up. Reynolds who sits on the right hand of "45" who turns to King for political decisions gets a majority of voters thinking she is doing "just fine".

Meanwhile more people tend to have a positive view of candidate Fred Hubbell (27%) than others in the field but Iowans don't know much about any of them. The vast majority of voters (57% to 70%) say they don't know enough about the candidates to form an opinion. The favorable numbers among the leading Democrats are: Fred Hubbell (27%). Dr. Andy McGuire (26%), Sen. Nate Boulton (21%), John Norris (18%) and Cathy Glasson (18%). What is interesting is that the negative number for Fred Hubbell stands at 16% several points higher than the others.  Here is a screen snap from the poll. Taxes and Business

 

Some of you know that I do the only daily (M-F) hour-long radio broadcast about business in the Midwest.  (Here is a link to our Radio Blog Interviews) I try, very hard, to steer clear of politics as there is enough "toxic talk radio" going on out there. However the lines between politics and business are getting more fuzzy by the day. Case in point. Business groups in Iowa are lining up to make sure the corporate tax rate is reduced. Last week the Greater Des Moines Partnership and the Iowa Chamber Alliance both released their "wish lists" for the 2018 Iowa Legislature which will convene on 8 January. Each has listed "Tax Reform" as their number one goal. What that really means is a cut in corporate taxes. They site the fact that Iowa has the highest corporate tax rate in the nation at 12% yet Iowa does allow for deductability of federal taxes paid. The pro-business groups say that this is like putting a big sign on Iowa that says, "Don't come here because we'll tax the hell out of you!"  Which...is really not true. Not only are federal taxes deducted for corporations so too is the fact that corporations only pay taxes on goods sold in Iowa. Couple that with the fact that by the time you factor in other deductions the 12% shrinks greatly. Oh and one other thing the business groups won't tell you. Between 2009 and 2016 Iowa awarded over $375 million in research and development tax credits and many of the companies that received those credits pay zero in Iowa taxes.

 

One other thing the business groups want...they want to continue awarding already successful companies more tax forgiveness in the effort to stimulate economic growth.

 

Bottom line: While Iowa wishes to lead the nation in corporate welfare and our state budget is in a mess you poor chumps will pay more and more services will be cut. Watch and see my friends.  They did that to you in 2012 with the famous Terry Branstad Tax Shift on commercial property and it's coming to you again in 2018.

Sorry this is late getting out to you...I was up way too late last night. If you are celebrating Chanukah starts on Tuesday evening with the lighting of the first of eight candles. My brother Yoni has asked me to be with him at Simpson College that evening to meet with and visit with some of the Jewish students to chat a bit about Chanukah. I'm looking forward to that adventure.  While Steve King (R-IA) feels that assimilation is the best thing for America I can share with you it is the worst thing for Jews.  That is exactly what the holiday of Chanukah is all about...resisting assimilation. Maybe the good congressman should be reminded about that...or maybe it won't make any sense to him.

Sunday Morning Coffee - 26 November 2017

While it's hard to believe, it's nearing the end of November. Remember how shocked and full of dread we were last year? That has turned into clawing back and reclaiming progressive seats from county commissions to Congress. Now, a year on, we need to stay active and engaged. More on that...later. Net Neutrality

Here is all you need to know: Ajit Pai who heads up the FCC has said that the common carrier provisions used to ensure net neutrality is “last-century, utility-style regulation” that injects uncertainty into a market now dominated by broadband. Pai, who says he supports an “open Internet,” believes that less regulation in this area is more beneficial to market growth.

Less Regulation = Market Growth - Where have we heard that before? Let's see, education, health care, consumer protection...and even the automotive industry where I remember them battling against seat belts and air bags because "those regulations would hamper growth". No matter if the public wanted them. They care not and soon we'll all be paying more for...less.

Michael Flynn

Perhaps one of the most interesting of tidbits to come out last week was the fact that former national security adviser Michael Flynn and his team of lawyers are no longer communicating with the "hot mess" of attorneys representing "45" and others in the White House. The speculation is that Flynn has "flipped" and is now cooperating with the Mueller investigation. No doubt the people at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue are sweating just a bit. Flynn, who was on the job for a bit over three weeks had long ties to Russia before he joined "45" in the campaign. This truly is bigger than Watergate...much bigger. One has to wonder what "Twitter Storm" will be coming to try to obfuscate what is going on.  Did Flynn flip? The bet is, according to our contributing cartoonist Tim Lloyd...he has. Time Magazine

We came across the memo to "45" yesterday, "No, President Trump you were not being considered as "Man of the Year" or even "Person of the Year" because you need to be either a man...or a person. Clearly sir...you are neither." - You are welcome.

On Saturday former Obama photographer Pete Sousa taunted "45" by sharing 15 Time covers on Instagram that featured President Obama and/or Michelle Obama with the caption, "Someone has a lot of catching up to do!" If you would like to see those covers and the story here is the link to The Hill. But, come back...OK?

Last Years Angst - This Years Hope

Here is a headline for you, "Dem Lead in Generic Ballot Worries GOP". It looks at what is happening as more and more people come to grips that Republicans do not have their best interests at heart...and never have. According to RealClearPolitics Democrats have a 10.7 percent lead in generic congressional ballots. Couple the sinking popularity of "45" with the doubts that Congress is doing anything right for working American families and this is what you get. Now the work that must be done on the local level is take advantage of this discontent and turn it against every governor and GOP controlled state legislature. It worked in Virginia and it can work in Iowa and where you live. But we've got to work it...now!

Let's Talk Economic Growth

The numbers are in and they ain't good. The U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis reported last week that Iowa, under total Republican control, is dead last among the 50 states in economic growth. Dead...last. Iowa growth in the second quarter of 2017 was -.7 percent. The Kim Reynolds (R-IA) administration says "hey, not us" and blame the low commodity prices. But you already know that is only a fraction of the issue. The real issue is the total mismanagement of our budget. The Republicans were handed a nearly $1 billion surplus in 2013 and today they admit they can not balance the budget without huge cuts in services, education, health care and they also needed to borrow $144 million at the end of the budget year.  As Rick Smith wrote in The Iowa Starting Line, "One wonders if former Governor Terry Branstad (R-IA) didn't foresee the budget mess he and Reynolds were creating and decided to abandon ship and take the China gig." 

And, still you want to bring these goofballs back to the legislature so they can continue to wreck havoc on us? Oh...and if you want more of the same look to the Iowa Legislature to cut out the $157 million in "back-fill" dollars they promised to our communities when they did the "tax shift of 2012". You remember, they reduced taxes on commercial property so taxes went up on your personal property. That little "act" was supposed to drive down rental costs...nobody that I know saw a reduction in their commercial or apartment rent. Nobody.

Lies...and we need to send them all packing.

Oh The Lies, They Keep on Rolling In

Last week, on Black Friday, State Majority Leader Bill Dix (R-Shell Rock) released, due to increasing public pressure, the internal report on sexual harassment going on in the Iowa State Senate. And...WOW! Earlier in the week Dix was on the radio telling Iowans that "everything was fine" and there are no more issues with sexual misconduct under his watch. Except he is lying. Senate staff have reported ongoing unwelcome sexual comments some as recent at the 2017 legislative session. Worse, senate staffers said, in the report, they fear naming names because of retaliation by leadership. And, whom might that leadership be? Yep, the same guy who is insisting Kristen Anderson, who won a multi-million dollar settlement from the State Senate (and you are paying it thought your tax dollars) because of sexual harassment, was fired because of work performance. Please remember when you see a state legislator who is from the Iowa Republican Party open his or her mouth to speak they will be lying. The die has been cast.

Yet Democrats Lose the Rural Vote

This week Jason Noble from the Des Moines Register shares the story about how Rural Iowans have turned off the Democratic message. For them it seems like nobody is listening to their woes and that Democrats seem content to focus on only urban issues and leave Rural Iowa to swing in the wind. That, my friends, is what happens when the GOP out performs when it comes to messaging. If you look at the message coming from the Iowa Democrats it should resonate with rural voters where poverty, food insecurity and health care lag. Yet the Republicans have convinced our rural neighbors that we want to dismantle their way of life and are only concerned about people who are "not like them". Nothing could be further from the truth. But the truth does not matter when the "message" the GOP is flinging hits the barnyard.

But, that is turning...and turning quickly as John Norris and others make rural a center piece of their stump. If we are going to win in Rural Iowa we need to take a page out of the book being written by Norris who has deep, deep rural roots as well as an understanding of winning in the urban areas. When announcing, this former USDA staffer, was quick to say he was focusing on Iowans living outside of our urban centers...first. That's smart and effective.

Coming up tomorrow is the Democratic Fall Gala with featured speaker Alec Baldwin. BTW, I am told it is sold out. There will be no lack of "45" bashing going on but my main interest will be to take the temperature of our state and local politics. I'll be seeking out House and Senate candidates and party officials as we look toward 2018 and beyond. Serving on the Polk County Democratic Central Committee has been enlightening. However there are interesting things happening across the state that begs attention. If you are going...let's hook up for a brief conversation. Love to know what's going on in your world as well. 

Not to telegraph too early but following my recent adventure into city politics I'm itching to go to work again. I've come to believe, over the many years of being active, that public service is still a noble endeavor.

Sunday Morning Coffee - The Scary Edition 29 October 2017

It is the Sunday before Halloween and for many of us it gets more scary with each passing day. Welcome to Sunday Morning Coffee my weekly look at some of the political stores you might have seen, or missed, along with my commentary. Sometimes fun, often serious this regular blog is my way of keeping up...and there is so much to keep up with. Grab a cup and let's get started!

They Simply Do Not Care

The next time you visit with your Republican friends ask them why they think their leaders in Congress refuse to take up funding for the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP). Today thousands of kids are at risk of losing health insurance coverage because Congress is way too busy doing...nothing. Funding for CHIP ran out a month ago and states are dipping into any unspent money they have to fund the program on a local level. Some states are considering sending out notices to families letting them know they will not be covered. By the way there are 9 million children in the United States who are on this program. To pay for the re-authorization the GOP wants to gut the Affordable Care Act and charge more for Medicare. Senator Grassley, your "Death Panel" is working.

Scary Attacks on LGBT 

Yesterday Hillary Clinton said in a speech that "The attacks on the LGBT community are striking and scary" She was referring to the "Transsexual Ban" that 45 has introduced regarding the military and the Jeff Sessions reversal on the 1964 civil rights law that protects transgender people from discrimination. She went on to say that "We can not depend on this administration or the Supreme Court to uphold LGBT rights" and said, "I know what it feels like to be torn down and attacked and I want you to know I am with you." This is the latest from the 2016 nominee who is becoming more vocal since earlier this summer saying she would not remain quiet and simply "melt away".

Scary Habit!

Our contributor Tim Lloyd notes that "45" and his lackeys in congress, Faux News and the administration are digging up anything and everything and throwing it at the wall to see what sticks. How true. As late as yesterday a Fox News host, Jeanine Pirro said "it's time" to put former Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton in jail. “It’s time, folks. It’s time to shut it down, turn the tables, and lock her up. That’s what I said. I actually said it. Lock her up,” Pirro said during her show, “Justice with Jeanine.” Weary...so very weary. 

Scary for Consumers and Business

Republicans are doing their best to roll back federal regulations that protect consumers. So far the GOP has rolled back regulatory actions that limited the state’s ability to drug test for unemployment benefits, created new reporting requirements for potential government contractors who have violated labor laws and protected consumer rights to settle disputes with financial institutions in court. Now they want to bar any federal agency from issuing any "substantially similar" regulation without approval from congress. That, in this era, would end consumer protection in a host of areas. A history lesson, do you know why agencies have been allowed to create regulatory acts? Because people were dying from poisons and food illness. Food safety regulations were among the first enacted. Scary Nazis

While you were enjoying football yesterday the Nazis marched in Shelbyvill Tennessee. The rally organized by the League of the South a group named by the Southern Poverty Law Center as a "neo-Confederate hate group" was mostly peaceful. The speech by the groups leader Mitchell Hill was largely drowned out by the counter protesters who were playing "La Bamba" over loud speakers. "La Bamba, you've got to love it! Oh, there was one arrest. Some "White Lives Matter" guy got out of control and the Shelbyville police showed him the seat of a golf cart... No, really...a golf cart.

Scary State

Iowans will remember the day Governor Kim Reynolds (R-IA) sided with the insurance industry over people in need of health care insurance. Last week Democrats in the Iowa House and Iowa Senate lofted an idea to allow some 20,000 desperate citizens to "buy into" Medicaid. According to reports from the Des Moines Register, Sen. Matt McCoy (D-West Des Moines) and Rep. John Forbes (D-Urbandale) pitched the idea as a way for the state to save hundreds of millions of dollars while offering a lifeline to roughly 20,000 Iowans facing the loss of any affordable options for private health-insurance policies. The GOP was swift to come to the aid of the insurance industry: “It’s a half-baked idea that hasn't even worked in the most liberal of states,” House Speaker Linda Upmeyer, R-Clear Lake, said in a press release Friday afternoon. “This is a political ploy that will end up costing Iowans hundreds of millions of dollars and turn choice and control over to the government.”

Brenna Smith, spokeswoman for Republican Gov. Kim Reynolds, called the Democrats' idea "a sugar pill," which would do nothing for Iowans facing sky-high premiums for 2018 coverage.  So, there you have it. On the heels of the failure of Gov. Reynolds to put into place a "stop gap" insurance program she and her friends in the GOP controlled legislature call progress "half-baked" and a "sugar pill" We will all remember...

Scared? Not the Iowa Unions!

It was a "union busting move" that backfired on the Republican controlled Iowa Legislature. Last week Iowa public employees voted overwhelmingly to retain their relationship with their unions. If you remember former Gov. Terry Branstad (R-IA) and his wrecking ball legislature passed a wide-ranging collective bargaining bill that limited what Iowa public workers could bargain for. It also instituted re-certification votes with extremely cumbersome rules – local bargaining units needed a majority of all their members to vote in favor, not simply a majority of those voting. And they won!

From the Iowa Starting Line: 436 of 468 local unions voted to re-certify, most by overwhelming numbers. 33,252 public employees were covered by the local unions up in this election. 28,448 voted in favor of certification, compared to only 624 people who voted against. That amounts to 86% of public employees voting in favor, and only 2% voting against. 4,043 people did not vote, or about 12% of the total eligible. 137, or half a percent, tried to cast a vote, but it was considered “void.”

The voting process itself was made as difficult as possible, and Iowa’s union leaders complained of needless obstacles in the phone and online voting process. Still, 86% voted in favor of re-certification.

While there were some losses this action has energized what had become a somewhat tired effort at unionization here. We can only hope the outrage continues into the 2018 election.

It is just over a week before the Windsor Heights City Council Election. As of last night I have knocked on 903 doors since entering the race at the end of September and will break 1,000 today. That is a bunch of listening and a bunch of voicing my support for a larger commercial footprint in Windsor Heights to help dull the pain of being the second highest property tax community in the Greater Des Moines Metro, to have reasonable and civil conversations and to set up a plan to improve our community public image. Last Sunday my friend Desmund Adams came out of "political retirement" to help knock doors and meet voters:

 

And, they remembered him from his state senate and congressional campaigns. Nice!

Sunday Morning Coffee - 24 September 2017

There are days when I've got so much to share it seems like we're gong to write "War & Peace" but not to fear, we'll keep this edition of Sunday Morning Coffee short because you've got much to do. My name is Michael Libbie and each Sunday I get up...early...and jot down some of the news stories you've seen and, perhaps some that you've missed. All laced with my take. Sometimes serious sometimes fun...it's all about politics. Grab a cup and let's go!

Health Care Debate

For those of you who are thinking the latest attempt to sink the Affordable Care Act is dead...not so fast. For days the White House, McConnell and "45" have been pulling out all the stops to make this happen. Graham-Cassidy is not dead and to give up the fight to protect some 21 million people from losing their health care would be a mistake. In Iowa we know where Sen. Chuck "Death-Panel" Grassley (R-IA) stands, "Hey, it's a campaign promise that that is what is important..." and Sen. Joni Ernst (R-IA) can be expected to fall into line caring more about insurance companies and drug companies than the millions facing an even worse system. Now is the time to reach out and call your senators. Need a list?  Here you go! 

Twenty-One Million

Last week we had this story from the Brookings Institute that 21 million Americans would lose their health care coverage. That number is even HIGHER than the last attempt at sinking Obamacare and it is the first look because we don't have a CBO score yet. The GOP can't wait around for something like the facts...they are busy sticking it to you. A note about that 21 million. Brookings says that may be an "underestimate" because of the difficulty many states will have in putting together their own health care plan. This, my friends, is a disaster. Please call your senator...even if the call falls on deaf ears.

That Good Old Swamp

Once again congratulations to those of you who voted for "45" and honestly thought that he was going to change things and "drain the swamp". So silly. Over the past couple of days we've learned about the tens of thousands of dollars of tax-payers money Health & Human Services Secretary Tom Price in chartering private jets to ferry him about the country. Before that we learned that Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin wanted a government jet for his honeymoon and EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt (who hates the EPA) flies home to Oklahoma on chartered aircraft. All of these guys are worth millions and yet they are using your tax dollars to "jet about". What a lying bunch of thieves. Once again, congratulations "Swamp People" you get what you voted for.  How is all that working out for you?

Take A Knee

The "Take a Knee" campaign is, once again, heating up. This weekend Bruce Maxwell a rookie catcher for the Oakland A's took a knee during the playing of the national anthem. Maxwell is a product of a military family and said he felt that only having the NFL players take all the heat was not broad enough. Meanwhile white American's fail to understand what this is about. It is not about disrespect but it is about the lack of equality and racism that is endemic in our nation. Not sure what part of that you can not understand. Help me out? Meanwhile "45" lashes out. Clearly HE doesn't get it...do you?

Meanwhile in Iowa

While you were sleeping the Iowa Economic Development Authority offered up Tyson Foods a cool $2.4 million in incentives to expand their Waterloo processing plant. On Monday the Waterloo City Council is expected to add to that with their own gift of tax abatement, etc. And, yes, they too will roll over. Let's put this into perspective for a moment. Tyson Foods is the number one meat processor in the nation.Sales last quarter were $9.48 billion. In 2015 the company had a NET INCOME of $1.2 billion. Remember Accounting 101? Net income is AFTER expenses. But, the nice thing is that Tyson has promised to to create 245 new jobs that will pay a minimum of $17.29 an hour. Now, will Tyson hire union workers for construction? Watch this space.

Iowa Budget In the Red - Iowa GOP Celebrates

Last week we learned that Gov. Kim Reynolds (R-IA) will remove nearly $15 million from the state's emergency fund to balance the budget and the GOP is celebrating. Why? Tax receipts came in after the books were closed for fiscal 2017 so the shortfall in income was not as drastic as what was forecast back in July. That number was $50 million short which would have, no doubt, been reason for the Governor to call a special session of the legislature. Now they don't have to do that and it is a WIN for the GOP. Of course let us not forget that this Branstad/Reynolds crowd has so mismanaged our finances and continues to offer up corporate welfare in the multi-millions that they can not afford to fund education, health care, mental health care, roads and bridges. Nice going...and this is the party of "fiscal responsibility"? Yet another lie.

Today I get to hang out at the Latino Festival in the Gateway Park with friends from the Polk County Democrats. Our goal is to register voters and talk about economics, social justice, jobs and equality. Should be a great time and yes...I'll post some photos. Should be a great day to get out. Some sun, some friends and some cerveza. Shaping up to be a great Sunday!

Speaking of the Polk County Democrats last week, during a very long meeting, the body voted to allow Third District Congressional hopeful Heather Ryan to speak at the Polk County Steak Fry on Sunday the 30th. It was a contentious battle with some wanting to punish her for yelling "Asshole" at an event while others said it was not in our best interests to censor her. Polk County Chair Sean Bagniewski threatened, after the vote, that the subject was not finished and said, "Those of you who think this vote is OK better be at the Special Events Committee Meeting on Thursday because they may vote to keep all the Third District Congressional Candidates from speaking." Really? There is deep trouble in the county my friends and the Republicans are loving every minute. They are also loving it that the Dems scheduled the event on Yom Kippur...a fast day for Jews. My friend Will Rogers (former Polk County GOP Chair) would never have let that happen.

Walking, Knocking, Listening - That's what I've been doing for a couple of weeks since announcing my candidacy for the Windsor Heights City Council. I've knocked on close to 300 doors and I've been getting an ear-full. Let me offer you this, "When some distrust we all lose." It's a quote I heard the other day on NPR and it fits in this campaign. Stand For What Is Right - SMC 17 September 2017

If it's Sunday you've gotta get your coffee! My name is Michael Libbie and I get to write Sunday Morning Coffee a look at some of the news stories you've seen and, perhaps, some you have missed. Each laced with my personal comment...it's what I do on Sunday mornings. If this is your first visit...Yay! If you are a regular consumer of SMC welcome back. Let's get started:

Demonstrate Your Moral Courage

My morning started out with a piece from the Detroit News ("home boy" you know) about Darren Walker the president of the Ford Foundation. In a blog he authored he called on leaders to demonstrate moral courage by speaking out in times of crisis especially in light of Charlottesville, racial issues that hobble our nation and the prevailing troubles that come from the elimination of DACA. And he doesn't leave anybody out: 

“Too many of our leaders remain uninterested in healing the wounds of discrimination and prejudice, injustice and inequality. Our ideals have been hijacked at the highest levels, perverted by narcissism and selfishness,” Walker writes. “At the ballot box and in our digital public square, too often, our leaders are rewarded for practicing the divide-and-conquer, dog-whistle politics endemic to our modern era.”

But, he's not done. He puts those leaders of non-profits and civic organizations on notice to actually do something:

“In philanthropy and civil society, we have also been slow to recognize the ways our systems discourage moral leadership. We foundations often hide behind the particulars of our missions, rather than standing up for the deeper values our missions embody. We keep our heads down to avoid making our organizations targets for criticism, especially in the era of social media warfare.”

You, yes you...have a moral obligation to speak up against hate and corruption and evil. It does not matter if you are the local chamber or the local church it is, in the words of Darren Walker, "Your responsibility to act" because confronting inequality and systematic injustice is about right and wrong. It is neither Democrat or Republican. Get busy this is no time to shrink from what is right.

Meanwhile in Des Moines

Somebody explain this to me... Last night about 600 of the faithful gathered for the annual Faith and Freedom Coalition fund raiser and gave resounding ovations to anybody who praised "45" and the wonderful things he is doing to "save our nation". Let that sink in for a moment. Here we have "evangelicals" lavishing praise on a man who has done and continues to do abhorrent things and these "Christians" think he's great. Look, this is an open forum...please explain that to me. I do not understand but then again maybe they should spend
more time actually reading their bible than quoting it. Weary... If you want to read the story here is the piece from my friend O. Kay Henderson and Radio Iowa.

Speaking of DACA

He is back! Our political cartoon from Tim Lloyd speaks to how "some" in the GOP have all of a sudden seen DACA as a good thing. Not all mind you. Our friends who were praying loudly were no doubt praying that "those people" need to be deported so that "Real Americans" could work in the packing plant or the motel or the nursing home or...you go ahead and fill in the blank. The Iowa State Senate and Sex

No doubt some of those same "faithful" applaud the sexual harassment Kristen Anderson had to endure during her tenure as the communications director for the Senate Republicans. After all if "45" can get away with it what's the big deal...right? Except one of the men named in the trial that awarded Kristen $2.2 million for being fired after she complained of the constant harassment just resigned from his GOP job. The key word is "just". It took this long for the "Faithful Republicans" to oust Jim Friedrich who, according to Anderson, used vulgar language and sexual innuendo on a regular basis including watching out the window and giving "hot chic" reports when female lobbyists entered the capital. Maybe we should pray for him...  BTW - That is a photo of Kristen and her husband when they BOTH switched their party affiliation to Democratic during the recent Iowa State Fair.

A Shout Out to the "Fighting Fourth"

Last Sunday I had the opportunity to visit, at some length, with Leann Jacobson the businesswoman from Spencer who is hoping for an opportunity to crush Rep. Steve King (R-IA) (who by the way was busy praising "45" at that fundraiser last night) in 2018. The Fourth Congressional District race isn't as crowded as what we have here in the "Thirsty Third" (Thank you Robert Becker) but it should pull out lots of activity. I offered Leann some names of activists in her (very large) district and I hope you'll give her some time and some effort in this race. I think you will like what you hear.

So, what was she doing in Des Moines if she is running in Northwest and Central Iowa? She was meeting and greeting during a very successful Progress Iowa Corn Feed. It's what we do.

There Is No Doubt...

In my mind that any of these people will do a better job at healing and restoring sanity to the State of Iowa. We have a complete and total disaster on our hands when it comes to fiscal irresponsibility, our natural resources, jobs, wages and education and Gov. Kim Reynolds (R-IA) has her finger print on the entire mess. With us at the Progress Iowa Corn Feed was Cathy Glasson, who by the way, stayed for the entire event, Fred Hubbell who gets better and better on the stump, Ross Wilburn who is new to the race and former Mayor of Iowa City, John Norris who knows policy and rural issues better than anybody, Jon Neiderbach who is a champion of equality and fiscal responsibility, Andy McGuire who has become a leading voice on health care and articulates that message well, Nate Boulton who has a compelling story and broad union support and Brent Roske who is running as an Independent and who gave some solid reasons as to why.

I thought it was magnanimous of my friend Matt Sinovic to include Roske in the mix. It shows a fairness of thought.

Polk County Democrats

Then there is the Polk County Democrats who, on a vote by a committee and not the body, decided to ban Third District hopeful Heather Ryan from speaking at the upcoming Polk County Steak Fry. The embattled chair (or so I am told) Sean Bagniewski tells me that debate on this issue will come before the Polk County Democrats tomorrow during our regular meeting. Heather repeatedly called Rep. David Young (R-IA) an asshole during the Democratic Wing Ding last month. That didn't set well. Oh...so what is Heather doing? She told me she is "moving on" and holding her own Free Speech Wiener Roast at the same time as the Steak Fry. It's classic Heather Ryan and if you want to go here is where you can RSVP.

That Jewish Thing

Meanwhile the Polk County Democratic Steak Fry will be held on Yom Kippur the holiest day of the Jewish Calendar. It's a complete fast day so even if I could go I'd have to say no to the (non-kosher) steak. Good planning huh? I'll be with my congregation in Mason City. The Democrats in Polk County have said they will be "more careful about planning in the future". They could, as the IBEW did during the Labor Day Picnic, offer up some Hebrew National Hot Dogs at next year's event.  Hey, I'm just trying to help and I'll pray for you.

Partly Personal

Is there a better parade than the Beaverdale Fall Festival Parade? No, really, it's got real bands, some cool displays, horses and candy! We went along yesterday and walked with Skip Moore who is in a fight for his Des Moines City Council seat and it was great to see so many people lining the route. Best deal was that my granddaughter Jovie got to throw candy from a real fire truck. She's becoming quite a "parade pro".

It took me a day longer than I thought to file my papers for the Windsor Heights City Council election coming up on 7 November. It took a day longer because I was waiting for Rosemary to get back the the
Polk County Election Office...she had Monday of last week off. You see it is Rosemary who notarized my signature. The rules are that to become a candidate one must have 18 signatures on the nomination petition. I had over 60. That's not bragging but it does mean that I spoke to lots of people prior to becoming an official candidate. I find getting out and listening to be one of the best parts of campaigning. It's the Labor Day Weekend Edition of Sunday Morning Coffee with stories you may have seen or might have missed all laced with my comment...which is always spot on...right? Sometimes fun mostly serious it's intended to get us thinking about progressive answers to regressive political and social ideas. Ready? Grab a cup and let's go!

North Korea - Trump's Best Friend

Over the past several hours it's been reported that North Korea has tested yet another nuclear device. It's the sort of thing "45" needs right now as the circle tightens on the corruptness of his campaign and misguided administration. Fear is a powerful motivator and we've got it going this weekend.

Harvey and "45"

Yesterday we had a "do over" in Houston as "45" made another visit to the hurricane ravaged city...the 4th largest in the United States. He had gotten some push-back from a lackluster performance earlier in the week when he didn't interact with citizens who were impacted by the disaster. Our contributor Tim Lloyd penned yet another "Letter Home to Mother" from our favorite GOP Voter, I.M. Stupid:

But, there was a return visit and this time "45" loaded a truck with supplies, posed for selfies and signed autographs. The one thing missing in all of this? Empathy. But, then again, these people are "those people".

Dreamers Pack Your Bags

With every passing day "those people" are going to have to get comfortable to the reality they will be stripped of their ability to support the United States with their taxes, service to the nation, careers and loyalty. With "45" getting set to repeal President Obama's Defered Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) as early as this week we, as a nation, have sunk to a new low. Supporters of this outrageous move point to fear and identity politics to prove their point. DACA becomes a freeway for "thugs" and "gangs" for anti-immigration "expert" Ned Ryun who, in this opinion piece confuses DACA with a wacky support of "The Wall" and crime and welfare. What Ned does not want to talk about are the thousands of young people who were brought to this nation who are now in the military, wearing lab coats, working in our communities as strong members of our society. No, he and "45" want to lump "those people" into one bowl...and flush them.  

Bill Northey to the USDA

I know this is going to be hard for you to believe but I am a friend of the Iowa Secretary of Agriculture, Bill Northey (R-IA). For those of you who are dumb-founded at that let me share that it is personal and not political. Over the years I've found him to be, not only a man of deep faith, but also doing the best he can given the limited resources he gets. Given that it looks like Sec. Northey is on his way to the United States Department of Agriculture in the area of crop promotion. It's a good fit and I wish him well. Now who gets appointed by Gov. Kim Reynolds (R-IA) will get interesting.

Iowa You Are Lost

Speaking of faith for just a moment, Iowa has lost its moral compass. The reality that this state denies care and protection to our young and our old is a sin worthy of the hottest places in Hell. Leading the charge into the Inferno of Dante is none other than Gov. Kim Reynolds, Rep. Linda Upmeyer (R-Clear Lake), Sen. Charles Schneider (R-WDM), Rep. Chris Hagenow (R-Windsor Heights). These are the people who craft legislation and policy that has destroyed our state's ability to pay for education, for the health care and welfare of our eldest citizens, for those 500,000 people on Medicaid. This is what they have created by giving already huge, successful corporations millions of dollars in tax credits, tax abatement and other forms of corporate welfare.

We already realize that our public schools are in trouble because Iowa can't pay its bills. We, last week, learned that the State will no longer fund travel for the Iowa Office of the Long-Term Care Ombudsman. The cut in the budget means that virtually all travel by its employees to nursing homes and assisted living centers across the state is over. I guess that means the Iowa Department of Inspections and Appeals will have to take up the slack?

Furthermore, in the same article for the Iowa Starting Line written by Randy Evans we are reminded that Iowa eliminated funds for public health programs for people diagnosed with epilepsy and for children with autism. Money was eliminated for programs that provided vision screenings in our schools and hearing aids for children (unlike many states, Iowa does not require health insurers to cover these costs).

Yet we can hand out millions to successful corporations because having Apple or Microsoft or Google in Iowa is a win.

Overtime in Iowa

Now that we've stopped paying for overtime among government workers who put in more than 40 hours a week...what could go wrong? The intended purpose is to put these workers on notice that their lazy, shiftless lifestyle is coming to an end and they better be looking for jobs outside of government. In all,167 job classifications, including nurses, public defenders and social workers, can now be required to work more than 40 hours a week without additional pay or comp time. You see, that's what your friends (all mentioned above) believe: "Government is bad unless that same government is greasing the palm of my wealthy friends." Oh, and this cost cutting move will save Iowa $5 million a year. More money to lavish on the already wealthy. Sick...truly sick.

Tax Cuts And the Truth

It should be of no surprise that Gov. Kim Reynolds (R-IA) and her ilk are standing in line to support even more corporate welfare with their pandering to cut the corporate tax rate from 35% to 15%...it's what their leader "45" would like to do nationwide. They say it will create jobs and better paying wages. It is all a lie...all of it. There is not one shred of evidence that lower tax rates create more jobs or higher pay. In fact it's just the opposite.

IOB 1 Sept 2017 Corporate Tax Rates

The cut from above relates the story about a recent review of 92 publicly traded U.S. companies with an effective tax rate of 20%. You might want to listen...because as you will learn...The Institute for Policy Studies (IPS) calls the idea a "myth," noting that corporations already enjoy much lower effective tax rates, thanks to loopholes and tax breaks. 

Look Out Iowa Cities...More Cuts Coming

Remember the "tax-shift" that former Gov. Terry Branstad (R-IA) dreamed up during the 2013 legislative session? It was, and is, touted as a bi-partisan tax cut and the silly Democrats went along.  The deal was the legislature rewarded landlords with a tax cut and then shifted that tax burden to homeowners. One of the selling points to Democrats was that these savings would allow landlords to reduce their rents and make housing more affordable. Bullshit...didn't happen. Anyway...To get it to fly the legislation set up a "back-fill" of hundreds of millions of dollars that went to Iowa cities to make up for the property tax loses. Yes, the city you live in gets your tax money to pay for the corporate tax cut handed out in 2013. But, that was when the State of Iowa had...money. Now legislators are considering taking those dollars back because Iowa is in such a financial bind. Guess what happens...if that happens?  Landlords still get their gift and if you pay rent, or homeowner taxes...they will, once again, go up.  We pointed out that it was a lousy deal and a tax-shift back in 2013...and it truly is.  Suckers...

Let me be clear, I have always thought it better to fight FOR something than fight against something. So, when I write about the horrors imposed on us by the Republicans it is intended to give you ammunition, if you will, to fight for positive and progressive ideas that move our communities and state forward...not backward. When we all share in the wealth of the nation we all win. If you want to hear more about that idea give a listen to this interview with Charlie Wishman from the Iowa Federation of Labor AFL/CIO about the history of Labor Day and the state of labor unions today....it is sobering.

Speaking of labor...tomorrow is Labor Day and I get to take part in the Annual Labor Day Parade that stretches from downtown to the State Fairgrounds. I'll be walking with my friend Theresa Greenfield who is running for the United States Congress here in the Third District. See you tomorrow...

Today I'll travel to Mason City to attend the funeral of Ruth Newman. She was a staunch supporter of the little synagogue there as well as the State of Israel. She faithfully attended services anytime the doors were open. She came to every Torah Study Session (Midrash) and offered insight and input. She funded speakers who would come and talk about Israel and engage the Iowa population. She was a bright light...and cancer snuffed it out last week. Oh...and she wasn't Jewish. Baruch Dayan Emet...

Pardons, Politics and Poop - SMC 27 August 2017

So much going on that it sometimes numbs the mind...but not to worry. It's time for Sunday Morning Coffee with some of the stories you've seen and others you may have misses all laced with my commentary. Sometimes fun...often serious grab a cup and let's see where this takes us. Also, if you have a wish to comment you may do so. Let's go!

Pardons

Perhaps the biggest future story is the pardon of convicted criminal Joe Apario. For decades Apario used his position to jail thousands of men and women in conditions that rival some third-world country. For that he was lauded as a "law and order" kind of guy. However it was when he started targeting "brown people" that Apario got in trouble with the Constitution. You know, that pesky document "law and order" types love to quote and then trash. The court filed an injunction to make Apario stop his illegal "immigration round ups". But, he kept it up. A federal court subsequently found that after the order was issued, Apario's office continued to detain "persons for further investigation without reasonable suspicion that a crime has been or is being committed." That led to a contempt of court conviction in July of this year. Last week "45" gave him a pardon.

Notice I wrote in the first sentence "future story" that is because "45" has now blown a dog-whistle that signals to Manafort, Kushner, Trump Jr. and the lot of them they have nothing to fear from the Robert Mueller investigation. Nothing...

Lowest of the Low

Never before in the history of presidential poll numbers have we seen approval ratings as low as what "45" now enjoys. Nice going...suckers.

The Arizona Speech

For those of us who enjoy history the speech given by "45" last week in Phonex was, in a word, chilling. For over 80 minutes "45" went to great lengths to connect with his base, vilify the media, cast blame on the Senate and specific GOP senators. Some have called it "unhinged" for its rambling nature and for how different it was then his forced teleprompter speeches. No, this was classic and it was chilling. The gestures, the accusations, the belittling, the length of the speeches have been played out before by a little man from Bavaria who went on to lead his nation to destruction. Yep, we've seen this before...

Confederate Flags

What may be the last U.S. Confederate flag maker, Alabama Flag & Banner, says business is booming as sales of the rebel flag have skyrocketed since Charlottesville and the actions of many states, counties and cities to remove rebel statues and landmarks. Flag sales had also surged following the murder of nine people at the hands of Dylann Roof. It was then when many retail establishments decided to quit selling the symbol.     

Meanwhile the Resistance

Tomorrow a ten-day march from Charlottesville to Washington D.C. will take place. The action, say organizers, is to confront white supremacy and to demand removal of "45" from office. "The March to Confront White Supremacy," is set to start in Charlottesville Monday, Aug. 28 and end in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday, Sept. 6. Organizers say the march will be followed by an occupation of Washington, D.C. with daily nonviolent demonstrations.

"This is the time to confront white supremacy in our government and throughout our history. We demand that President Trump to be removed from office for allying himself with this ideology of hate and we demand an agenda that repairs the damage it's done to our country and its people," the website for the march reads. Gosh, what could go wrong in this hyper-charged environment?

Apple

One of the reasons given by Gov. Kim Reynolds (R-IA) for the millions of dollars handed off in tax credits and incentives to Apple was this, "Well, it's Apple". Yes, it is Apple and while the deal calls for Apple to give $100 million to the City of Waukee for any number of community projects I'm sure the folks in Humboldt, Mason City, Boone and Creston might have liked a piece of the pie. Look, I'm all for economic development but when a cash strapped state gives a company that has billions of dollars in reserves millions to build and hire up to 50 employees at $29.85 an hour you've got to question the logic or at least the lack of transparency. The "deal" went from being "sniffed out" on Wednesday afternoon to a done deal on Thursday morning. But, not to worry the public will have input come 2018.

Free Speech & The Polk County Democrats

Sometimes folks get their underwear in a knot when a press release and admonishment would do the trick. My friend Heather Ryan is running for Congress in Iowa's 3rd Congressional District. A couple of weeks ago during the Democratic Wing Ding in Clear Lake she said that Rep. Steve King (R-IA) and Rep. David Young (R-IA) were "assholes". OK, a little strong...but her Twitter handle is @LoudAndLiberal and she is both. The context of her speech makes clear that she didn't simply blurt it out but that her words were attached to how both congressmen vote. What did the Polk County Democrats do? They banned her from speaking at the upcoming Polk County Steak Fry...a Democratic gathering.  No, I'm not joking. This is how Democrats react...they eat their own and their steak. Check the video...

 

One other thing. I know of a young woman in the Des Moines Metro that called, in public, former Gov. Terry Branstad (R-IA) a "rat bastard" yet she was allowed to run for a seat in the Iowa House with the full endorsement of the Polk County Democrats. I guess there is a difference in being a "rat bastard" or an "asshole"?  Really people?

BTW: The Windsor Heights Democrats will hold their monthly meeting on Tuesday at 6:15PM at Saison Kitchen & Pub (old Mustards Location) on University Avenue here and Heather Ryan is the featured speaker. Come on down...should be interesting.

Partly Personal

This week is the ramp-up to Labor Day. For some it's a three or four day holiday and there isn't anything wrong with that...get out there and enjoy. It's also the time when we remember those who struggled and today continue to struggle for the working men and women of this nation. So, while you sit in the boat or under a tree during Labor Day you might hearken back to the day when there were men, women and children working 60 to 70 hours a week for low pay, no time off, no rights of regress for brutal conditions...zip. (Sort of where Iowa is headed to again?) So, on Labor Day join with us at the Labor Day Parade as we make a march for workers.  The Parade is at 11 am. (Parade line up at 8 am) March from Iowa Capitol to State Fairgrounds. Picnic for members, their families and special guests at Union Labor Park, 4640 Morningside Dr. Des Moines. noon to 5 pm. It was Back-To-School for our now SIX grandchildren...loved the photos on Facebook. Treasure them...the time goes by so quickly.

This week I'll file papers to run for the Windsor Heights City Council. It is not a partisan race but it is all about the possibilities and progress the citizens here should be enjoying but far too often get derailed. Over the past several weeks I've been on the phone drumming up conversation about what issues are important to voters here and it all boils down to fair and equal treatment, property taxes, safety and economic development. Nope, we didn't get $100 million from Apple but the power to unleash some positive progressive development opportunities here is staggering. Now all we have to do is...get it done.  And, yes...still working on the website. Gosh there is a bunch of stuff to do!

Oh, and it's the final home game of the season for the Iowa Cubs....drat!

Crazy About Politics - Sunday Morning Coffee 6 August 2017

Gather around some great political news this week and more to look forward to. It's Sunday Morning Coffee that bright spot in an otherwise dull world of politics (I know...making that up!). Here are some stories you've no doubt seem and some you may have missed all laced with my own (correct BTW)) commentary. Get comfortable and grab a cup...remember it can be hot.

What? A Grand Jury!

Last week we learned the Robert Mueller has impaneled a grand jury which means stuff is going on the record. But it is more than that. It means that Mr. Mueller is indicating that he has found evidence of criminal activity. You don't gather together a grand jury for show. This is serious and, in a very real way, helps insulate Mueller from "45" and any attempt at removing him as special prosecutor. Of course "Team Trump" led by some real legal clowns have said any expansion in the investigation will be met with "increasing resistance". Words that he must have learned from...us.

Strangely Quiet

Notice something over the past 72 hours? The Twitter account for "45" has gone pretty much silent. Another show of strength from Gen. John Kelly the new Chief of Staff who is in the White House to instill some order and some sanity following six crazy months of "45" blowing off about nearly everything in 140 characters. An interesting fact about Kelly. It is said that after every promotion he has read a book about the failures and the advances of a fictional British General during WWI. The Wall Street Journal says that Kelly reads "The General" written by C.S. Forester in 1936 as a reminder of "...what to avoid as a leader". Think of that, somebody in the White House...reads! Meanwhile it seems all quiet on the Western Front.

The Wall

There was some movement last week as "45" attempts to make good on another campaign promise to build a wall between the United States and Mexico to keep those "bad hombres" out. The Department of Homeland Security wants to waive environmental rules to build the wall. Also the Washington Post shared a transcript of a phone conversation (think leaks) between "45" and the president of Mexico Enrique Pena that the wall is just a political stunt. "Believe it or not, this is the least important thing we are talking about, but politically it might be the most important thing we are talking about." He also said that President Pena should not say that his country is not going to pay for the wall but that he should say, "We can work it out". "45" is a fraud, but you knew that.

Meanwhile the Statue of Liberty was brought up last week. Stephen Miller that strange little fellow who is the Senior White House Aide (who look natural dressed in an SS military uniform) dismissed the fact the Statue of Liberty is a national symbol of embracing immigration. He told the White House Press Corps that the poem by Emma Lazarus was not part of the original statue, a gift from France but a "symbol of American liberty lighting the world". Technically he is correct about the sonnet. "The New Colossus" written by Jewish immigrant Lazarus in 1883 was part of a marketing campaign to raise funds for a pedestal for the statue. Lazarus died four years later and the poem was forgotten until 1901 when it was found in a book. She brought it to the attention of the world and that plaque was then added to the statue. Still what kid (who went to school back in the day) doesn't equate that work of art with the Statue of Liberty. It was written at a time when the United States was hell bent on keeping out Jews, the Irish, the Germans...anybody that wasn't "just like us". It is fitting and proper no matter what Obersturmbannfuhrer Miller says.

Meanwhile in Iowa

There are more and more Iowans coming to the realization that Gov. Kim Reynolds (R-IA) is "in over her head". She attached herself at the hip of former Gov. Terry Branstad (Who left Iowa in a mess and dumped the remains into the lap of Reynolds) and that is what now comes back to bite her. Biggest hurdle: The deepening fiscal mismanagement that she, by attaching herself to Branstad, helped create. And, she has no way out. Meanwhile Democrats are salivating to, at every turn, remind voters that the reason the state piggy-bank is empty is because the Branstad/Reynolds Team shoveled out millions and millions of dollars to already successful companies who then go on the "promise" they will create jobs...sometimes as few as 27...in trade for millions. It is malfeasance of the highest order and Democrats will use it daily to remind voters as to why it seems only the already wealthy get cake and they are left with crumbs.

Anti worker groups like the Iowa Association of Business and Industry, Farm Bureau and the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) will gear up to back the corporate welfare, environmental pollution and suppression of voting Reynolds and her gang are known for. It's already becoming very busy.  

The Wing Ding

It started out as a little gathering of Democrats in Clear Lake and it has become a big deal. It happens this Friday, starting at 5PM at the Surf Ballroom. Now in its 14th year the Iowa Democratic Wing Ding is a major fundraiser for several northern county parties. Headliners this year include Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-MD), Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) and Jason Kander the former Secretary of State in Missouri who, no doubt, looks toward 2020. I get to be there for only a brief period of time before heading over to Mason City for Shabbat Services at Adas Israel. Wonder if I can get Jason to go with? Partly Personal

So much going on! Today is the birthday of my bride! Yay! I reminded her of that last night and she looked at me and said, "Oh my...I forgot!"  Once upon-a-time it was Georgie Birthday Month where there was a daily celebration every day during August. Perhaps we need to go back in the direction.  Happy Birthday Georgie...you are great and thank you for being a terrific person, loved by so many. Goodness is in your soul.

Today marks the second anniversary of my relationship with a guy I've never met in person. Two years ago Tim Lloyd joined Sunday Morning Coffee as a regular contributor of cartoons and the very funny "Letters from the Front by I.M. Stupid". Tim has been a faithful part of this adventure and I thank you my friend. Some day we'll have to meet up... Courvoisier for two?

Last week I cleared a major hurdle in running for public office. As my friend Sen. Robb Hogg (D-Cedar Rapids) has said this is the Summer of Citizenship and time for progressive people to get involved in a major way to move our cities, counties, state and nation forward. I live in Windsor Heights, often the butt of jokes and sarcasm regarding speed limits, sidewalks and any host of things folks seem to want to throw at us. I'd like to see that image change and the only way I can see that happening is if people running for our City Council take up the challenge to run "for something" rather than "run against everything". Over the past week I've been visiting with folks here, and outside of our city, and hope to make a formal announcement for City Council very soon. Key to this campaign will be a focus on inclusion, public safety, economic development and easing the tax burden of our citizens. Hang on...

It's All About The Base

While the United States Senate and the United States House of Representatives attempt to figure out how to screw the working class and cut a sweet deal with the wealthy the President of the United States is captivated with women and blood. Yesterday "45" once again came out ripping away at MSNBC "Morning Joe" hosts even in the face of bipartisan criticism of his initial attack earlier in the week. On Saturday the president tweeted:

That was, of course, following his return to talking about women and blood...which also was fabricated:

Yep, this is the guy who is leading the "free world". What a disaster and congratulations voters.

Independence Day

That is what we once called the 4th of July...Independence Day. Today we just give it a number and a reason to sell mattresses and cars at "deep discounts". We called it Independence Day because it reminded us of the struggle to rid ourselves of a tyrant who had nothing in common with the people whom he ruled over. Seems like what we have going today. There is no one on the planet that is more patriotic than my wife. Yesterday she asked, with a straight face, "So how hard is it to get a Canadian Citizenship?" It's come to this. We can only hope that this Independence Day we can forge our independence from what has become the laughing stock of the planet. This revolution starts with remembering what the House and Senate and local GOP leaders have done to our nation and begin the process of removing them with the vote.

Death Panels

Remember when Sen. Charles Grassley (R-IA) warned Americans of the "Death Panels" that really never existed? Soon, if the Senate gets its way with America those "death panels" will be back. Not so much as Chuck pulling the plug on grandma but by gutting Medicaid and scaling back Medicare the result will be the same. What is worse is that "99 County Chuck" is too timid to simply oppose the legislation telling us that he is still studying the bill. These people can't wait to screw with the the promises of true leaders.

Dumb Panels

Your government is spending thousand chasing after a ghost. Remember when "45" lamented that he had not won the popular vote because, "...millions of people voted illegaliy"? That lie fostered an election security panel where the Secretary of State for Kansas (of all goddamn places KANSAS!) was put in charge of "securing the vote" when every voice on the matter said that lie was a lie. However this panel has requested from each state their voter rolls and over half of the states said.."Nope, ain't gonna do it." Why? Because, frankly, we do not trust you. Medicare For All

One thing this health care debate has fostered is a renewed interest in scraping our current rip-off system of health insurance and replacing it with a system of Medicare for All. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) has promised that he will roll out legislation that would do just that...and it may have legs. Think of it this way: Medicare is expanded to provide care for each person in the United States. It is paid for by a series of taxes, doing away with the social security "cap" and more. This does not do away with health care insurance but it does make that cartel smaller. Health insurance companies can then sell "Medicare Supplemental Policies" to expand coverage on the basics. Wellness is created, doctor visits are covered and the nation can join the other industrialized countries already providing health care to its citizens. Maybe then I can talk my wife into staying here.

Low Unemployment - Low Wages - Big Corporate Gifts

Today my friend Donnelle Eller from the Des Moines Register has a great article (without a conclusion) about how low unemployment in Iowa is hurting the economy. If you want to read it...here you go. The issue, she reports, is that the unemployment rate here is 3.1 percent which means it's nearly impossible to find qualified workers because nearly everybody who can work...is doing so. Yet tax receipts are down. Consumer are not spending at the rate we did pre-recession. Sure, farm income is down because of low commodity prices but that's not why folks in Fort Dodge are not spending their cash. Here is what really is going on.  Iowa prides itself on being a "low wage state" and our legislature has done everything in it's power to make sure we stay this way by rolling back the minimum wage increase passed by local governments. It is a race to the bottom. Meanwhile corporations who are raking in millions of dollars in gifts from the Iowa Economic Development Authority to create (or retain) a scant number of jobs pocket the cash and invest their winnings elsewhere rather than boost the wage rate of their workers. Last year weekly wages, adjusted for inflation, rose a meager 0.8 percent. From the story: "Last year, Iowa's real weekly wages climbed less than $10 to $864. Nationally, wages were mostly flat at $1,031 in 2016." In other words for all the hand-wringing going on among employers and the legislature they are just fine at keeping wages low in Iowa. Until that changes expect more cuts in things like education, health care and food assistance. Sorry suckers...you voted for less and now you've got it.

The Crowded Field

Last week I got the opportunity to listen to Paul Knupp who is actively campaigning for a spot to oust Rep. David Young (R-IA) in the Third Congressional District. His theme is Rebuild America and his focus is on infrastructure to broadband to health care. He joins a crowded field of announced candidates including Heather Ryan and Cindy Anxe. Theresa Greenfield will announce on Wednesday. I also heard from Democrat John Norris who will have an official launch of his gubernatorial campaign next Sunday. John has an impressive background in policy and government. He also has something a bit unique in that crowded field...Norris is lifting up his rural roots and going right after the value systems of Rural Iowans. Yesterday Davenport City Council Alderman Mike Matson ended his campaign saying that raising millions of dollars was too large a mountain to climb. Mike is a great person and I'll miss him on the campaign. This will be an interesting season.

Partly Personal

This Independence Day I get to walk with not only the Urbandale Democrats but also the Windsor Heights Democrats in back-to-back parades. Should be a great opportunity to show some unity and strength.

Meanwhile the Iowa Democratic Party lost it's chair. Derek Eaton the newly elected party chair announced this week he is stepping down for health reasons. His position will be filled, for the next several weeks by vice-chair Andrea Phillips. A special election will be held on 22 July. Loads of names being mentioned including Matt Paul, Bill Brauch, Chris Hall and Laura Hubka. Whatever is decided we need to remember to march lock-step and renounce what is ruining our great state.

Today I get to write a letter to the Windsor Heights City Council and the Des Moines Register in support of sidewalks. I honestly can't believe that something like this needs to be done...really I can't. I understand change is difficult for some...ask Galileo.

Sunday Morning Coffee - Politics and More 4 June 2017

We live in a crazy world. This morning we are waking up to the terror attacks that happened in London and the responses from our
president and others. Predictably Mr. Trump took the opportunity to push for his "travel ban" and then condemn the Mayor of London with this tweet: "At least 7 dead and 48 wounded in terror attack and the Mayor of London says, "There is no reason to be alarmed!". The guy never misses an opportunity to look foolish because that is NOT what the Mayor said. Welcome to Sunday Morning Coffee my personal look at some of the political news you may have seen or might have missed all laced with opinion. Why? Because it's Sunday Morning! Grab a cup and let's go!

Paris and Pittsburgh

Several hundred Republicans got together in Washington D.C. for a "Pittsburgh Not Paris" rally. The irony they were gathering at Lafayette Park may have been lost but it was quite the event. Attendees were told that other protests were in the area by those upset with Trump pulling out of the Paris Climate Change Accord and that if confronted they should just sing, "This is Our Land". The event was organized by the Fairfax County Republican Committee and the Republican Party of Virginia. Forty-Five did not attend...he went golfing. Also lost on the group was the fact the mayor of Pittsburgh announced that his city would move forward and hold to the Paris agreement. Bill Peduto tweeted, "The United States, Syria, Nicaragua & Russia in deciding not to participate in the world's Paris Agreement. It's now up to the cities to lead." 

Leadership

Meanwhile nine states have formed the United States Climate Alliance — which, so far, includes 30 mayors more than 80 university presidents and more than 100 businesses. The nine states are California, Connecticut , Hawaii, Massachusetts, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont and Washington. They are also negotiating with the United Nations to have its submission accepted alongside contributions to the Paris climate deal by other nations. When asked about the founding of the alliance in a call with reporters, California governor Jerry Brown just about summed it all up. “This is an insane move by this president,” he said. “The world depends on a sustainable future. It’s tragic, but out of that tragedy I believe the rest of the world will mobilize, will galvanize our efforts.”  That is exactly what is happening. No word if Iowa will join up. Gov. Reynolds was too busy dancing and eating pork at the Ernst Roast & Ride. (Watch Out For Polar Bears - Cartoon by Tim Lloyd)

Isolated

I'm not sure if this is the goal but it is becoming more and more clear that the rest of the world is "moving on" without the leadership of the United States. It is tragic that our nation has become the butt of jokes and our standing on the world stage has been reduced to a cartoon. However 36% of you love it and "Making America Goofy" seems to be just fine with you.

Math

I've come to realize that being a Republican requires one to ignore not only science but also math. Last week a "shocking" story came out in the Des Moines Register saying the new manufacturing tax break, touted by the GOP and business groups like the Iowa Association of Business and Industry, could cost the state $80 million more than projected. This is on top of a nearly $250 million shortfall that has already forced lawmakers to cut $118 million in state programs and withdraw $113 million from reserve funds. In addition, state budget directors are concerned that tax revenue is down.

Lemme see if I can help. When the only economic effort the State of Iowa concerns itself with is monumental tax breaks for already successful companies, a call to lower taxes on existing businesses and passing tax shifts from business to homeowners you can't make the numbers work. It's time to end this crazy cycle and put the people of Iowa before phony economic development schemes. When Iowa is writing checks to already rich and successful companies and cutting mental health care, education and a host of other critical programs it is not sustainable. But it's that tricky math thing.

Boone County Democrats

This weekend while Sen. Ernst (R-IA) chummed it up with Vice President Mike Pence and others on the Roast and Ride the Boone County Democrats held a Picnic for the People. About 200 people showed up for the event where eight gubernatorial hopefuls lashed out at former Governor Terry Branstad and Governor Kim Reynolds and their failed economic policies. Speaking at the event were John Norris, State Senator Nate Boulton (D-DSM), Dr. Andy McGuire, State Representative Todd Prichard (D-Charles City), Cathy Glasson, Davenport Alderman Mike Matson, John Neiderbach and Brent Roske (an "Independent" but allowed to speak at the event). It was quite the deal and, of course, the Republicans could not contain themselves from being small and spiteful. Jeff Kaufmann, Chair of the Iowa GOP, wrote to the faithful, "The difference couldn't be more clear: more than 1,300 Republicans gathered for the second consecutive day celebrating the progress we've made and touting the things we seek to accomplish, while Democrats are holding a meeting across town in a telephone booth on Elm Street, stuck in the past." Yeah...he's feeling the heat.

Cathy Glasson...Hmmmmm

This one slipped past me. Cathy Glasson is a nurse. She is also from Johnson County and a labor union president. I know, or have met, each of those people listed above but not Ms. Glasson. My only engagement with her was a video she released last week. Have a look:

 

It's well crafted, well delivered and hits on so many progressive issues. While it might be a little long I was struck by how well done it is. So, why is she in the field? Good question. A political watcher suggested to me that she may be the "alternate labor candidate" to Sen. Nate Boulton (D-DSM) who has piled up a host of labor endorsements or that party officials couldn't have just one female running in former party chair Dr. Andy McGuire so Ms. Glasson was tapped. I dunno but it makes for good conversation.

Third District Congressional Action

And, on Friday, Cynthia Axne announced she is running to replace Rep. David Young (R-IA) in Congress. I confess I do not know Mrs. Axne although we run in the same marketing circles. She and her husband run a consulting and web design company in West Des Moines. This makes two women committed to the race. Axne joins Des Moines consumer rights attorney Anna Ryon who announced her candidacy in March and has been a regular at various Democratic meetings in the district. Yet to announce is my friend Pete D'Alessandro and my friend and fellow Windsor Heights Chamber member Theresa Greenfield a real estate executive. Getting crowded huh?

Fourth Congressional District

Meanwhile my friend Kim Weaver has decided to drop out of the race in the Fighting Fourth. She is a wonderful person but the issues about her work as a paid psychic proved to be too much. 

Des Moines School Board

One of the ways Republicans took control of Iowa was that the party worked overtime finding people to run for city council, boards and commissions including school boards. All of which are supposed to be non-partisan but...not so much if you intend to build a bench...which has been a major failure of the Iowa Democrats. But that...may be changing. Last month in the small town of Solon Lauren Whitehead, an activist in the Democratic Party and organizer for Invisible, won a special city council election. Here is that story from Iowa Starting Line. Last week Louisa Dykstra (speaking at right and center below) of Windsor Heights launched her bid for the Des Moines School Board. On hand for her announcement party were several dozen Democratic Party activists and elected officials including State Representative Ako Abdul-Samad (D-DSM) which sends a powerful signal to his constituents. Louisa has long been active pushing education agenda items and, judging by the way she has gone about announcing, she is in it to win it all as an At Large Candidate. Also at the event was current School Board Member Connie Boesen who just launched her campaign to unseat Des Moines City Council Member and fellow Democrat Skip Moore.

Wow...even on the local level folks are getting in and getting busy.

  

Partly Personal

I lost two friends last week both connected to my faith. I received a text from Alan Steckman the president of Adas Israel the Mason City Jewish Congregation that I have served for the past 29 years that Don Gilbert had died. Don was a life-long Methodist who was a regular attendee at our Shabbat services and loved to come to our Midrash (Torah Study) on Saturday mornings. Well read and kind he was a delightful addition to our small congregation.

Then, last week, after the holiday of Shavout I learned that my friend and wife of Rabbi Marshall Berg died in Chicago. From what I understand it was quite sudden. Rebbetzin Shirley Berg zt"l was a giant in religious education and kindness that radiated from her home and Beth El Jacob for 48 years. It is a crushing loss for all who knew and loved her. May we all be blessed by her memory. Finally, word is
that Rabbi Berg is in poor health. He should have a Refuah Shelayma...recovery.

Finally, my friend Desmund Adams is going through a rough time. His 21 year-old son is to have open heart surgery this week in Iowa City. Out of the blue Khalil developed heart failure and may be in line for a heart transplant. Desmund and his bride Shondalette have been through so much over the past month. If you are the sort who offers prayers and comfort...I'd invite you to do so.
